Senators Urge Obama Keystone XL Action

A bipartisan group of Senators is calling on President Barack Obama to meet with them in “the near future” to discuss moving forward with the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline.

In a letter, the 18 Senators implore the President to consider the thousands of jobs the pipeline project would create for Americans, as well as the impact on American energy security.

The Senators write:

Setting politics aside: Nothing has changed about the thousands of jobs that Keystone XL will create. Nothing has changed about the energy security to be gained through an important addition to the existing pipeline network built with sound environmental stewardship and the best modern technology. Nothing has changed about the security to be gained from using more fuel produced at home and by a close and stable ally. And nothing has changed about the need for America to remain a place where businesses can still build things

Discussing Obama’s directive last spring (which allowed Nebraska to move forward in some work on the pipeline), the Senators said the State route is near completion and the President should issue a permit to allow the rest of the project to move forward.

The state of Nebraska is nearing completion of the new pipeline route within Nebraska. With that process near completion, we look forward to an affirmative determination of national interest soon.

We then urge you to issue a Presidential Permit immediately afterward.

Signatories of the letter include Senators John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Max Baucus (D-Mont.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), David Vitter (R-La.) and Jim Webb (D-Va.).

    It’s amazing just how myopic, we can sometimes be! To those who declare that “most of this Oil will be exported” , I say DUH, of course it will! In part because, today, we don’t need it and because it will generate jobs and revenue for both the USA and Canada!
    Should I’matoilet Khamenei , through the efforts of his “talking head” I’madinnerjacket, suceed in further destablizing the Middle East, however, that Oil will be here, refined and used by us and our allys, reducing the impact of any efforts to cut us off from oil supplies!

    I am sure the senate will pass legislation to start the pipeline from canada. Are forgetting that this tyrant we have as a President would veto anything which will create 10′s of thousands of jobs, and the so called labor unions do not even demand that the pipeline be built. Anyone who is in a union should get the hell out now. The bosses like Trumpka do not give a dang about any of you. They are in it for the power and hate America as much as Obama does. If all the employees today working for unions would strike until the unions were out of the workplace, then all of us could win back our country. We the people need to rise up and demand our personal liberties back. Obama has made himself King and I for one see him no different that George the tyrant who we declared war on. That goes for Public unions also.

      I would guess your reading comprehension scores are really low. Read this Article II again, and pay special attention to:

      Section. 1.
      “The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.”
      An Executive enforces the laws (made by Congress).

      Section. 2
      “. . . he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, . . . ”
      The Commerce Department is one of the Executive Departments referred to. None of the Executive Departments are named in the Constitution, but have been ‘invented’ (by Presidents and Congresses) since Washington.

      “. . . He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; . . .”
      No such treaty has been approved. The State Department hasn’t been able to get a ‘responsible’ treaty between us and the Canadians, let alone get it approved in the Senate.

      Section 3.
      “. . . he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, . . .”
      There has been no law passed by Congress pertaining to the Keystone Pipeline to execute. There has been no Treaty approved by the Senate pertaining to the Keystone Pipeline that would even allow such laws to be written and executed. Note the President does not have to sign (approve) any treaty, even if approved by the Senate.

        I agree with you however the electorate has willingly put this tyrant inn charge for another 4 years if not more. Think of it. he has declared himself executor and legislator in chief. He circumvented the Congress on immigration. He will continue to use executive privilege he does not have and the congress and senate will do nothing. This president(tyrant) will do whatever he chooses. When he was re-elected we were all doomed. Not only that Justice Roberts was huge in sticking us with Obamacare by re legislating the bill.

    That we are even talking about these deposits as a valuable resource points to the fact that petroleum is a diminishing resource. All the easy oil deposits are about out and we will need to put more effort and risk into extracting the less available deposits.

    We are well overdue to embark on a SERIOUS transition to more sustainable (and less polluting) sources of energy along with MUCH higher efficiencies in our use of energy.

    Actually, the real issue is either it is going to be built Union or scab. There is in the works to make a federal PLA, or Project Labor Agreement. That would make the entire job – from project management all the way to the drivers of supply trucks would be union members.

    Yes the property is taken for little compensation the temporary workspace is useless for cultivating fur to the compacted soil from heavy equipment. Compensation varies among landowners the poor or average citizen is strong armed while the more affluent are coddled

        No one goes after corporations for making money but for greedy and selfish attitudes of their CEOs who make millions and then who blame the workers making $50,000 for all their ills. Kind of like the Twinkie defense where the company (Hostess) wanted to file for bankruptcy and fire 18,000 workers yet were still willing to pay $3 million dollar bonuses to their executives. Yes its those cold callous and calculating big boys at the top that are screwing America and screwing the Middle Class all in one shot.

    The pipeline will not be laid for two reasons. One is Obama is paying back Warren Buffet for supporting him and in return BNSF gets to inefficiently haul the oil by rail. Second and more sinister is anything that lowers the price of oil (Gasoline) or improves the lot of the middle class in the USA cannot be allowed. Suffer all you miserable bastards!

      John: Drilling is up and they even say the USA could be the number one oil and gas producer in the world within 4-8 years. That is without the Keystone Pipeline. That darn “sinister” Obama! LOL!!! Gas is $3.29 in Denver and I paid (with discount) $2.88.

The leases are not being given out by the government, then the government tells them they have not used the land so we are taking away your rights. sounds a lot like Atlas shrugged to me. If it wasn’t for wonderful states like montana and the dakotas, we would have squat for oil. Obama just wants to waste our tax money on failing green jobs. He takes over health care, banks, auto industry and you feel he is good for the middle class. he is destroying the middle class and you do not give a dam, even if it will affect you.     I have read in Australia that the USA has vast supplies of gas which when developed will not only make your country self sufficient but be able to earn income by selling to developing Asian nations. So it will save you spending money on fuel oil and earn you income too. So it is not all doom and gloom.

    It might be that the development of those gas supplies might become uncompetitive if the pipeline is permitted to be layed…but obviously there might be lots of other reasons the pipeline has been stalled and lobbyist usally are behind it…lol

      The infrastructure to export natural gas is minimal to non existent and it
      will be curious to see whether the “investment” required will be ventured…..
      since any such venture would require “government approval and the usual
      incentives”………..given that the public is aware of both the market effects on
      price and “mythology” of achieving actual “energy independence”……
      that this con should be almost impossible achieve should prevent any
      serious attempt to do so….this is a captured market…….and it needs to stay
      captured.

      This is also the proper strategy for the new sources of oil……..which are
      all landlocked…….and these too, need to remain captured……..you want to
      sell it……….build the refineries where the oil is………this is nasty stuff, and
      we need new refineries anyway……..

    Why won’t these politicians pass a law giving more protections to landowners and compensation from these foreign oil companies being allowed to take our land for profit. Outlaw eminent domain for foreign companies!

      Which is one of the main issues. Private properties all along the route of thousands of miles…taken with minimal compensation, lives destroyed, farms diminished…

      That and the protection of the aquifers. Yeah yeah I know…there will be no leaks endangering the main aquifer that waters our breadbasket region….tell that to the Gulf residents dealing with the BP oil spill aftermath.

      And notice…the oil companies refuse to sign anything stating the oil will be kept for domestic use. Refineries and ports handy in the Gulf…the pipeline costing gadzillions..and they won’t upgrade refineries in the north.

      Think about that.

        And why would a company limit itself to the domestic market? Demand for gasoline in the U.S. is not exactly robust. Decreased demand means less work which could result in layoffs. Why would oil comapnies upgrade refineries when demand is down and regulation has increased?

        I hate to disillusion you Mr. Flashy. The land is not “taken”. The pipeline company quickly digs a trench about eight feet deep, welds iron pipe together, inspects it, places it in the ground and covers it up. The landowner is compensated for any loss incurred, and paid for using his ground for the pipeline. Also replaced is the original flora. All at the expense of the pipeline company. You, driving by or over the property, would never know a pipeline was there. Additionally, there are 16 pipelines crossing the disputed territory right now. Opposition to this pipeline is orchestrated by Communist ideologues whose real intent is to destroy the USA productive capacity and re-direct this oil to China, which is what is happening now, and will continue to happen if the pipeline is not built.

        And the aquifer feeding and irrigating the US breadbasket region? Not real important eh? When you talk of existing pipelines criss crossing that region…pray tell, are they of the same capacity as Keystone? Ooops.

        And why should the pipeline be built instead of expanding existing refineries sited across the border?

        Look…Canada wants to ship it elsewhere? have ‘em build the pipeline to Vancouver. Ever wondr why they don’t want to build it across Canadian lands?

        I bet the pipeline will be built although I see the dangers in doing so. Considering that some oil companies can drill safely and some are reckless this will be a mixed bag. I agree with Flashy that the refineries should be built up north (North Dakota). Oklahoma is centralized but has increased earthquakes and Texas has shutdowns because of hurricanes. Since Texas wants to secede from the Union then why give them more revenue. Then again if they become a separate country we could charge them a huge import tax! Don’t you all want to “get tough” on China then we could apply the same principle to the country of Texas.

        Gee, flahsman, you got me—not. Oil is the most traded commodity in the world, so why would a company limit itself to domestic demand if the demand isn’t there. No domestic demand, no domestic jobs, foreign demand, domestic jobs. How hard is it to figure out…Jeesh!!!

    Sorry, I am a centrist libertarian, but peoples’ lives are at stake here. The oil sands are the most toxic, filthy way to extract oil known to man. They were ignored until recently as being too inefficient and expensive, until the price of oil rose to meet its inefficiency and filth.
    Do some research. So-called ‘energy security’ is not served well by this filthy and toxic ‘technology’. It is simply not worth it. Do you want the blood of innocent people on your hands just so you can still drive your car? If you answer yes, you are less than human in my humble opinion, sorry.

        Please, using only facts, no speculation, explain how President Obama has “blood on his hands” from the Benghazi attack. Save the BS about the fictitious “stand down” order or any claims that requests for backup were ignored. Don’t forget that this was actually a CIA front staffed with 3 times as many CIA operatives than State Department employees. Also, before you bring up the lack of military support, remember that Congress turned down the administrations request for funding to provide such support.

    It’s time for Congress to put on their big boy pants and start doing their job. They need to write a bill authorizing the building of the pipeline, restraining the EPA from holding it back and start representing the American people. Put forth a bill and make the president either sign it or explain to the nation why it is unacceptable. Congress is the legislative branch, commerce is their responsibility.

    Energy security??? There is NO guarentee that we will consume the oil products from this pipeline. MOST likely, This oil will be sold to other countries like China. The Senators who signed this letter to our President are likely in the back pocket of the oil industry and stand to gain personally from influencing our President.

    President Obama did not approve continuing the pipeline at that time because the environmental concerns of the local people who would be most affected by spills and other environmental affects were not adequately addressed. If those issues are mitigated he implied that he would approve the rest of the pipeline. Have those issues been mitigated???

        Spot ON!!! The ban to drill in the gulf is (not only rediculous, but…) money to Warren Buffet (a key financial contributor to Obama the past 2 elections). Why? First there are over 14 foreign countries still drilling in the gulf (and we are not – I guess we’re so stupid we can’t figure out a SAFE WAY to drill, and these other, more sophisticated countries obviously CAN!) HA! Secondly, money,… Buffet… He owns the railroad rights to move oil from Alaska to the states…. Pretty plain and simple if you ask me…

        That idea about going back to horses is really a pretty good idea in some respects Rendarsmith.
        We could put all those welfare queens to work picking up road apples, this would get them off their fat butts, out into the fresh air, which would help them lose the weight they gain from eating food stamp junk food in front of the idiot box. Then, by not watching so much tv and having time to think, the programming the MSM conditions into them would have less of an effect. The work they would be doing would also help to build self respect into them and some might even expend some of their newfound energy to start a small business and maybe even employ some other poop scooping welfare queens.
        The next thing you know these ex-welfare queens with their newfound selfrespect and work ethic would start to outnumber the voter fraud majority who got Obamachination re-voterfraud-elected, because all of a sudden they would be objecting to all their ‘hard-earned’ money being given to someone else.
        And to appease all those tree-huggin’-greenies, look at all the natural fertilizers that would be available for growing non-agribusiness healthy food crops, locally.
        And then there is the resurgence in the American manufactoring sector, that was decimated by ‘free-trade’, that could be revived by manufacturing MADE IN AMERICA wheel barrows, shovels and brooms. The posibilities are endless.

      Doc, Canadian Petroleum has already said they will use the pipeline to gain access to the Gulf, so they can ship it oversea’s !
      Reandarsmith We do have a example of a tar sands spill ! Almost 3 years ago in Michigan CPs pipeline ruptured pouring thousands of barrels of oil sands into the Kalimazoo river ! Come to find out, they didn’t have the tech to clean oil sands in water ! Crude floats tar sands sink ! So for the last almost 3 years they have been developing tech to clean up in water in our river ! The spill still isn’t cleaned up, parts of it never will be, as it has drifted down river !

      If we do build the proposed pipe line, and did have a spill it could possibly reach the Aquafir that water’s the great plains, our breadbasket ! If it does happen there’s no going back for a do over !

      I for 1 would rather protect our food supply for our kids, than worry about some oil that we have other option’s to fill ! Or some jobs that will last 1 to 2 years !

        The Chinese are demanding more and more oil every day, driving up the price of crude. This pipeline will bring oil to Texas refineries in the gulf region, ready for shipping overseas. So how does President Obama’s refusal benefit the Chinese?

      China? Because of Obama Canada is building a pipeline to the pacific Ocean so oil can be sold to China instead of the US. Besides, if oil is sold to some other country, it’s still income to the US. And there could be provisions that in case of emergency, some or all of it has to go to the US. Even without such provisions, some emergencies would result in increased prices in the US, which would insure that some or all of it would go to the US.

      Actually Doc, Soetoro will eventually allow the pipe line as soon as the companies pony up the under-the-table $ to him. This will most likely occur in the next 18 – 24 months. It is not about energy independance. It is about self-enrichment for the communist foreign national Kenyan and his cronies, but mostly for the Kenayn.
