A Camp Stove And A Generator

Whether you’re a prepper or an outdoor enthusiast who likes to get away from the modern world for days at a time, you know that there are still a pesky few electronic devices that you would like to keep charged even when a power source is miles away.

There are several options like solar panels and hand cranks for providing off-grid power; but often — for preppers and backpackers alike — space is a major concern when already packing a heft of gear.

A new camp stove design by a company called BioLite, however, can help you keep your pack light and still let you charge your cellphones and other small electronics by converting the cooking heat to electricity.

The $130 unit uses a small fan to keep a wood fire going in the compact 8.25-by-5-inch wide camp stove. The stove then steals energy away from the burning wood and converts it to power compatible with a USB plug with the help of a tiny thermoelectric generator. Though some reviews of the product complain that the small size of the stove requires constant addition of biomass to fuel the fire, the company claims the powerful unit can boil a pot of water in just less than five minutes.

    cool stove and small gen. but keep it simple.get small portable solar charger for the Iphone
    i use a AC box frame the top makes great grill marks.it holds a frying pan well also 2qt soup pot.,and coffee perk type.small fire pit below. plus use solar power flood lights with a off and On switch 8hrs,use.in side.aim at ceiling. recharge next day. get a few yrs service most. and not worry about a battery.

    My guess is maybe a watt or two, at best. I’ve been experimenting with thermoelectric power generation for ten years now, so this surely caught my eye. I’m currently working on a project to power my amateur radio gear. But I’ve had great difficulty getting any significant amount of power from anything intended as portable. And don’t forget; the fan used in this gadget uses some of the power generated. Don’t expect a speedy charge for your iPhone. I will likely get one to see for myself.

    Sounds a lot like those DIY gassifier stoves you can see on YouTube or the well made, light weight Sierra Zip stove I purchased 10 years ago. When backpacking I can cook 3 meals a day for a week or more on nothing but a single AA battery and a handful of wood pellets or found wood or pine cones. It’s a faster boiler than my gas stoves and works at any altitude. Not sure how the thermo-electric generator ties into all this.       Along time ago I learned that putting liquid soap on the outside of the pots and pans would make clean up easy. Just wash off the outside and presto-cleano.

    At one time years ago I read about home central heating units that used this technoligy to keep the fan in a central heating unit running during a power outage. Since you never see it promoted (at least where I live) one would assume it did not work out. It would be interesting to know why.

    I have been around for 78 years now. Want my impression…………High tech usually fails when you need it the most. Stick with the old fashioned basics.

    We just had a mega storm on the East Coast and we had a generator back up.One never knows when you will need these types of equipment and it is advisable no matter where you live to have these on hand.Our greatest ally in this disaster was the President and he earned the vote of anyone who ever had to live through any type of catastrophe.The work by FEMA this time around was superb after the complete overhaul they have gone through in the last four years.America is just so much greater today with the like of President Obama in charge with his expertise and love for this country.Romney is just in love with his money and himself.

      FEMA did not prepare for anything. Bottled water may not be delivered until today. No generators. NO preplanning for food, fuel,shelter and search and rescue. O is still a zero.

        It is so apparent you don’t live on the East Coast as I do.We have seen first hand how well our President handled this disaster along with the new FEMA.There is no no doubt in my mind or that of any other that have been through this tragedy that Obama is the only good choice for America.Remember when the GOP was in control during Katrina.Romney is the poster child for that disaster.His current staff is about 80% from the Bush team.That is a lot of clowns.

        The anointed one has done SO good for the victims of Sandy. I DO live on the east coast.
        Why are there generators sitting idle? Why did it almost take a war for the marathon to be cancelled
        How about the people in Red Hook? They are as bad off… almost as Staten Island.
        Yea During Katrina the GOP was in control, but it was the Liberals that were in charge of LA and New Orleans and the REFUSED help from the Federal Government until it was already too late.
        One good thing about Obama…… you can tell when he’s lying or covering something up….. it’s easy…… see if his mouth is open.

      Gee whiz jopa what news sources are you reading?? FEMA ran out of bottled water before the first day was out. They had plenty of time to get up to speed on this and other essentials but ran out the first day. So on the scale of katrina and other natural disasters up to sandy, this organization has still failed miserably. As a matter of fact FEMA has ask private contractors to help with the essentials that they themselves have failed to provide.

        When it comes to the marathon you will have to talk to Bloomberg and as for certain districts where people are still suffering they should try and contact their local officials.During Katrina when the people of New Orleans needed water there were several truckloads of water sitting in Allentown Pa with no orders for delivery.I know a lot of these people are city folks with no survival skills sitting out in the cold but sometimes a person has to wise up a little and get a little kick in the ass.When they get cold enough they will hopefully smarten up a little and quit waiting for a total handout and someone to come and wipe their butt.This was one of the biggest storms in history and it takes time to recover and if everyone waits for someone else to do everything for them it ain’t gonna work very well.The authorities in this matter from the President on down were excellant in their response to this catastrophe.
