Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is looking for potential future additions to the United States’ massive security/surveillance apparatus; her agency has begun to target kindergarten-aged children with cybersecurity training.

In a recent blog post on the Department of Homeland Security website, Napolitano writes of the importance of recognizing the next generation of government cybersecurity experts:

At DHS, we’re working to develop the next generation of leaders in cybersecurity while fostering an environment for talented staff to grow in this field.  We are building strong cybersecurity career paths within the Department, and in partnership with other government agencies.  We are also creating training and development opportunities to retain our most talented employees and ensure their professional development.  In collaboration with the National Security Agency, we are strengthening the nation’s educational infrastructure by supporting Centers of Academic Excellence across the country.

In addition, we are extending the scope of cyber education beyond the federal workplace through the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, involving students from kindergarten through post-graduate school. And we sponsor the U.S. Cyber Challenge, a program that works with academia and the private sector to identify and develop the best and brightest cyber talent to meet our nation’s growing and changing security needs.

The DHS has been working desperately in recent years to identify young cybersecurity talent to work in what officials say will play a key role in keeping Americans safe.

    Sounds very communistic – like the Soviets taking children away from their parents so the ‘state’ could train them to be Olympic athletes or ‘other’ occupations. This from the woman that says “our borders are secure- we don’t need any help from Congress” last week when Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.) told Congress “the mounting evidence of a Hezbollah presence in Mexico is being ignored by the Department of Homeland Security.”

    The nature of mankind is such that given reign over malleable minds, mankind will take those minds down the paths of unbelievable ends. Without constraints, man will always seek his lowest level regarding values and morals. Greed for power and wealth, in that order, runs through the hearts and minds of man to such an extent that shaping, using, and directing children to enrich the agenda, is simply another step toward fulfilling the lusts. The goal? Full and complete ownership of all power and all wealth.

    They are wanting our kids at a younger age also, kindergarten beginning at age 3.

      Bill Clinton wanted them at age 2. Most kids learn all their basic values by age 5. Clinton wanted to get them earlier so the government could teach them many of their basic values. Of course, one of their basic “values” was to turn in their parents if they were taught something else than what the govenrment wanted.

    Hitler had his Brown Shirts Youth Movement. He may have been the only one openly honest about it’s purpose! He explained the method as a designed 8 year indoctrination program, (could take up to 18 for those more stubbornly independent young people).It’s purpose, in his own words was to remove “….any class consciousness or pride of status…..so that they shall in no case suffer a relapse, and they shall never be free again as long as they live” !
    Mao had his Red Guards. After Mao encouraged and supported their rebellion against the Educational establishment , they assumed control of it!
    Pol Pot had his Communist Youth League. After killing all the politicians and most of the Educators and Doctors, these young people were given authority over nearly every hamlet and village!

      Is a child being educated for the future or brainwashed. Huge difference and it depends on how a program is presented. Mao certainly used it to turn citizens against each other and was useful for his regime but counterproductive to China’s future. Although the Chinese government still has control in what gets distributed on the Internet and some phone calls they are slightly better off than in Mao’s days. Oddly one of the sources of cyber hacking in the USA comes from China. Maybe a little cyber security training wouldn’t be so bad to keep other countries from picking us apart.

    Anyone here see history attempting to repeat itself? Funny thing is, the older we get, we just keep seeing the same behaviors surface over and over and over. I wonder, what’s the prize for “winning this challange”?

        CLinton wanted to teach all the kids “honesty” – starting with kindergarten. It was part of his “Goals 2000″ program.

        The idea was that the teacher would start teaching the kids what the government wanted them to know – and then have the kids report the parents for doing something different. For instance, if the kid saw the parent was speeding, he would tell his teacher the next day. The parents would then get tickets or jail time to “prove” to the kids that honesty was best. For some reason, it also would give the kids the idea that turning in anyone who disagreed with the government was a good thing, even if it was a parent or sibling.

    Leave the children alone to live thier lives the way they choose. My concern it could be just as bad for our country as it could be good. So there leave well enought alone.

    This makes perfect sense! Most kindergarteners can’t even READ yet! Let’s teach them cybersecurity! Gotta love those feminist trolls and their “brilliant” minds!

      Don’t Christian schools fully indoctrinate their students in doing things their way? Where free thinking is questioned if it is outside the Christian doctrine. I am not against private schools especially Christian schools but lets be fair Kurt in your poor analogy!

    Well, with people already giving their two and three year olds computers of various types to play with, why not let kindergarten kids start studying how to hack and prevent hacking. Seems that is primarily what cybersecurity is all about anyway. Truthfully, for most of us adults, a ten year old kid can run rings around us on the internet, and make it look easy. If you can start teaching a kid how to use a gun at five or six, why not a computer?
