D.C. Considers Ban On Sugary Drinks

Move over, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, there’s a new soda sheriff. Several members of the D.C. Council want to see large sugary drinks banned.
Councilmembers Michael Brown, Vincent Orange and Mary Cheh hope to make large drinks a thing of the past.
“I’m very excited by that,” said Cheh, in regard to a ban on large drinks. “If I could get the votes to do it I would certainly try to put that in place. I would consider legislation to do that, I would like to see that done.”
Several others are open to the idea, including Mayor Vincent Gray, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Councilmember Tommy Wells.
“I think there probably are some good health reasons to support something like that,” said Gray. “We’ll be happy to look at it, we haven’t taken a position on that one way or another.”
Mendelson said: “The issue of nutrition is of critical importance to public health. We need to look at different strategies so people understand what the effect is of the large volume of soft drinks they’re drinking.”
Wells had this to say: “I am open to anything that will help young people be healthier.”
