Democrats Get To Talk More In Each Debate

October 19, 2012 by

Democrats Get To Talk More In Each Debate
UPI

Without a doubt, Democrats have come out ahead in one area of the debates: time spent talking. In each of the three debates so far, the man with the blue tie has talked the most.

In the first debate, President Barack Obama spoke for three minutes and 14 seconds more than Mitt Romney, according to the CNN debate clock. In the Vice Presidential debate, Joe Biden spoke for one minute and 22 seconds more than Ryan. (That is the time of actual words being spoken. If you accounted for all of his giggles, it would be much more.) At Tuesday’s town hall debate, Obama spoke for four minutes and 18 seconds longer than Romney.

Despite the fact that Democrats have had more time to talk, Republicans have had the edge. The Nation was in agreement that Romney trounced Obama during the first debate. The Vice Presidential debate was virtually a draw, but a CNN poll gave Paul Ryan the win. The media have not announced a clear winner of Tuesday’s debate. Republicans feel like Romney won, while Democrats believe Obama left with a victory. CNN’s poll gives the latest victory to Obama.

Yet, we don’t even get to hear from the candidate who will actually IMPROVE this country instead of contributing to it’s downfall:

Well, I don’t see a Jimmy, but you’re right about Rosanne. Not too surprising I suppose when it’s not the first time a Hollywood celebrity ran for office.

There are a lot of them, so why not hold elimination debates? Or draw a requirment line of being on half the state ballots? (Rosanne being on the ballot in only one state isn’t very compelling)

Where would you draw the line Ted? How’s the duopoly working out for you?

  • tony

“In each of the three debates so far, the man with the blue tie has talked the most.”
I’m not disputing any findings here, but did anyone else note that Romney is wearing the “blue tie” in this photo?

    • chuckb

come on kenetic1, you know the bolsheviks need more time for their lies, it takes less time for the truth.

  • godhelpus

Of course CNN gave the win to Obama. The media has been one sided since he got into office. Always spinning the story to make him look good. They also love to publicize the racial tension when it is white on black, but don’t give the same consideration when it’s black on white

    • eddie47d

Almost all outlets and newspapers gave the win to Obama Ms Godhelpus not just CNN so you once again seem to be the one stirring up trouble instead of bringing up facts. This article said that Obama spoke for 18 seconds more than Romney. Big Whop Te Doo! Considering that Romney used 7,802 words and Obama used 7,294 words in the first debate and Romney used 7,984 words and Obama used 7,506 words in the second debate says alot about who really got to say the most. Yet you will never get the complete truth around here.

      • Mikey

I know reading is not your strong point eddiot, but try again. Four minutes and 18 seconds more is what the article said.

      • eddie47d

Straight for the name calling Mikey. I will give you the 4 minutes if you agree that Romney said more in the allotted time. Apparently Romney is a faster talker or did less walking around in his time given.

  • tony

OK then if they want to talk more then lets here them explain This foreign policy ?? Romney needs to ask Obama if he plans on adopting the UNITED NATIONS Sustainable development plans as laid out here and what this will do to the Economy ??? http://oneway2day.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/wildlands-map-2010_merrit.jpg

    • julesv29

That question may very well have been one that the townhall audience asked. However, the questions were given to the moderator (Candy Crowley) a day or so ahead of the event and SHE chose which questions could be read. She chose those that would be favorable or that she could make favorable to the incumbent.

  • http://yahoo Larry

I wonder where the moderator got her copy of the speech in the rose garden and why she just happened to have it with her during the debate. The president even told her to check it to see what he had said during that speech. No wonder this boob is down 7 points in the poll.

  • Patriot

What I have learned throughout my business and life experiences, generally the person who does most of the talking is hiding or concealing something!

  • Ted Crawford

Time should always be only a secondary issue. It’s what you have to say and how you choose to say it that matters. Nearly everyone remembers, parts at least, of Lincolns Gettesburg Address, only minutes long. No one , few at least, even remember the name of the Speaker who proceeded him, and that speech was over an hour long!
How about “Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down this wall” or ” Ask not what your Country can do for you…” or ” speak softly and carry a big stick”.

    • TML

“If the present Congress [or President] errs in too much talking, how can it be otherwise in a body to which the people send one hundred and fifty lawyers, whose trade it is to question everything, yield nothing, and talk by the hour?” – Thomas Jefferson

“Less is more” only applies to words, not choices.

  • http://Yahoo.com Bill

Why talk about who got more time. In the presidential debates Obama is up 6 or 7 minutes. I don’t really care – when you don’t have anything worth saying, it doesn’t really matter how long you say it for.

  • TML

When another Presidential candidate is being arrested outside, and several other candidates aren’t allowed to speak at all. Is this really news?

I can remember that same thing done to Ron Paul in the Republican primaries. Whine it up hypocrites. lol

    • Ted Crawford

Right on TML! Why didn’t we hear from Jimmy McMillen and Roseanne Barr and those other Radicals?

      • TML

Because they’re not Presidential candidates who are on the ballots, genius. The real question is why didn’t we hear from those who are. how do you/we know they are radicals if they are not allowed to participate? Don’t be such a sheep with your ‘complex questions’.

      • Ted Crawford

OH but they are TML ! Jimmy represents the ” The Rents Too Damn High Party and Roseanne represents the “Peace and Freedom Party!

      • TML

        http://www.politics1.com/p2012.htm

Well, I don’t see a Jimmy McMillan – not so sure how much stock I put in a report of him saying he will run – but you’re right. There are a lot. (Didn’t know Rosanne was running, lol)

But regardless, why not let them participate in elimination debates? Especially those on more than half the state ballots? (which Rosanne is not – but wouldn’t be the first time ‘celebrity’ ran for office)

Where would you draw the line Ted? The duopoly lock out working good for you?

  • Liberty Lover

In a visually driven world where style routinely trumps substance, both the first presidential debate and the only VP debate were huge wins for the GOP and are likely to determine the outcome of this election. Those who give Biden a win on content completely miss the fact that his atrocious behavior was turning off women by the millions. Democrats don’t believe in playing by the rules, whether it’s Michelle clapping at the last debate, Reid ignoring his responsibility to pass a budget, or Obama violating any law he doesn’t like.

  • James Corbin

Romney tried to talk, he was stopped. I thought the president of the United States should have more manners. He and Biden showe4d how rude they were.

    • Doc Sarvis

I am sure President Obama would let Romney talk all night about his binders of women.

      • momo

Maybe Obama could tell us what really happened in Libya, but that wouldn’t be “optimal”.

  • Dave67

Boy conservatives have all kinds of excuses when they lose… Couldn’t be that Romney is a serial liar and political bully and opportunist? No… of course not… What am I thinking? You can cut taxes 20% across the board, raise spending and balance the budget and reduce the debt… Worked so well for Ronnie Reagan and George W Bush…

Conservative will but into any BS and lie Romney throws out there because they hate Obama that much.

    • bobbyp

Seems to me you harbor a lot of hate for Romney/Ryan & the Republicans, that’s known as the pot calling the kettle black.

    • Ted Crawford

I’m aware of no Conservative “losses”, unless you are willing to give Obama the slight edge provided by Crowleys false assertion that he was correct, when he wasn’t !
As to “Hating Obama”, any right thinking, freedom loving individule, anywhere, should hate what he stands for ! I wish him no harm, I just wish him gone!

    • vicki

      Dave67 says:
“Boy conservatives have all kinds of excuses when they lose…”

Presupposes the (unproven) assertion that conservatives=Republicans.

Conservatives lost months ago when Romney was selected to be the Republican candidate thus your comment is not relevant to the OP.

  • http://n.a. mort_f

These were not debates, they were media events. The ‘equal time’ factor is rather meaningless, in Lincoln-Douglas, Douglas spoke for hours on end, Lincoln was able to succeed with but a few well chosen words. And at Gettysburg, he was castigated by the media for his ‘far too brief’ Gettysburgh Address, which has since become a classic in American history. In a military battle, thousands of shots are fired, but it takes only one well aimed bullet to kill.

At each and every utterance of Obama, Romney had ample opportunity to say ‘B…..S…’. That he didn’t, nor resort to the Biden approach, amply demonstrated the inherent class of Romney, something sorely lacking from his opponents which included the so-called moderator. A moderator who had to apologize the following day for her own words and ineptness. An apology that is buried in the backpages of the media.

  • James Corbin

I don’t think they should have a democrat moderator all the time.

  • JohnC

Without a doubt you can see that the Liberal Moderators favor their man and agenda, But they loose everytime it gets down to Obama’s record

    • Virginia

I am so upset with the debates! Biden was so rude by interrupting Ryan, it made my blood boil. Obama is no better and I don’t understand how he ever became president!!! What’s happening in our country, don’t people care anymore?

  • Richard Hull

Seems unfair to me. I watched all the Republican debates when we started out wth a zillion candidates and I have watched the two Presidential and one Vice-Presidentail debate. WHY are the moderators ALWAYS from the left side. Either from CNN, ABC, MSNBC, etc. Have the debates ever heard of Brit Hume? Although a Conservative, he would undoutedly be the most unbiased moderstor of all. Of course, in America today that would be a no-no to have a right leaning moderator. In the last Presidential debate Romney had ole BHO on the ropes till Candy Crowley from CNN (that great liberal network) came to the Presidents rescue. AND, she was wrong and later admitted so.

    • carla

In true fairness in order to avoid similar situations there should be 2 moderators:; one representing the Democratic Party and one for the Republican Party.

      • Paul Wells

Interesting idea…but I’m afraid that would descend into a cluster [insert your favorite noun here]. I just think they really need to try harder to find someone who hasn’t already aligned with one camp or the other.

      • carla

It is hard to find a neutral person as the majority of individuals lean either on the right or on the left

  • TexRay

    - “man with the blue tie has talked the most.”
I wish Mr. Nash would have noticed that Mr. Romney sits in the background with a blue tie while the president’s is red. Just an observation.
I have watched all three and find it frustrating that moderators aren’t held more accountable when revealing their bias, but there is hope. As soon as a conservative moderator shows any sign of bias, there will be a reckoning.

    • Bob Robbins

Pray tell me when we are going to get a conservative commentator????????????????????//

  • http://orples.wordpress.com orples

I would watch the debates if they threw a Libertarian into the mix who would stir up the issues that need to be addressed. I’d like to hear our Candidates discuss their plans for the North American Union, the audit of the Federal Reserve, and other ‘taboo’ subjects that I’m sure they wish we were all unaware of.

With only Obama and Romney to argue (and sling mud) back and forth, the debates aren’t worth my time. They should let all of the Presidential Contenders speak. Of course, we’re supposed to believe that we only have two Candidates to choose from. That in itself is a lie.

Last time around (in the 2008 elections), Obama told lie after lie to get elected … like say for instance, where is the transparency we were promised? And that is just one example. I’m sure if Romney gets elected, he too, will fall short of his election promises. I’m so sick of the puppets that parade around on stage, chomping at the bit, in their attempts to get the key to the White House.

We need a President that will put America (American’s) first and restore our Constitution. I don’t see either Obama, or Romney doing that. Their CFR affiliation says it all. Anyone unfamiliar with the Council on Foreign Relations and/or their goals should do a little research and while you’re at it, google Agenda 21. That is where is we are headed under both Romney and/or Obama. They are two sides of the same coin.

    • http://yahoo gator

no doubt! hopefully after this two-party bs is over and its seen by the AMERICAN people that neither rep/dem party acts in their interests, maybe then we will have a true AMERICAN PATRIOT PRESIDENT, for which to vote.
to hell with the cfr, un, federal reserve, and the biggest thug on the block, the military industrial machine.
BRING ALL THE TROOPS HOME NOW! DEFEND OUR BORDERS! AMERICA FIRST!

    • Mikey

      Gary Johnson…..need I say more?

      • http://www.facebook.com/pat.yates.568 Pat Yates

All Gary Johnson will do is cause problems. With him throwing his hat in the ring, it will make it more difficult for Romney to win and what are you going to do if we get another four years of this garbage that we have had???? I live in NM but I do not agree with anyone trying to upset the whole applecart in this manner. Johnson cannot win, he can
only try and assure us of another 4 years with BO, our affirmative action, illegal alien so-called potus who, it has been said, has been a card carrying communist. And who could doubt that considering all his pals and buddies who still carry that card.

      • vicki

        Pat Yates says:
“…… what are you going to do if we get another four years of this garbage that we have had???? ”

When Romney wins and you get another 4 years of this garbage are you going to finally admit that voting for the lessor of 2 evils is still a vote fore evil?

Gary Johnson CAN win. If everyone voted on principle instead of popularity he would win in a landslide. Unless, of course the school propaganda machine has successfully destroyed the people’s interest in freedom, liberty and (true) justice for all.

Btw the path for 3rd party candidates will be social media. Much less expensive to run campaigns thru that path.

    • Jeff

      Orples,

I agree. When are we going to hold these buffoons accountable for all the monies they waste. I still don’t think they have accounted for or even know were the bail out money went. According to the Constitution they have to account for it. But I’ll be more than willing to beat they don’t want us to know.

  • Dussty1

As long as the Republicans keep agreeing to sitting with liberal moderators, the Dems will always have more time to speak, and get assistance from the moderator if they screw-up a talking point.

    • Paul Wells

I believe the overall point may be, that it’s damned tough in today’s media to even FIND an unbiased middle of the road mediator, they seemed to have been hijacked by the Saul Alinsky crowd!

  • Gary L

    Is anyone surprised? Anyone?

    • http://twitter.com/LaurelShand56 Laurel Shand (@LaurelShand56)

No Gary L, not at all. If Obama thugs can’t cheat then they know they can’t win.

      • Paul Wells

Chicago style, Saul Alinsky brass knuckles politics at it’s best! When the facts don’t work…lie, lie, and lie!

  • http://theconservativecrawfish.wordpress.com reelman1946

I watched every second of all debates…its simply that the arrogant apostles of utopian secular socialism have great difficulty defending the naturally toxic results socialistic policies produce. Lofty visionary fantasy speeches cannot trump real results!

All over the globe for generations the monster gov-meant/hi debt theory has brought personal pain to hundreds of millions BUT the dimdems here never ever ever learn.

Their pawn media will not blame the socialism but the head socializer…
and go look for yet another apostle to impose this on us. Socialism does not work, does not work and certainly does not fit America.

    • Warrior

Thats exactly how “empty suits” perform. The “first lie” may be hard, but after that balloon is punctured, the gas bag just lets loose.

  • Harold Olsen

Though I never watch the debates, which I consider to be a waste of time, from what I hear, the Democrats are constantly violating the rules and interrupting Republicans when it’s their turn to speak. The moderator,, liberal Democrats in all the debates this time around, are supposed to stop these interruptions, but rather than doing their jobs, they allow the Democrats to interrupt the Republicans and even interrupt the Republicans themselves. When people interrupt others, what that says to me is their argument is weak and they are afraid of their opponent putting forth his views.

    • Kinetic1

      Harold,
Nope, you haven’t watched the debates and it’s rather foolish to comment on the event based only on what you have heard. There was plenty of back and forth between the candidates Tuesday night and plenty of criticism to go around.

      • Alan

Kinetic1 – the truth is that the moderator did interrupt Romney more then Obama, Obama had more speaking time and the moderator stopped moderating and became a fact checker and was in fact wrong in her fact checking – the debate was not properly moderated by an unbiased person. And I have watched all three debates as well as several state debates for my state candidates.

      • Paul Wells

Alan, I’ve watched all three also, and I echo what you said…verbatim. That’s the plain simple truth of it. Democrats just don’t want to play by the rules. Also, of note: Obummer whining at one point about whether or not he was going to have enough time to rebut. Hell, they took away most of Romney’s time to rebut. Fair and balanced, it was NOT!

      • CalBob

I agree with the first two replies…..and when Romney even mentioned ‘Fast and Furious”, wow, Crowley shut him down in a heartbeat….

      • Disgusted

I’ve watched all 3 ” debates.” I even dvr’d the last one so I could replay it. The moderator interrupted Mr. Obama 9 times, but Mr. Romney 28 times. At one point, the topic was gun control. Mr. Romney was trying to make a point concerning ” Operation Fast and Furious.” The moderator interrupted him, saying that had nothing to do with guns or gun control. If anyone ” beat ” Mr. Romney in the second debate, it would have been the liberal Democratic moderator ( from CNN.)

      • Jimbo

Well, I’ve watched the debates (as much as I can stomach), and the moderators HAVE been hostile to Romney and Ryan, and deferential to Obama and Biden. They must know they have a weak argument.

    • Ted Crawford

While the last Presidential Debate was marred by the Moderators’(?) Partisan interruptions and even confirming(falsely) her chosen candidates position, the first Presidential Debate was moderated very well I thought. Jim Lehrer inserted himself rarely and allowed the free flow of debate between the Candidates!

      • Disgusted

I agree. And that’s why all his liberal colleagues blasted him… he did his job correctly.

    • julesv29

Harold – Even though you say you did not watch the debate, you pegged it dead on. I watched and you are absolutely correct. Not only do the moderators interrupt, but they side with Obama or Biden to assist them in their lies against Romney and Ryan. It was a joke to see how unfairly the debates were handled. Afterword, fact checking supported the claims of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and showed the lies from the Left. But, still, the Left gets support, although it is getting weaker. More people are starting to see where we are headed and what a liar we have in the WH.

    • Mac

I have a proposal for the moderators. It’s actually quite simple. Since the “Clock” that they use is electronic, and so are the Microphones. Tie the clock to the the Mics. End of time >CLICKCLICKCLICK<.
