In high school (class of 73) I was 5’11″ & 180 lbs, with an athletic build. I wrestled and my wrestling coaches were also the football coaches. You can believe they tried to persuade me to play football. However I felt FB was too dangerous so I refused. It seems to me the proper approach is like that: education and choice, not banning or censorship. The situation today reminds me of “Harrison Bergeron”.

Ideally, I would like to see it out of the schools. Not eliminated, however decoupled from education. This applies to all sports. If the sport matters to the child, or his/her parents, they will find a way to continue playing. For me, it was bicycle racing, on my own dime, my own time, all the while working and going to school. I did not detract from the school for my past time, nor did I detract from my sport because I was on the lower runs economically. I believe the same can be said of any sport (or other ‘extracurricular’ activity

Why does a professional football player make more money than a collage graduate?

Ban football and they will find something else to do that will be just as dangerous or more so. (i.e. soccer, hitting the ball with the head)

Walking down the streets where I live is a risk of injury, this idot on the school board needs to get his head out of where the sun don’t shine. I was 4’10″ in high school and played varseity football and basketball and never had a fear. Went to the Marine Corps where you can really get hurt bad and after boot camp was 5’7″ and played Division Football with the really big guys, also Division Basketball so size doesn’t matter, the heart does. I played sports until age 62 and yes, I got injured once, my old knee gave out or I would still be playing, leave the kids alone, better then on the streets making trouble and going to jail, if it wasn’t for sports might have been where I ended up?

As an athletic trainer, I work directly with the kids, especially those who get injured. All sports involve risk of injury. The problem isn’t with the sport, but rather with school adiministrators that refuse to understand, coaches that refuse to understand, and parents that refuse to understand. By refusing to understand, I mean sports medicine advocates have talked to these groups until “blue in the face” about injuries, how to prevent them, and how to manage them, yet they still refuse to do what’s needed. School administrators, or the leadership of club sports refuse to spend the money to have adequate care available. Some coaches don’t listen, and if they do, think they know more and do what they want anyway. Some parents push their kids, or allow their kids to push themselves beyond reasonable limits. Some parents don’t listen to advice from medical professionals and an injury gets mis-managed causing risk of further and more serious injury.

Football is a game played with risk, soccer, rugby and other contact sports are played world wide, the risk and rewards all all understood by the players and fans, getting injury in pursuit of the goal is not unusual but there are always the nay sayers…
There is always a group advocating no risk, no physical risk, no finanacial risk, no confrontional risk is aceptable to these kind of folks and sitting on their hands is acceptable as long as someone elslse has prepared the way and there is little or no risk. This is descriptive of a moderate, a fence sitter and a parasitical existence, let the other guy take all the risk and then neutralize the accomplishment in order that any parasite can live in the safe zone. Make a hero and then tear them down, it’s a societal risk for all who want to take the risk to accomplish.

The doctor has a valid point. In comparison to other sports, football tends to produce the most significant long term injuries to young athletes. No one said sports in general should should be banned. The suggestion was made that perhaps it would be beneficial not to offer a sport that produces so many long term injuries to young athletes.

Yeah… let’s put all the little boys on drugs and get them to stop climbing trees (might fall) and wrestling and start playing with dolls… the better to produce nice meek little sheeple.

I played football and have loved the game all my life; still I can understand this point of view (feeling the lingering injuries as I get older). I have also been concerned about the large cost of football programs to schools in equipment and travel (and the fuel used for all the traveling fans). Sure it is often a good revenue sport but it also is a big chunk of a school’s budget.

If the schools ban it, maybe the park districts could start a league.

Villanova tried that. A past president didn’t like football so she dropped it. A couple of years later, after the alumni stopped giving, she got the boot and football came back.
