Is this a mountain or molehill? The business owner wants clean sidewalk and the city has created an obstruction that may hurt business. there appear to be two considerations that come into play.

First, how do you keep bird crap off the storefront and sidewalk.

Second, what can be done economically and legally?

The answers to consideration one ranges from kill all the pigeons to close the store or move.

Consideration two is more complex as local codes and practices come into play; but washing the bird crap away is not an answer.

How about an awning that extends out to edge of the sidewalk, then the storefront stay clean and the rain washes the bird crap away with no negative impact on the environment.

Really people are you serious!!

the store owner should personally sue every person involved in enacting this law for loss of income/time, and traumatic injury. get government out of our way and let us get on with life. if politicians want to control other people, bully their spouses or life partners.

Time for the city to clean the sidewalks for free since it is they who are standing in the way of the health issues involved and make sure the city is accountable to the taxpayers for their ill advised thoughtlessness……I would be leading the charge to rid my city of poor leadership.

There are companies here in Corpus that will capture and remove pigeons. The pigeons are then sold to be used for targets a pigeon shoots. Everybody wins (except the pigeons).

Help me out here. It is bad to wash away a small amount of bird poop every day with water that is treated to kill germs but it is good to wash it away with untreated rain water in one big dump to the storm sewer system?

Here is an idea. If you could provide a reservoir at the street edge that would colect the wash off water containing the poop, then suck it up with a wetvac, it could be discharged into the city sewer system where it would be treated like human waste. The first time you do this procedure make sure to get a local TV station to film it and run it on the local news with the irate business owner explaining why he is forced to clean this way. It will ridicule the stupid law and maybe get public sympathy and ultimately changed.

Recondition the pigeons to feed in a different area. Maybe one the city wouldn’t like if it is near by. Gradually place bird seed further and further from establishment to a more desired place for the birds to feed and defecate.

I just don’t understand why this country makes so many laws. Petty and nitpicking laws. Pretty soon there will be a law saying you can only breath a certain amount of air per day.

Maybe the city should make it illegal for it to rain since the effect would be the same.

As to the suggestion of a pee-off, Texas now has a law which flatly forbids the discharge of human waste onto the ground anywhere in the state.

Dogs have hydrants and trees, birds have walkways, cows have flat rocks, fish have reservoirs; but, Texans have to hold it.

Maybe the city water is the real pollutant. I suggest getting the Health Department involved as bird residue could be a health hazzard not just for his business, but other businesses, homes, and government buildings as well. The other potential is that the inspector wants this guys business to go elsewhere like to a buddy of his.

This could become the poster child for how the environmentalists WHACK JOBS have gone to far and that we are regulated to insanity. Where the HE#% do these people think all the bird poop goes when it rains? Are they going to ban birds now? This man should just keep cleaning in the name of hygiene and let the crazies take him to court. Let them explain to a judge how it is better for him to let customers track bird poop into his EATING establishment and not let it go where it naturally needs to go.

Sounds like someone is following the code a little tightly. Sometimes the “letter of the law” is all there is to certain city employees. A carryover from maybe military indoctrination? Not that that’s all bad but sometimes a little bending to work a solution is better. No, washing it out on the street should be avoided. If it rains it’s what happens but if you wash everything down the street drains including leaves and cigarette butts and all the litter people tend to dispose of in the wrong way it does effect the fish and wildlife downstream.
We need the fisheries to survive in the future.

My son had an excellent idea…grab the pigeons, wring their little necks and serve them as “squab” to your patrons! Problem solved…unless another intrusive gov’t agency or animal rights activist protests. I’m sure the pigeons have more rights than that business owner. It is a little short-sighted for the city to not realize the business owner pays taxes which supports the local economy, attracts patrons and perhaps tourists which support the local economy and is even willing to do part of the city’s job of maintaining a public place…for free. And…we all know the emperor is NOT wearing clothes and there is no difference between rainwater washing poo away or water from a hose!!!

All it will take to get the city back in line is one person claiming the city is responsible for making them ill by allowing the bird feces to pile up in front of the dining establishment. Of course, a nice, big public outcry would help, too, since those officials are elected by the people. Unfortunately, most people will not care because it isn’t “their problem”. What they don’t realize is that it is this kind of ridiculous government intrusion that has eroded any semblance of government by “we the people”. As long as the sheep are willing to be led to the slaughter, the government is more than willing to slaughter!

Easy fix. It’s called a Wet-Vac. Dump it in the toilet and sanitary sewer.

This sounds a bit suspicious to me. Does the city have some ulterior motive for this? Do they want to shut down his restaurant for some reason? Will health inspectors go to his restaurant and inform him that the bird droppings are a violation of the health codes and if they are not cleaned up they will shut him down? Store and restaurant owners all over the country sweep and hose down the sidewalks in front of their establishments all the time. Since the city is telling him he can’t clean the sidewalks then why doesn’t the city do it. After all, the sidewalks belong to the city and so they should be maintaining them.

I know, he can put up a screen and invite everyone to pee on the sidewalk to wash the bird sh!t away. After all pee is just as natural as rain.
