College Professor Allegedly Tells Students To Vote For Obama

A college professor in Florida has been placed on leave after allegedly passing out Barack Obama campaign materials. Sharon Sweet of Brevard Community College is being investigated.

Allegedly, Sweet told students to sign a pledge that stated: “I pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.”

The college received a call complaining about the incident. It was then that the school began an investigation.

“Based on the allegations, Associate Professor Sweet has requested, and been granted, a leave of absence without pay effective immediately,” wrote John Glisch, associate vice president for communications at BCC. “The college will continue its investigation into the matter, which will include interviews with all students in her class.”

Under Florida law, an employee of the State cannot “use his or her official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with an election or nomination of officer or influencing another person’s vote or affecting the result thereof.”

    If she did do this, and it certainly seems like she did, she should at the very least be disciplined, if not fired. Using class time, and the authority that comes with being a teacher, is just simply wrong.

      The higher probability is that she is a typical middle aged woman, divorced with grown kids. This is probably closest to the typical demographics.

      Mr Ruiz — You must be a seer. There’s no mention of the professor’s race in the story. Even if there were, you know full well the issue is not what her race or ethnicity is, but what she did.

      Just like you, she was not given an opportunity to choose her parents.

    As an associate professor, Ms Sweet likely has tenure and cannot be fired for what she has done. This isn’t to say that she couldn’t be punished in other ways besides an unpaid leave. For example, early morning classes, no or minimal raises, no promotion to the rank of full professor. These “remedies” would depend on her department head or chairman (promotion would be recommended or not by a rank and tenure committee) and could be grounds for her appeal to her dean or to the provost.

    Changing the subject. If Romney would tell Obama that if any ad about Romney contained anything but the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth he was going to unload on him, and do it. I think that is the only way he will win the election. And try is for voter fraud.
    Every voter will be required to sign a statment that he is who he says he is and put both thumb prints besid his signature. Violators will lose all their govt benefits including social security,medicare, medicaid and food stamps. This would apply to those that help him do it. You think penalty too severe? It’s a felony so just don’t do it. I wish this could get to one of our legistors that has guts to introduce it as a bill.

    It seems that there are several, similar cases of this kind of illegal campaining going on within the Progressive movement! Kathleen Sebelius violates the Hatch Act, THREE times( Twice for illegal campaining & once for lobbying), Gets a pass by the Justice(?) Department!
    Media Matters cooperating with the Justice(?) Department, while the outcome of that is still unknown, who will be investagating this? A clue might be had by looking at the Fast and Furious investigation(?)!

    She knew the risks, and did it anyway. She even asked for the time off after getting caught. I think she planned it this way so she could get some time off….but without pay. I doubt that was in her plan. And no, she should not be allowed to teach anywhere again. You cannot trust liberals. They will do ANYthing to get what they want. The problem with that is….they are never satisfied. If you cave, and give them what they want, they simply file that away and start complaining about the next thing they want. They are hopeless.

    Now here is a real life example of a ‘rocket scientist’ teaching. What kind of moron thinks it is okay to have kids sign a pledge to vote for a particular person (and this particular person at all). Yank her teaching cert and never let her step back in a classroom again. This is the kind of person who is a real danger to our society.

    I wonder what kind of punishment was going to meted out if one did not sign the pledge?

        Actually it was the parents of a student that turned her in over the incident. That’s what is so sad, none of the students turned her in over this incident. Someone was talking about it at home and their parents got involved. What’s wrong with a country that at the college level our children don’t recognize that one of their professors has gone way over the line. I hope the state charges her with voter tampering and put her in jail. She should never teach anything again.

        THe real problem is that the youth of today havent’ been told what their rights and responsibilities are. The “elite” are careful about that. I suspect most of us have had a class in high school called “Civics” or something similar. It taught what the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution meant. It taught what a jury was and what your rights and responisbilities of a citizen of the USA were. Now, you must simply take the word of some professor, judge, etc. that you are to do something. I suspect many of the students in this class assumed that because they were told to do this that they had to do it.

        And I agree with CHRISTOPHER. She will be out of the lime light for a couple of months at most and then will be back teaching again. And I’m sure her local Democrat Committee will be happy to pay her bills while she works with them until the election.

        You could try for facts, instead of bringing up all of these untruths. Obama did not, in any way, do a way with a National Prayer day. To continue saying this after it being completely debunked is not stupid. And it has nothing to do with being PC or not. It has to do with dealing with FACTS and not pretending that they are anything else.

        Obama is not, and has never been, a Muslim. The fact that you keep saying it does not, in any way, make it true.

        As long as the people that we have hired/voted to run our country do so under our laws, I don’t care what religion they are.

        That a minority of people have decided that whatever Obama or the Democrats do is automatically wrong is just plain stupid.

      @bwilly123, I can answer that question with ease. I was a university professor some years ago, and made a few comments that were pro-Bush and all hell broke loose. I merely said I was supporting GWB for president back in 2000 and NOTHING more, and was drummed out… so I learned the hard way that tolerance is a one-way-street with some. I suspect that if this is making the news that her behavior was farm more over the top than what we are seeing… trust me!

        I am a Democrat. I’m very proud of being a Democrat, we are the only party that has been continuously in the US since it’s founding. I am not a liberal. Or a progressive. Or a socialist, Marxist, or any other “ist”. I am willing to discuss facts with just about everyone, but not everyone wants to discuss facts.

        In the run up to the 2004 elections, a supposed friend discovered that I am a Democrat. He told me that I was a traitor to my own country because of it. He was serious. Very, very serious. I am not, of course. I just have different ideas of how get things done. That doesn’t mean that I am right, or that I am wrong. It’s just that I disagreed with him. Thinking about it, though, he never even asked me what my views were. Just the fact that I am a Democrat was enough for him to feel that he had the right to judge me.

        I’ve been seeing on this blog posting that a lot of people are saying that what this teacher did was simply the way that liberals do things. For one thing, liberals are the minority fringe of the left. The Democrats make up the majority by a very wide margin. This attributing an action or view to a whole party, or group, is insane. We are all different. I don’t know of two people, even those in the same party, who grew up in the same house, that agree down the line.

        For another thing, ANY teacher who does what this one did deserves to be disciplined, if not fired. She stepped over a line that should never have been stepped over. She is certainly old enough to know better.

      I don’t want anyone with foolish idealogies involved in our Government, I don’t care from what party they my spring. We already have several hundred of those in office. That’s one of the things i hope we can change over the next decade!

The students knew very well that if they didn’t do as she wanted their grades would suffer but this is counting that there is more than one student that was capable of objecting to her propaganda.
        The Republicans if they are in the majority in colleges even handing out propaganda material of their own do not issue unvoiced threats. There is acknowledged freedom to obey and not obey.
        Thankfully we can talk to each other even if we have to listen to Leftists on this site. We have not reached the point that we have to self censure ourselves in case we get turned in to authorities for wrong speech and thinking.

      I feel quite sure that there were others in the class that support Obama and the same complaint would have been lodged if see had advocated for Romney. As usual the party diehards think of these kinds of comments.and seem to miss the point. This is not a party issue it is an issue of law. What she did was against the law in Florida and is being addressed. I do agree wit one comment, she needs to be fired, she is a stake employee and she broke a state law. Having said this I must say that this is probably the last you will hear of this and nothing will be done.It seems that with this administration nothing is against the law even a total disregard for our constitution.

      Without seeing her contract or the faculty handbook, it’s difficult to know, other than moral turpitude, loss of self-control in class because of substance abuse, or another serious infraction of commonly accepted rules, what could be grounds for almost immediate dismissal.

        In America we do have freedom of speech, but not freedom to indoctrinate. The instructors do not have to be “under the influence of drugs”, the liberal ideological drug is there, no pills necessary. ‘Under the influence is an excuse’, not a reason.

        As an associate professor Ms Sweet probably already has tenure. For her to be promoted to full professor typically requires one or more books, a double handful of peer-reviewed published articles, demonstration of a significant contribution to knowledge, etc.

        Now, Brevard Community College may rank far down on the academic totem pole, but I cannot see a rank and tenure committee, a dean, and a provost foolish enough to approve a promotion for Ms Sweet unless she meets the academic requirements.

        I’ll be surprised if she gets more than a rap on the knuckles. But who besides the Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
