Peanut Butter And Jelly Is Offensive

Peanut Butter And Jelly Is Offensive

An Oregon school principal believes that students need to examine the repercussions of eating peanut butter and jelly.

Last month, the Chief Diversity Officer at the U.S. Department of State announced that phrases like “holding down the fort” and “rule of thumb” could be racially driven expressions. Now, the political correctness police have added another offender to the list: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

An Oregon school principal believes that eating peanut butter and jelly could be an act of intolerance. Verenice Gutierrez of Harvey Scott K-8 School encourages students who eat peanut butter and jelly to ask students of other nationalities: “‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

Gutierrez had a question of her own that she wants people to consider: “What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?”

Portland Public Schools are kicking off a campaign that encourages teachers to acknowledge their “white privilege.”

Gutierrez wrote a letter to her staff: “Our focus school and our Superintendent’s mandate that we improve education for students of color, particularly Black and Brown boys, will provide us with many opportunities to use the protocols of Courageous Conversations in data teams, team meetings, staff meetings, and conversations amongst one another.”

Robb Cowie, the communications director for Portland Public Schools, said that the problem extends beyond just a sandwich.

“Certainly a sandwich isn’t going to do it in itself,” he said. “But it is one of those things that we want to be aware of in all aspects of our instructional practice.”

I am wondering after reading the stupid idea in this article of this Principal if the parents of these children in this School District are finally fed up with this type of stupid thinking and are working their collective A.S.S.E.S off to begin a petition drivew or something to get rid of these fools that have so much influience over their kids minds by having a Recall vote or something to get these fools that are actually mentally damaging their children out of office.

There must be a way for the parents to get this Oregon School Principal named Verenice Gutierrez out of this very important job that has so much influience on the parents childrens lives and their minds.

  • CBUETT

Robert Smith, yes they did serve fish on fridays for the “special” Christians who make up about what 85 percent of our countries population. Why wouldnt they take that into consideration when making the lunch menu.

P.S. I also know that the population of America is not exactly 85 percent Christian. I dont need Flashy, Robert Smith or eddie47 to give me the exact percentage. The U.S has a lot of Christians ok.

  • JimH

PB&J or Chic-Fil- A, what to have for lunch?
Maybe I’ll ask someone on the school board. Or not.

    • Vicki

Have both. PBJ makes a good dessert. :)

  • s c

For what it’s worth, people, I scanned this topic, and it looks as though this website’s utopians aren’t inclined to respond. It’s on the same level as the 2nd Amendment. SOME issues just aren’t “important” to a utopian. And they wonder why so many people have no use for utopians. Go figure.

What is this…are black or brown “Girls” not deserving of a improved education also. It seems Gutierrez is being sexist, and also racist for using the word “BOYS”. Maybe she should be sent to the PC class for retraining.

Perhaps they should get back to teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. All this other stuff is just BS. No wonder kids aren’t learning. All this political correctness and diversity crap is out of hand.

  • Baloney Toney Mahoney

The Mahoney Man says: Only if the Somalis explain why they like their women covered up like X-Mas packages….OOOOOPPPSSS, I mentioned Christmas, that’s not good is it???

The only solution is Baloney sandwichs everyday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • momo

And this, dear reader, is why America is going to hell. Instead of teaching something useful, like math or science, we get “protocols of Courageous Conversations”, it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

  • http://na jsub

Maybe they should go on strike!
Seems to be the answer to everything teachers whine about….

  • Chester

Don’t know if you are aware of this, but there are classrooms and schools where peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are verboten, NOT allowed. Only difference is this has nothing to do with PC, just one student in the whole school who is allergic to peanuts. Seems funny to know that, then see all the complaints because someone is suggesting to the students that they inquire as to whether or not their classmate has some sort of special food they like to eat.

  • Strighttothepoint!!!!!

Don’t the schools have something better to do?This would have been down right funny back in the1950′s!!!!(or down right crazy!!!!)depending on your point of view.

WELTARD: Def: Derelicts of society who live off the system, are more than capable of working for a living and generally do not. Those who feel they are “owed” a better life for nothing. Those who spend productive and non productive time trying to be politically correct. Those with the only goal in life to find ways not to get a job that pays back into the government systems for which they took from. examples, politicians, union bosses, ponzi scheme artists, hackers, Obama Czars, occupiers….

    • Larry K.

I WILL DO AND SAY EVERYTHING THE WAY I WAS RAISED, THE H E L L WITH EVERYTHING THAT IS POLITICALLY CORRECT. HOLD DOWN THE FORT WITH PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY.

    • Johnny

      No doubt on your post.
Too bad the USA has almost more of them than us.
“Us” meaning people that take care of themselves.
Some work for a living and the others vote for a living.

  • Florida Cracker

I’ve finally decided that if something is labeled politically incorrect, then I probably like it.

My problem with “most” teachers/school administrators is that, beginning as a child, they attended primary, middle, high school then college as students then, upon graduation, returned to teach in one of the above environments. Never in their life have they experienced “the real world”, the business world as it exists outside of the typical liberal educational environment. They have never exited their bubble, so they have no clue how the real world works. I like PBJ and still eat them at 55 years old. To say they’re politically incorrect or “an act of intolerance” because some other nationality doesn’t eat them is bullcrap? Get a life! I’m sure there’s food the other nationalities eat that I don’t, but that doesn’t make it bad or pol incorrect and it doesn’t upset me. These people just need to step off their soapbox, work on holding down their own fort and use common sense as a good rule of thumb (if they have any but apparently they don’t).

  • arlo

I really believe this is all due to the fact dumbrats want to control our lives, they might control you, but I will not bend. If you don’t like it, meet me on the firing range!!!!!

  • steven

This silly [expletive deleted] is the real racist, she is probably so fat and ugly. She’s probably not getting any penis butter for jelly for that matter.

If I owned Schmuckers, I would send a truckload of pb&j’s to this school just to see if the foriegn students enjoyed them. Maybe this principal should be educated in that peanut butter was invented by a black guy.

    • LC

Some schools have regulations concerning peanut butter because of other students possibly having peanut allergies. I know that’s not the case here, but it can be related. Some how we are entering into a nation that bends to the concerns of a few only to disregard the concerns of many.
This article and principal is ridiculous! The only purpose I can see in this is to get children of different nationalities involved in conversation with eachother. Children of grade school ages are usually curious and will find their own conversation. No need to lead them into some slanted/racist speech that wouldn’t normally exist.

  • itriedthemall

“‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”
Now that would be an ultimate insult to the student not eating the PBJ! It implies they are not American. It implies they are unfamiliar with American food. It would just be a terribly patronizing question.

    • Vigilant

“Now that would be an ultimate insult to the student not eating the PBJ! It implies they are not American.”

Read the article again. “…encourages students who eat peanut butter and jelly to ask students of other nationalities:”

What part of “other nationalities” do you not understand?

      • itriedthemall

“other nationalities.” I assumed that to mean “other national origins” – students whose families have come to America on either a temporary visa or as an immigrant (legal). Students whose families have made an effort to learn about America and becoming American. While this dialog about food might make them more comfortable, it just sounds insulting to me.

    • AJ

I am a 3rd generation American. My mother used to pack traditional Slovenian lunchs for myself and my brother. I never thought anything was unusual about that, it is what we ate. Was asked several times what I was eating over the years. I never felt anyone was denigrating me or being racist. Matter of fact many of my friends used to make special trips to my house whenever my grandmother baked fresh patiza, they loved it (she did make good patiza) though I was more partial to her lasko. Diversity is a great thing.

      • Buster the Anatolian

“Was asked several times what I was eating over the years. I never felt anyone was denigrating me or being racist.”

And that is the way it should be. If a student brings something different then inquire politely about what they have. That is what should be encouraged. To single them out when they are not eating anything different from what the other students are eating could be insulting if not downright racist.

      • granny mae

You know what I think it is normal for kids to talk about what they are eating at the lunch table. The only time to be concerned is if someone doesn’t have anything to eat and they are hungry, then give them half of your PB&J. I had a girlfriend that use to bring strained baby food to school for her lunch. She had stomach problems and that is what she had to eat. It was ok by the rest of us. We were too busy talking about other thigs to notice. Somebody needs to get a life !

  • Texas Gal

personally I think its an attack on anything caucasian/American. Would PBJ on a flour tortia be ok?

    • cawmun cents

Nope….corn tortilla only….in keeping with tradition.

    • eddie47d

I eat peanuts/other nuts or peanut butter every day and have for several years but seldom use jelly. Peanuts are for the most part nutricious and good protein source.

  • Harold Olsen

When I first read about this a few days ago I started to wonder what this idiot would do if she a saw a student eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Would she take it away from the student. Would she give the student detention (do they still do that or is that now also politically incorrect?)? Would she expell the student for being a racist? I’d love to see her try to punish some student for eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Can you say “lawsuit?” When I was a kid, just about every day I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch at school. I loved them and still do.

    • Vigilant

Harold, how many times have I asked you to actually read the articles to which Mr. Mash links?

Nash is in his usual misrepresentation mode again today. Both the title of this article (“Peanut Butter And Jelly Is Offensive”) and the statement that “An Oregon school principal believes that eating peanut butter and jelly could be an act of intolerance” are unsupported by anything in the linked source.

      That source is http://portlandtribune.com/pt-rss/9-news/114604-schools-beat-the-drum-for-equity

Please go there and read the newspaper article. Nash’s straw man approach puts words and implications in the mouth of the principal that are in no way true.

Verenice Gutierrez may be unbalanced and off center in her PC racial assumptions, but she NEVER said that eating a PBJ sandwich is offensive or intolerant.

      • Larry K.

F-U IS GETTING BETTER SOUNDING EVERY TIME I HEAR STUPID STUFF LIKE THIS.

      • Vigilant

“F-U IS GETTING BETTER SOUNDING EVERY TIME I HEAR STUPID STUFF LIKE THIS.”

And RTFNA (read the flippin’ newspaper article) before you sound off is getting better sounding every time I see an ignorant, gratuitous and shouted comment like this.

      • eddie47d

They are trying to read way to much into this story Vigilant.

      • phideaux

I read your link and it is even worse than the theoritical “racism” in PB&J sandwiches. The article goes on to say she considers most anything that includes whites is racist but a drum corp that excludes whites orientals and American Indiansis being inclusive. I know she doesn’t say it outright but that is the gist of the article.

      • Vigilant

phideaux, it was not my link, it was Bryan Nash’s link.

And if you can find ONE reference within it that says that eating a PBJ sandwich is “offensive” or “intolerant” (Nash’s words), then point it out to me.

The gist of the article is not my specific concern; my point is to demonstrate the shoody journalistic practices of Bryan (“Yellow Journalism”) Nash.

      • Vigilant

…and maybe they are “shoody,” I meant to say “shoddy.”

      • phideaux

Vigilant that link is NOWHERE in the article it is in your post I replied to.

      • Vigilant

Wrong, phideaux. The article is linked from the phrase (in blue) “act of intolerance.”

The other link, also in blue, is “racially driven expressions.”

  • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON

    Verenice Gutierrez IS A NUT.

    • czman75

I would use the phrase “mentally unstable”. Better to just ignore people like this and continue on with our daily PB&J samiches, maybe even with banana slices instead, for a change.

      • http://gravatar.com/cbgard Carlucci

Or the “Elvis” special – hollowed out french bread stuffed with peanut butter, honey, bananas, and (best of all) bacon – ! Or to make a simple “Elvis”, fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, like you would make a grilled cheese in a pan – make sure to use lots of real butter.

      • Wumingren

Ignoring these people is what has gotten us this far into la la land. You can’t ignore them, you have to go after them.

  • Vicki

I think it is time to have a sandwich. PBJ for the win.

    • http://na jsub

read my mind – in fact, I may eat one every day for a week….

      • http://gravatar.com/carlucci Carlucci

No kidding. Now I’m jonesing for a PBJ sandwich, even though I haven’t had any bread for over a month now (I’m reading that fascinating book “Wheat Belly”). Off to the kitchen for PBJ and a big glass of milk – ! : )

  • swampfox

you got to be kidding me,

      what is a yuhoo?

  • independent thinker

If the personell at this school district has time to consider the PC-ness of eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the staff at that school district is bloated to the point of being ridiculous and needs to be cut in half.

    • FreedomFighter

Paradoxical Quote of The Day From Ben Stein:

“Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured… but not everyone must prove they are a citizen.”

Now add this, “Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens.”

…and now peanut butter and jelly politically correct police…

dont mention that sandwich you may offend that person your pay for food stamps, medical care, day care that is illeagly in your country taking you job and not paying any taxes, driving without a license and insurance and voting without ID.

When I went to public school they served fish every Friday. It was to accomidate the “special” christians.

I totally agree and just imagine what NABISCO is thinking ” are we going to have to rename the OREO cookie”. I’ve got it the “OBAMA” surely they ca not find fault with that.

      • wandamurline

If they are offended because they are on food stampe, I say “good”. If they don’t want to be offended, I suggest that they get a job….I am sorry, I like to help people, but the welfare system is being used by people who could support their own family. The Declaration of Independence says you have the right to “pursue” happiness….it does not state that you are “entitled” to something paid for by others.

      • eddie47d

Where did anyone say anything about food stamps or welfare? What does peanut and butter and jelly sandwiches have to do with white privilege. There is no connection to that at all. White privileged kids always bought their lunch and if they did bring a sack lunch it would be lunch meat or tuna fish not peanut butter.

      • carrobin

I didn’t see anything in the article that said anyone but the author called peanut butter & jelly “offensive.” Where’s the “political correctness” problem?

      • http://personalliberty.com Ed Weber

So now they want us to call PBNJ a Ham n Cheese? LOL

      • Wumingren

Ed, they can’t go with ham & cheese either, as ham would offend the Muslims. Oh, and a school in North Carolina took away a pre-schoolers turkey & cheese sandwich and made the kid eat chicken nuggets on a claim that the sandwich was not healthy, so maybe we all need to eat falafel and goat meat (halal certified, of course) so as not to offend the most offensive group on Earth. Or maybe the school staff can all eat s-h-i-t and die.

    • s c

Independent thinker, please realize that the Great Con Artiste in the White House and this topic are part of the same basic issue. That is, Comrade Obummer looks at Orwell’s 1984 as though it’s a tech manual, and that Amerika will be “better” if only we’d surrender and put on our chains.
ANYONE in a school who thinks peanut butter and jelly is offensive is someone who will willingly be a suck-up for Obummer. Do we need ANY people like that in ANY school? Now, re-think your position, and see this crap for what it is – and who in the W H and Kongress – need to be kicked out of office and Amerika. I T, it’s freedom and common sense O R Obummer and SLAVERY. Period.

    • Mary

Excellent statement! Ridiculous to say the least (pb&j) but if I might add my concerns over an additional statement… the principles letter to her staff… (focus on increased education especially for black and brown boys). ????????????? Let’s see, what about black and brown girls? What about ALL boys & girls? Am I missing something here? I’m short on time and haven’t read all posts or history of this school/district so forgive me if I am (missing something). If I’m not than my concern has increased even more! I think a new/maybe more thorough back ground check needs to be completed on this principle. What is her agenda???

    • http://google gary gerke

These people need to teach our children to read and write, they need to stop worrying about political correctness of alinsky and others. America is turning into a Communist nation.

    • duane

Amen to that and as a parent I would tell the school to go to hell and do not pass go or try to collect $200.00. This is the most insane piece of political correctness to come down the pike in a long time. What this country needs is a good five cent cigar.
