Obama: GOP Wants Young Voters To Stay Home

President Obama spent time last week trying to sway college-age voters.

President Barack Obama, trying to rekindle enthusiasm with American college students, told a group near the University of Virginia last week that Republicans are “banking” on low youth voter turnout in November.

The President told the crowd that their vote matters more now than ever before.

“You’ve got the same stream of cynics who are telling you that change is impossible, you can’t make a difference, you won’t be able to close the gap between how things are and how they should be,” Obama said.

Obama added that the GOP believes young voters “were naive last time when you had all that hope and change stuff.”

He continued to say that Republicans, “will tell you how bad things are over and over again, and they’ll helpfully add it’s all Obama’s fault. And what they’re hoping is that, even if you don’t vote for them, because you know what they peddle doesn’t work, what they do hope is that you get so discouraged that you just stay home.

“That’s what they’re banking on,” Obama said. “I don’t believe that. I don’t think you believe that.”

The President’s remarks, as inflammatory as they may seem to some people, may hold some truth. The GOP establishment shunned and disenfranchised a swath of mostly young, libertarian-leaning Ron Paul supporters over the course of the primary season. Many of those potential voters, who will likely write in Paul or vote third party in November, have elicited a familiar harsh criticism from GOP mainliners: “A vote for Paul or Johnson, is a vote for Obama.”

        I don’t mean to defend their political ideals, but please don’t call either Clinton DUMB. They are extremely intelligent and very smart individuals, though on a different political path. Bill was groomed to be president by the Democrats for 40 years.

    For an old guy like me to communicate to the newest voters is quite difficult. First off no matter what I might say they interpret it in a whole different way. Trying to argue politics with a “youngster” one needs to choose their words very carefully and then it still probably won’t work. These kids grew up in a very different world than we did. The bottom line is jobs for this generation. If they can be convinced of where and how jobs are created they might figure out for themselves how to vote.

    Neither party is representing younger or older people. Obama’s irresponsible and wasteful spending is unsustainable. Some of the younger generation recognize that their kids are going to be stuck with paying the debt. Some of the younger generation want to take advantage of government’s false promises. I don’t see either party reducing the size of government or reducing the debt. It’s just a matter of time, before economic and political reality set in. Vote your principles.

    I was 21 in 1968. I watched every appearance by both Humphrey and Nixon. I listened to every news story about them. I watched both conventions. I was ready to vote. I wonder if any of the youngsters are doing that this year. (Should I apologize for calling them youngsters?)

      Back then most elementary students were taught the workings and importance of government. The great social experiment of the 60s> removed that from the curriculum so that socialism could come in.

    Well gotta plenty, with some handouts they hopefully continue to get an MBA and convince their family to fund them and than, FORWARD, the whole family gets fast food jobs and maybe, just maybe, they get free housing somewhere because they gave up their residence to assume their youngster would carry on successfully with an MBA.

Young person enters college 2008. 4 years later, obummer wants another 4 years of free housing , lots of golf time, extravagent family vacations and all the perks and assigns gophers in his admin.. Young person graduates, qualifies for fast food employment, moves in with parents and faces massive debt for graduating college. Obamanation says, ” FORWARD ” ……huh!

    The majority of the youth vote as well as the majority vote of all hangs on the effect of the 30 second TV politicomercial (also bombarding the internet). Of course, quantity and frequency will be of great importance, but timing and design are crucial. Today, this is how ignorance is supplied with “knowledge.” As usual, bias will become more biased. 2012 will be a great year to judge the intrinsic value of superpacs as well as the very nature of campaign financing.

    This Country is so divide, I have never in my 35 years of voting seen this much talk of who is right and who is wrong…What i don’t get is why wouldn’t we want to help each other? Seams that every one is right,not leaning right but right..With all that wrong with us,why can’t we just do what right,Help people that help them self’s..Health Ins. I’ve payed for my self and my family’s for ever, I don’t see why its bad to have this new Health stuff..I don’t get it..I would rather pay for other to have it then to pay some ins. comp. to do it..I do feel that If you work hard,you reap the the rewards but to be able to lose every thing cause you lose your job and in six months you are homeless to..why wouldn’t we want to help each other..Then we have this other guy up their with repeal and replace,what after it cost this country lots of money to do,then what, have these other people do it again ? I didn’t vote for Obama last time, But what’s up their only makes me feel that if i vote for the other guy,I’m voting for a “Every man for them self” Type world…I want this world to be war free,I want my son home from Afganny, I want this Country of are’s to be free of what others think we should be doing.I only care about people not war,not money but us..

      Jerry, thanks for your input. IMO if this nation struggles along for another 15 years you will become a right-sider, conservative, or libertarian leaner. Experience will show you that government/society cannot take from the haves and give to the have-nots and survive. It is like a thief taking your stuff you bought with money you earned and they take it and somebody else eventually benefits. Sure the fence and pawn shop the government has some cash flow in the middle but ultimately YOU are still ripped off. Why should you NEED insurance? You should not have been stolen from in the first place. The lack of integrity and values today.

      I believe that eventually people will realize that the government cannot help all the have-nots…many of the have-nots have freely chosen their path. It’s a twisted society now, but if you lose everything in 6 months that tells me that you might be living beyond your means. Saving and planning is important, not just spending all you make. That is a lesson that is lost on the 40 yrs and younger generation. For example, Jerry, you’ve worked 33>37 years already. Even with inflation you should have minimum 1 full year of living expenses saved that would allow you to do what you must to find other employment. I am not attacking you, I am just making an illustration. When the hyperinflation hits we all will be in a sad condition.

    For once, I find I can agree with the President. And it is not unusual for student youth to be swept along by idealism and strong rhetoric; being naive. However, when they start to dig deeper into Party philosophy, economics and political history they discover the reality of the world. That is when political maturity comes about and the realization of how the Parties operate essentially. Hopefully, the youth of 2008 has gone through this process and understands that the “Politics of Envy” is a classic Socialist ploy when the ruling Administration is in trouble. Look across “the Pond” to see how Socialism and its Utopian ideals

They were never taught the simple basics, the foundation of understanding. IMO 80% of old people can’t tell you the simplest thing about how its works… but they talk a good game. IMO the younger generation will continue to wallow along in feel-good rhetoric swayed by the BS media. The biggest problem I see for this election is that the over 40s feel they won’t vote because it does little good, and the 20s feel that they must vote so government will help finance their life. Go do a poll at a state supported college.

God’s government is the answer to all of man’s problems and will soon take control of all the earth according to Daniel 2:44: “In the days of these kings (our time) shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom ……shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.” God’s kingdom is the rightful government for this earth and will replace all other governments in the near future according to Bible prophecy. The only question is: WHAT GOVERNMENT DO WE PERSONALLY SUPPORT? Our future life depends on active support of God’s Kingdom as Jesus said: (Matthew 24:14) “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” WHERE DO YOU STAND?

      Wow, that’s really impressive. I am a born again Christian (large C), and facts are that EVERYONE has to live in the here-and-now. This is the reality we live in. People aren’t on the earth just to exist until eternity comes for them. Most “Biblical” people ignore that they will be judged by how well they performed IN THIS LIFE. What we do, the standards of judgement we exercise, the respect we have for ourselves and others….. etc. What measure we mete to others will be used on us. What sins we bind on earth will be bound in heaven, etc… What we all, Christians especially, do now will be judged both on this earth and in the world to come. So stop looking for the easy way out and do something productive. WTSHTF don’t be surprised if there is NO rapture (its a heresy) and just like Jesus said in red letters that believers will have to stay here and ride out the troubles and trials of the tribulations.

    What I find more than incredible, is the media will attack Paul Ryan on being factual and just hammer, and hammer away, yet Biden says something like “they’ll put y’all in chains” and he’s viewed as a Billy Carter sort of guy, oh don’t pay him no mind, he’s just crazy Uncle Joe! I do totally agree if we don’t start getting some courageous leaders in our top spots that a strong belief in the Creator of all Life, and living a principled life, then we are doomed to the wreckage heap of time. A free country founded on ideals of religious freedom, the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness gone awry by those who would corrupt us from within.

    If you were a young person who voted for Obama in 2008, would you bother to go to the polls to vote again? With the economy leaving young people staying in their homes without jobs, don’t you think they were left without hope and the change not good. If the liberal education of colleges does not lead them to vote again for Obama, Obama is hoping that they stay away from the polls, because they may have gotten smart and may choose to vote for the Republican party if they have not been totally disillusioned by the Obama farce.

      Late teens and early twenties, I doubt they are spending much time worrying about which optional class to take to be able to slide through with a passing grade. At that age they are either in college or looking for work, and neither of those is much of an inducement to spend your free time watching the news. Will tell you like I told someone else on here, these kids are NOT stupid, just ignorant,and that can be cured, but it will take someone willing to work with them, on THEIR level, to do so.

    this is just my theory, but let’s say in 2008 when students gathered in their dorm rooms late at night they weeped with joy because of barack obama’s running for president. what a country! they even raced from purdue university to their homes in illinois to vote again. now this isn’t theory, this was verifiably true back then, oprah winfrey hyped obama up, remember? and bumper stickers were proudly seen coast to coast. now in 2012 the students are still weeping, no oprah and all the bumper stickers are faded and half peeled off.

There are a lot of people who got caught up in the hype of having an African American for president….many placing their votes on Obama’s skin pigmentation, a shield that he uses as a sword. Now, there is less enthusiam as he has not kept any promises that he made. The American African American has a heritage of having had great grandparents who were slaves or grandparents who participated in the civil rights of the 60′s to obtain equality. But, if the true African AMERICANS of this country looks at the history of Obama’s heritage, they would find something completely different. You see, Obama’s heritage comes from Kenya where he is of Arab descent and it was the Arab descent b l a c k people who were rounding up their own kind and selling them to the slavers from America. So, you see, Obama has nothing in common with the African American except his color….his ancestors were selling the African American’s great grandfathers into slavery. A different aspect of color in America.

        It’s actually not being stupid, but just not being educated by our public indoctrination centers called public schools, which actually dumb-down our children instead of giving them a true education. I’ve never not known who the President or Vice-President has been since my high school days and classes in American History and Social Studies, from 1965 till today. But then we had no Teacher’s Unions, and the education of our youth was the first priority, not the teacher’s pay, vacations, tenure, medical insurance, and retirement programs, which today are the priorities of our public schools, along with the pay of the union heads, who are now the leeches of our educational system. Before Teacher Unions, the USA was ranked first in the world for educationg it’s children, but since Teacher Unions the USA is now ranked 27th in the world for educating it’s children, with tons of more money for teachers and benefits that make the private sector unions envious. What other change has happened to our public school system that have caused the change in the world ranking of the education the USA gives it’s youth, with a few 3rd world nations ahead of us, which proves it’s not the money being thrown at our educational system, which the Teacher Unions claim is never enough and the reason for the decline in their results, which the unions keep them from being held accountable for. Who cares if our college students know who the President and Vice-President are, the teachers still get their envious pay and benefits, and that’s all that matters. And college professors and teachers are as much to blame as the Teacher Unions, for they have rung in the social and communistic system of education we now suffer from in the USA, for the unions now run the educational systems in the USA, as does the socialistic and communistic tenured professors run our colleges and universities.

      I don;t believe that the term “Stupid” fits the majority of our youth. It does seem evident that many are Ignorant. Ignorant is a much. much easier fix!
      It’s also appearent that large numbers are “Knee-jerk Reactionarys” ! 2008- Barack Obama’s their man! 2012- Ron Paul is the Man-of-the-Hour. This extremeist swing usually finds a balance when they can rely more on thier own empirical knowledge and less on theoretical rhetoric!

        Ted, I believe that the adjective “ignorant” extends well beyond the youth these days. We’ve now had generations of socialist programming in the public so-called “education” system.

        The Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s Civic literacy test shows that the average score of all Americans tested (of all age groups) is 49%.

        “Less than half can name all three branches of the government.

        Only 21% know that the phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people” comes from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

        Although Congress has voted twice in the last eight years to approve foreign wars, only 53% know that the power to declare war belongs to Congress. Almost 40% incorrectly believe it belongs to the president.

        Only 55% know that Congress shares authority over U.S. foreign policy with the president. Almost a quarter incorrectly believe Congress shares this power with the United Nations.

        Less than one in five know that the phrase “a wall of separation” between church and state comes from a letter by Thomas Jefferson. Almost half incorrectly believe it can be found in the Constitution.”

        If any semi intelligent person will listen to Obama, You can feel the PANIC in his voice. You can also listen to his myrmidons on the network talk shows, and you will hear the redundant demo talking points, with vacuous ideas.

      What can expect when you look at what is taught in the schools? They learn that America was formed even though George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were evil slave owners. That the cold war is was the reason for America starting global warming. That World War II would not have happened if America had not bombed Hiroshima. That you cannot ridicule fellow students unless they disagree with the ACLU. That you don’t need to learn how to speak, write, or read because someone else will do it for you and tell you what to do.
      What each of us can do is at least make sure our own children get an education (as opposed to spending 12 years in school). Teach them history, literature, and civics. That doesn’t necessarily mean home schooling, but you can certainly supplement what they learn elsewhere. And above all, lead by example.

The big problem with these kids is that they can actually see no reason to study the government. Most of them have their hands full just trying to stay alive and out from under mom and dad’s feet. Ignorance CAN be cured, stupidity such as I get a good dose of on here from some of the individual postings, is forever.

        Blah blah blah blah. When parents and adolescent children CHOOSE to be ignorant, that is stupid gone to seed. They CHOOSE the result of poor education all the while knowing full well that uneducated incompetent people are hopelessly limited in their social and economic values. THAT is why there is massive envy, hate, and division regarding rich/upper class people. SOME kids actually learn because they WANT to. Others believe in welfare checks and crime for a living. FACT. You people can argue it until the end of society, but historical facts prove that the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree.

    Apparently, a lot of 20 somethings are a bit uninformed. Several months ago, Fox did a man on the street thing with 20 somethings, showing pictures of people such as Pelosi, Reid, Biden and Obama. Most of them had no idea who ANY of them were. When asked who the vice president was, most said it was Dick Cheney. When asked who Adolf Hitler was, most said they had never heard of him and one said he thought he was the head of Homeland Security. Several, when asked who Barack Obama and Joe Biden were, said they had never heard of them.
