Does avoiding Facebook make you a psychopath?

If you have avoided Facebook, there is a strong possibility that you are a psychopath.

This shocking allegation comes from the United Kingdom’s largest news source, Daily Mail. In an article, reporters for the newspaper point out the fact that both accused Aurora, Colo., mass murderer James Holmes and Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik lacked accounts on the social networking site.

Though the two were not on Facebook, Holmes was on an adult sex social network called Adult Friend Finder and Breivik had an account on Myspace. But, the Daily Mail article specifically refers to Facebook as being a necessary part of the daily lives of healthy modern people.

Its authors go on to note that human resources departments researching résumés of job applicants have become wary of individuals who do not have an account on the site, because the applicants could be socially inept or may have deleted their account because of too many red flags.

Also, the article notes that single people might need to avoid becoming romantically involved with individuals who are not on Facebook.

The article concludes: “And this is what the argument boils down to: It’s the suspicion that not being on Facebook, which has become so normal among young adults, is a sign that you’re abnormal and dysfunctional, or even dangerous…”

What the Daily Mail does not point out, however, is that some people may decide to avoid Facebook as a simple matter of privacy.

Currently, the social networking company operates software that monitors chats and posts for indications of criminal activity among its users. When the scanning software flags a suspicious chat exchange, it notifies Facebook security employees, who can then determine if police should be notified. It is not clear whether the scanned chats are permanently logged by Facebook.

It is also known that Facebook has financial ties to technological investment firms linked with the Central Intelligence Agency and is frequently used as a source for government information snoops.

    Incidently, they call these people “sociopaths” now rather than “psychopaths”. They are the exact same thing except there is a bad conitation to the word “psychopaths”.

    There are many psychopaths who are fully functioning members of society. They are able to set aside those tendencies for other reasons. It is those who can’t who usually end up in prison.

        This is a question asked by psychologists of prison inmates to determine if they are psycho or not. Those who answer this correctly (as you did) are psycho – those who don’t aren’t. The psychologists say that the real differece between a psycho and a normal person is that psychos see things only as whether it will benifit them or not. Others have enough empathy to see the side of others and won’t think of killing someone just to get a chance of seeing someone else they have an interest in.

    I don’t use it either. From what I’ve seen, FB is basically a way for people to become a “star” – at least in their own minds. Many go to extremes to get people to look at them. I have no interest in the lives of others and even less interest in others knowing about my own life. Why should I parade all the family’s dirty laundry for everyone to see and know? I dislike “reality” TV for the same reason.

    Don’t use FB and have no need for it. I also don’t pay any attention to ads that have the FB symbol on them.

    FB cannot be successful since not everyone will use it. It’s like US Mail only delivering to one side of the street, not useful at all………

    This was written by a person who supports government control of your lives. It does not work if you have independent thinkers who do not follow the crowd. I do not use facebook because it is a waste of time and effort as an advertising medium. It is social media only, just what the name implies

    I do have a facebook account, however, I think that it is in general a waste of time. It is a useful tool that I use from time to time, but putting every pointless thought and photo or telling everyone on the planet where you will be tonight is a waste of computer time and energy.

      My daugher in law did that. Until we pointed out to her that if you put everything on FB you can tell a burglar where you live, what valuables you have, and when the house will be empty. Now she only posts pictures for her family, who live in another country. Most people don’t realize just what info they are giving away. I’ve also heard of a cop who identified the location and habits of a fifteen year old girl that way – and scared the girl and her family half to death by showing up at her house to tell her to be more careful since it would be an excellent way for a pedophile to find and kidnap her.

    Although I do have a facebook account, I am very selective as to who I let in and what information I place on the site. I do not like divulging personal information in this new age of identity theft and fraud. Social networking is the new fad and while everyone likes to try out something new, it signals to me how easily people are led by the nose. In this article, it suggests quite literally that you are not mentally balanced if you don’t have an account which is initiation through intimidation. The ones who make such a suggestion are the ones to watch out for.

    I’ve always seen facebook membership as a sign of narcissism, and a POSSIBLE indication that someone lacks real social skills. and is uncomfortable interacting with other people in-person.

    In addition, there are MANY people who view facebook as a complete waste of time. And for people with full, healthy social lives, that waste of time is an unnecessary distraction.

    I find it disturbing that we’re already seeing a mentality that “If you’re not drinking the koolaid like the rest of us, then there is something wrong with you and you are a threat to the common good.”.

    Yes, indeed. If you choose not to partake of the mind-numbingly stupid social network, then what? Do they round you up and send you to “facebook re-integration classes”?

    Give me a break already…….

      You have it all wrong. Other than kids, I have found no adults who judge someone for not using internet social networking. It’s great for promoting business and also finding jobs too.

        Oh, yes it does, 45. It’s called networking. And even if a job isn’t found, at least people can come up with ideas and suggestions. It is also a great way to get out organizations’ messages, to sign petitions and support causes. Many people with home businesses use it to promote themselves also.

      I would like some clarity on this statement, please. I don’t see the connection between social networking and narcissim, a lack in other social skills and any possible discomfort in interaction with people in person. Your connection tends to lean toward an individual that might be severly introverted. I just don’t see your slant on this.

    Whether or not one is on facebook it shows you are somewhat capable of independent thought and rationality oif you can deal with it, that you are seeking social interaction and feedback on your thoughts. That said facebook has an overwhelmingly leftist agenda if you are someone like Jan Morgan who becomes a powerful voice for the right, you are apt to be banned repeatedly.

    You know I tried facelessbook and found it to be a totally banal endeavor. I got tired of seeing stupid baby pictures of everyone’s supremely adorable little one who they are certain is adored worldwide. One person alerted everyone each and every time she took a nap or had a bowel movement. There was never any intelligent or interesting interaction and eveyone seemed to be determined that all discussion had to be “nice” which liberals interpret to be meaningless for their cerebral function never surpasses a fourth grade level. I firmly believe falessbook as a passing fad.

      So only liberals use FB? That is laughable. It is used for business growth too.. Any business that does not have a FB presence is missing out on great exposure. Only more sensitive, open minded men are interested in FB (other than kids and stalkers – of whom I have had no problem with).

    None of my family is on FB for a very good reason – We like our privacy. My husband and I also have dumb phones because we don’t want people tracking us. All that texting and sending emails via phone is very insecure. You’d be surprised at the number of people who don’t have their wireless networks locked down. Call me old fashioned, call me paranoid, call me what you will, but my business is not everyone else’s business and vice versa.

      i agree. i have no t ever used facebook and have no desire to. i also have no cellphone. it would probly be like having everyone following you everywhere. don’t want that. i use a computer but i watch what i do very carefully. i got bit once and really watch out. i do not look at anything that sounds too good to be true or sounds suspicious. i kinda believe face book would open vulnerbility to many problems.seem everything has a way to be gotten around and a lot of people pay the price.

        don – I went back to school at 62, and it boggles my mind how these kids constantly text in class or can’t wait to get ou of class to check their phones. The need for constant comuncation is ridiculous. I use my cellphone for emergencies and also to use outside the house because my local phone co. charges too much for long distance calls.

        I agree. In fact, I tend to disconnect my computer from the phone system unless I am on internet at the time. The government, at least, can tap in and see what is on it – and they do every day. I know what you mean about not believing what you see on it either. My son used to call me frequently about offeres “too good to be true”. They were. I could usually find something in it that made it a problem or a trap. When he checked, he would find out I was usually right. So he just deletes them now as I do. I told a cell phone salesman once that “they got me at work and they got me at home. I’d be darned if I gave them the chance half way between.” A phone is for MY convenience, not those who want to call me.

    I have enough demands on my time from people I KNOW. I wish I could find a way to get rid of E-mail. I use it to communicate with family and friends (real ones) and take care of personal business. Unfortunately, just having an account seems to draw all kinds of nuisances. Of the 100 or so I get every day, I read perhaps 10 or 12. The rest are deleted without opening. They are usually junk mail, the kind that goes from the mailbox to the circular file. Some are cons and some are attacks. And I’m a psychopath because I don’t want to open myself to MORE of this? No thanks.

      I agree with you, I once replied to an advertisement that would give me 5 insurance quotes in the next 10 minutes. Within 2 weeks I had 200 spam emails every day. I has taken me two years to get back to almost being spam free. I would never use anything that would open me to another deluge of crap from people and companies that I have never heard of and don’t want to hear from. The hours of productive work I lost daily clearing out and emailing people to take me off their lists could have been better used for things I wanted to do.

      FB is not made for what you think it is, think “COVERT” methods of garnering Intel on you. Most people are so bloody mindless thay will put intel about themself on line that can be used to incriminate them when the TIME comes.
      Just as you never volunteer intel with any form of Police on anything, you should never freely give out any intel on your home, travels, and or business issues family matters etc..

      As it is your intel is sold by FB to many business who will then
      start working on selling you stuff, not unlike if you have cable TV.
      Or worse!

      Yea them piles of crap you get in the Post – you know all them adverts etc. where did you think they come from?
      Thats right the cable co. or your phone co. sold your watch list’s sights visited etc., if they didn’t rape you already on the cost of a faulty worthless product – as it is, { this adds insult to injury.}

      In case most of you still don’t get it, “YOU LIVE in a POLICE state.”

        TIME – I prefer to keep it simple. Facebook is just a social site. I don’t doubt some of what you say. Of course, the internet is a veritable treasure chest of info on people. I prefer to not live in fear; however, I am not one of those people who posts everything I do online. I am a much more knowledgeable person due to the internet in general, and FB can be a comfort, especially to those who are homebound and those with limited mobility. It has also resulted in reconnections, marriages, new friendships and just info sharing. FB was not created for info gathering.

        One can do as they so please – but in the end the results of ones indulgences has a weight of its own, measured not by man, but by the most high POWER.

        The internet is a “treasure trove of info on people”? I’m glad you think so and like it. Frankly, I have no interest in “info on people”. Most are too boreing for words to discribe. I don’t care to be bored and I don’t care to bore others about myself. I’ll spend the time on something else I do like.

        I opened a FB account a few years or ago to get in contact with a few family members that I had lost touch with. I’ve sinced blocked my account, got tired of FB email alerts and every “Tom. Dick & Harry” came out of the wordwork wanting to “friend” me. Between that and the fact that I don’t need to know who’s going shopping and when, what someone had for lunch or dinner or what someone’s children did or did not do that day. I don’t care what other’s like to “gossip” about but if that’s what they want to do…it’s a free country…I just ain’t one to participate, it ain’t my cup of tea!

        We are coming to a point in TIME when things are going to decay at a break neck speed. Both of you understand what I mean; of that I am quite sure.

        I signed up for FB not so I could have a lot of ‘friends’, but because I wanted to have a record of my’comments’ to sites like this – essentially Christian and conservative. I don’t have any ‘friends’ on FB except for one – I’m not sure how I got that one – and I don’t interact with them. I admit I’m ‘ technologically challenged’, and just haven’t bothered trying to get rid of this ‘friend’, or really know how to use FB. I want FB and ‘the government’ to know how much and why I am so against their evil regime, kind of like throwing it in their face. I’m not afraid and I’m armed. I won’t live in fear of what I’m pretty certain is going to happen anyway – and I’ve been flagged long before FB came into being.
        Technology has been sold to us as for our benefit – this is the big lie! I remember life even before answering machines for the telephone and how much different it was. We have been drastically socially engineered by technology, among other things – I’m no Luddite – but thecnology is NOT our friend. Believe it or not writing this comment on a computer through the internet is not a contradiction to the last statement.
        Between the public library system and the internet, this is our only access to info that is not part of the lies of the status quo being shoved down our throats by the evil swine who run things on this planet. There is an exception to every rule.
        Am I a psycopath, as the Daily Mail would have me think? I’m also white, male, Christian, heterosexual, protest against abortion, believe in the US Constitution, hunt and eat meat and like I said, own guns.That makes me an enemy of the state! Am I likely to go on a killing spree because of that – not likely. I couldn’t afford the ammunition and besides I don’t get out much. I live in the middle of nowhere and avoid urban areas and the people who populate them and can’t afford the gas to get there.
        I know about this ‘warm and fuzzy’ seeming, police state we live in and have been wide awake for a long time. I just refuse to be afraid and hide, I would rather stand up and say what I think – I am still capable of thought – than cower in the illusion of autonomy and safety.

      You don’t know what you’re talking about. The people I know on Facebook all have healthy relationships, normal lives, jobs and many friends. For me it is a learning experience and a way to support causes I follow, as way as a way to keep in touch with what is going on with my family living far from me. It is also a great way to reconnect with people from the past. Plus it’s fun! :-)

      Of course, I do not agree with the stupid Daily Mail article. However, i do think that people who belittle FB just take themselves and their opinions too seriously and have very closed minds.

        There is a guy in Colorado Springs that robbed establishments and then bragged about it on Facebook.Someone turned this information over to the police and he was tracked down. People looking for notoriety will do just about anything for attention so it takes all kinds.

        Brad – The simple-minded may use FB and Twitter (which I do not like) for constant contact but not those of us who have lives and minds. Also, i would point out that it is mostly women who use FB (other than teens), and, of course, you would not know how women’s minds work.

I agree with Horton, people especially our young people, who rely on face book lack social skills to communicate with people face to face. I have a lot of friends who are addicted to the crap on face book and some are becoming reclusive. I think face book is for morons like your self who cannot function in the real world.

        This problem goes further than merely FB. As example, my cousins’ husband is an engineer and has told me of the problems they have been having, suffering through actually, with new, fresh out of college, engineers that are so tied to their cell phones “texting” that there is a true “communications” problem within the company. He said that he has had to go through many one on one sessions with most of them simply to get them to talk, make phone calls, whatever it may take to solve an engineering problem, not text everything. So, if this exists within the field of engineering who’s to say that it doesn’t exist elsewhere? FB, just as much as texting, opens a door to more of a problem than it may initially appear. It all depends upon how closely attached, better yet – blatantly addicted, young kids have become to their new hi-tech toys. Is the new technologies helpful, basically? Yes, they are. But as so many other things, if you allow yourself to use it to much IT will be in control of you, not the other way around. Would you not agree? The same applies to video games, does it not? Are there who knows how many people that are so addicted to their X-Box that they spend hours upon hours each day struggling minute by minute to “win the game”. Enjoy FB but at least be aware of to what extent you should ever allow IT to control you more than you may realize.

        Yes, I understand your disagreement but hasn’t the level of technology that we have reached also enabled us to accomplish more, more quickly, more efficiently? Is not the landing of CURIOSITY on Mars a prime example of this? You talk about “threading a needle”. Even more so, isn’t what we’re doing right here also an example that you yourself are very much involved with? I both see and understand what you’re saying and insofar as hi-tech “has made us lazy” yes, in many ways that’s true. Yet isn’t that also what I was saying, “you should (never/ever) allow IT to control you more than you may realize.” Again, it is not wise to allow the technology to ultimately be the controller, not the controllee. The example I set forth fits into what you’re saying though. The young engineers were to lazy to simply talk with someone to work out a problem. Instead, they had to “text”. As long as there is a continuous sheer fascination with each new cell phone or computer or video game that comes out on a regular basis we will have this problem and it will grow and grow and grow. If we ever get hit with an EMP attack many people of all age groups will go totally bonkers – no power, no cells, no computers, no X-Boxes etc. And as you’ve said – “quality minds which form independent ideas” will unfortunately become a rarity, literally. We’ll recover, in time, but it won’t be overnight!

        I am torn with regards to facebook. I am careful about what I post on facebook because I understand that even with tight security settings, it isn’t secure. On the otherhand, I have made multiple political friends through facebook that have become face-to-face friends. Also, I have friends all over the world. Most of them, I would never be able to keep in touch with. Phone calls to someone 6-12 hours away doesn’t work very well. When the earthquake happened in Chile several years ago, we had numerous friends in the area. We were able to find out that they were all OK. One friend’s parents lost their house, so we were able to coordinate getting funds and supplies to help them out. This would’ve been nearly impossible to coordinate without facebook. I also have family all over the country. It is much easier to post some family picture or funny child comment on facebook and everyone quickly knows what is going on. My cousin was pregnant with twins and having complications. She put daily situation briefings on facebook which was much easier than emailing each friend daily because we all wanted to keep up with the status.It can be a useful tool if you understand the limitations, security issues, and are careful to not let it take over your life.

        I have friends who use facebook. 2 that I know of have had their info distributed to who knows what agencies. I refuse to compromise my computer and my personal info by joining ANY social network. I’ve sure cleaned up my email by unsubcribing from all newsletters that REQUIRE me to join them on facebook. I have NOT nor will I RISK what I have as little as it is.

      FB is a great place to go if you want the gov to know everything there is to know about you.
      I don’t use FB, I like my privacy, and if I want to share my life with friends and family, I can send email, text, or call them, and have a conversation, I know that is so old fashion, but it is very up lifting to hear an actual voice…

      I think many people (especially youth) consideer FB as their way to be a “star”. That’s why so many post pictures in the nude or whatever. They want everyone to see and admire them the way they see and admire all the movie stars. I’m not a star and neither are they. I don’t even watch the real “stars”. There isn’t any of them I’d recognize on the street and I don’t care.
