You Built It, They Stole It
UPI
Barack Obama believes government is the answer to our problems.

President Barack Obama has not made a secret of the fact that he believes government is the answer to almost any problem that could arise in a civilized society, even those problems that government has created.

The vague statements about “Hope” and “Change” that Obama made during his first Presidential run quickly made way for a bolder mantra that has evolved over the past three years to the point that each of his speeches nearly indicates dictation from a collectivist handbook.

Obama in 2009 told us that government was the only answer to the economic woes facing our Nation when he said during a speech at George Mason University: “Only government can break the vicious cycles that are crippling our economy — where a lack of spending leads to lost jobs which leads to even less spending.”

At a commencement speech at the University of Michigan in 2010, the President told students: “Government is the police officers who are here protecting us and the service men and women who are defending us abroad. Government is the roads you drove in on and the speed limits that kept you safe. Government is what ensures that mines adhere to safety standards and that oil spills are cleaned up by the companies that caused them. Government is this extraordinary public university — a place that is doing life-saving research, catalyzing economic growth, and graduating students who will change the world around them in ways big and small.”

And in June, on the campaign trail, Obama said that Americans as a whole came to an understanding after World War II that government, not the market, should drive the economy in saying: “Yes, there have been fierce arguments throughout our history between both parties about the exact size and role of government — some honest disagreements. But in the decades after World War II, there was a general consensus that the market couldn’t solve all of our problems on its own.”

The President’s most recent government-is-the answer remarks represent more than rhetoric, they represent a chance to stand back and take a look at the things government has done. This is a time for all Americans to step back and take a look at just who did build this, and who is tearing it apart.

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Let’s examine Obama’s remarks.

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.”

The President isn’t a liar in this respect. No doubt, every successful person has had someone to look up to, a mentor or a source of encouragement. Perhaps someone who, as a young entrepreneur, endured the same struggles you were going through lent a hand or gave you some sound advice. Perhaps a teacher did push you a little harder and expect you to achieve a little more. Maybe your parents helped you get your business off the ground. Or business partners who shared your vision also shared your risk.

Where Obama loses his credibility is in inferring that the benevolence of the Federal government is responsible for the creation of any productive venture, for benevolence and government are mutually exclusive. A government cannot exist unless it is propped up by the productive members of the society it was created to serve. And in a free society, those producers would opt to take a reasonable loss on profits to pay for services that contribute to an environment healthy to business.

Ayn Rand writes in The Virtue of Selfishness:

In a fully free society, taxation—or, to be exact, payment for governmental services—would be voluntary. Since the proper services of a government—the police, the armed forces, the law courts—are demonstrably needed by individual citizens and affect their interests directly, the citizens would (and should) be willing to pay for such services, as they pay for insurance.

This brings us to vet another portion of Obama’s statement.

Somebody invested in roads and bridges.”

Indeed. American producers invested in roads and bridges and continue to do so. Via the taxes they pay each and every day, commuters invest in roads and bridges. Any business that ships products or employs people who commute to work invests daily in roads and bridges. Any commuter who drives through a toll booth invests in roads and bridges. And it is safe to say, without those entrepreneurs who continue to produce, the investment would shrink substantially. Roads and bridges, you see, affect the interests of producers directly and, unlike welfare for the able but entitled class, are necessary for production to result in profit.

Unfortunately, the parasitic nature of government creates an environment in which the stewards of the investment are not held fully accountable for their actions. A 2010 report from the Public Interest Research Group tells how nearly half of the roadways throughout the Nation are in disrepair. Why? Because politicians dependent upon votes to continue receiving taxpayer-funded salaries get more publicity and more special interest kickbacks from new road ribbon cuttings than maintaining existing roadways. Government leads to American motorists’ having to travel a road pitted with potholes just so they can reach a bridge to nowhere.

In order to continue to understand the President’s faulty reasoning, let’s look at his older statements. When he discussed how regulations created by the benevolent government are keeping us all safe at the University of Michigan in 2010, he left a few things out.

Thanks to grants provided by the Federal government to the police who keep you safe, they are increasingly equipped with military-grade equipment that they are poorly trained to use. Many are becoming trigger-happy and careless; every day, news reports detail the frightening consequences.

The regulations that protect miners and other workers from unsafe conditions and the environment from unsafe practices by industry were once a shining example of how an industrialized society could remain both profitable and careful. But Obama neglects to mention how increasingly crippling regulations have eaten profits and created an environment in which running a business is nearly impossible.

The Environmental Protection Agency is doing its best to make American industry uncompetitive with unrealistic standards that only Federal rule makers could dream up.

The agents of the state running the Food and Drug Administration have entwined themselves so deeply with moneyed special interests that it is nearly impossible to discern where the agency ends and Big Agribusiness and Big Pharma begin. They serve these special interests by working to shut the doors of small alternative-health operations, natural-supplement providers and small food growers. Often, their goals are carried out by conducting raids and sending armed bureaucrats, not officers of the law, onto private property to threaten and intimidate small business owners who fail to adhere to insane demands.

The graduates of the public universities that Obama touted in that speech go to school with money received through taxpayer-funded Pell grants. If they are ineligible for the grants because they happen to have been born into a family that acquired wealth through years of hard work, they find a way to fund the education on their own. Their parents pay for it or their own hard work gains them a scholarship. Of course, if those are not options, the benevolent Federal government steps in and offers loans that never go away on terms that sound too good to be true. A slave class is now emerging as a result of the student loan option. Americans owe about $1 trillion in student loan debt, and the cost is growing daily. The figure that is dropping is the number of graduates finding jobs outside of the local burger shack.

And as the value of education drops, the price of a degree rises. The reason for this is simple economics, but you couldn’t learn it in most public university economics classes.

If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

If you are a small-business owner, the truth is you did build your business. Nobody else made it happen. You built your business by jumping through hoops, taking risks, sacrificing family life and fun, losing it all and starting over, and constantly believing that you can be no other than the self-made man who keeps the gears of society in motion. You did this in spite, not because of, the corrupt, parasitic, ever-growing cancer that is the Federal government.

Unfortunately, along the way, you and the producers who came before you also made it possible for the criminals and wealth redistributors who have usurped what was meant to be a government of limited service to build something of their own by the sweat of your brow. They have now managed to create and enable an enormous dependent class; to transition your law enforcement from pro-community to parliamentary force; and to put in place crippling regulations, taxes and fines. And while you weren’t looking because you were building your business, “somebody else” was attaining every last resource they need to steal your profit and tie your hands.

You built it all — your business directly and their criminal empire indirectly — as they stole from and deceived you every step of the way. Now, it seems, it is time to evaluate success and decide which one must be torn down and re-structured from the bottom up. As an entrepreneur or a producer, there is no doubt you can tell which business model has failed.

You raise many interesting issues that needed to be raised. I’ll make a couple of quick comments.

The idea that our infrastructure is a gift from the government is obviously false since the government cannot make a profit and all their funds are taken from the citizens. But a politician who suddenly says he will borrow more money so we can fix out crumbling roads, highways and bridges should be forced to answer this question. What happened to all money from taxes that were supposed to pay for the infrastructure maintenance all along? While Ron Paul’s followers are assuring the audit of the Fed, someone needs to audit the collection and spending of all the State and Federal taxes collected for infrastructure maintenance, and we will likely be very surprised.

Ayn Rand’s idea for voluntarily funding some of the things that are currently supplied by government and paid for by taxes, may also be a major answer to more quickly balancing the Federal budget. First determine the unconstitutional departments of the Federal Government and begin to phase them out. Convert an office like the IRS, to annually collect a proposed budget for each of the former departments that are now independent, and present it to the citizens. Those citizens that wish can contribute to any of those offices. The amount collected by a determined date then funds that now independent department for the following year. In that way those who believe those offices are essential have the opportunity to help them continue their work. This also allows a major reduction in Federal taxes such that a flat tax can be instituted that everyone must pay equally, eliminating the unsustainable current defect that allows people who don’t pay taxes to vote for politicians who buy their votes using other peoples money.

The federal reserve system/fiat currency/national bankruptcy since 1933 that is the root cause of all the nonsense. That is propped up by the income tax, google “taxes for revenue are obsolete” by Beardsley Ruml, author of the withholding system, that temporary wartime measure that has been with us since 1943. In order to make the American worker liable for an income tax on his wages, a critical nexus had to be established. That nexus is participation in Social Security/use of an SSN on the job. SSN use on the job is actually, no $#!+, 100% voluntary and not required to live OR WORK in the US, so saith the Social Security Administration, write them and ask, ssa dot gov. SSN use on the job is enforced by policies within the private sector, policies usually based upon ignorance and fear. Policy is easier to overcome than law, and, in some cases, education will do the trick. A breach in any part of the line is a breach in the line. Enough holes poked thru will cause a breach. If so much as one city educated half of its small businesses to give people an option of dropping out of Social Security, totally legal and within their rights, that alone might cause the movement to spread like wildfire and the socialist applecart would be overturned. By the way, Obamacare ties into all that as well … no SSN use, no Obamacare.

Anyone for a reborn Soviet Union? How about, if Obamanation get reelected, “The Disunited Socialist States of America” or DSSA !?

FIREFIGHT……Great comment. In this country it is unfortunate that people have become so dependent on getting handouts from our government. I am all for helping people who are down-and-out for a period of time. I am all for helping people with disabilities and sick and injured family members, but this country can no longer be a sugar-daddy to everyone who asks for free welfare and free food. The US ( Uncle Sugar ) cannot sustain this philosophy of giving its have-not’s free food at the feeding trough by taking money from those who are and have been earning a living, be it a CEO or like myself an electrician. We cannot support the children who are born to careless and senseless parents, although I should say mothers, as the fathers disappear when a child is conceived.

Here’s something for all to ponder and this IS the truth. Copy it and send it to eveyone you know especially those in those communities where spitting out babies seems to be how they get an increase in income.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

    1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

    2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

    3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

    4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

    5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I have utmost respect for all of you people who have started their own business, wether you succeeded or failed. I salute you. I hope for your sake this POS POTUS gets tossed out of DC come January. He has done untold harm and damage to the US, and to you small business people. Instead of wearing the American flag on his lapel, he should be wearing an arm band with a hammer and sickle on it. ” From each according to his ability, to each according to their needs.” SOUND FAMILIAR?

    • vicki

And remember, NEED does not equal want nor desire. The homeless have all they need or they would not survive to be homeless.

One need only listen to the words and rhetoric od this guy to know that he has only one mindset . Total dominion over America .For the past three and a half years his attacks on the American Government and people have gotten more and more flagrant and outrageous . He would impose government control on every aspect of our lives just as it was in the Soviet Union not all that long ago . Barry Obama is a child of Marxism and Communism . Both of his parents (no matter who you believe to be his father) were devoted Communists . He was and probably still is a card carrying member of the American Communist Party for all anyone knows .His disrespect for America , Americans and the value’s of both knows no bounds and he would give our country away to illegals in his quest to either turn us into his own Communist Empire or destroy what has been the greatest nation in history for 237 years

A rebuttal to the sheer arrogance of this affirmative action president.
I am remiss to admit, I DID NOT REALIZE ALL THE HELP I RECEIVED.
When I started my business, seven days a week was the norm plus making time for the children and other obligations. Midnight oil was a staple in our home. I paid all my own travel expenses, insurances, property taxes , and even made charitable contributions. Additionally, there were payments for ”unemployment insurance which I could not collect if I decided to close or got forced out of business. The risks were huge. Then, there were full bore college tuitions for three children; no help here.

And those highways that you say “helped me” were paid for by federal and state fuel taxes, paid by me and all the folks driving cars & trucks. Add to that tolls which are USE TAXES. Park your car in a parking lot while making a sales, business or service call, more taxes. Go to the movies, baseball or football game, buy hot dog and you pay more taxes. When I traveled for business, communities benefitted from me by collecting sales taxes and taxes on every meal, motel and hotel bill. Don’t forget automobile registration fees and the so called wheel taxes levied by communities especially in the Chicagoland area

You tell me a teacher helped me out (and that would be the same for police and firemen too)….. With all due respect for these folks, they get PAID. The same goes for every municipal, state, and federal employee. and in some cases these folks earn (30%) more than private sector employees. And, they collect nice fat pensions, all paid for by TAXES! So please tell me Mr. President Who is helping who?

Never take money from the US government and never put the pen to a government document (as in treaty). These words (paraphrased), was the guiding principal for the plains native Americans because the US GOVERNMENT never kept their word. 136 years later…. nothing has changed! The Fed is non biased …. they screw everyone all the time.

If government is how businesses are made and there is no factor of “self made” or hard work or personal risk or smarts etc in the equation of building a business – then why doesn’t every citizen have a thriving successful business that the government made happen for them? (sarcastic)

Socialism and government only provision will bring us all to the same level – but it’s not the level ANY of us want to be.

I’ll take the downside risks and the upside rewards directly based on what I did and did not do any day of the week.

One very stupid speach, the govt. did it… Roads and infrastructure Bridges and the like.. … Why does that jungle bunny think the govt built roads. ..Henery Ford an independant on his own, manufactured automobils Etc. Then airports were built to accomodate airplanes that were built by non govt individuals. Then once every thing got under way the govt . saw a chance to get into every one’s life by taxation and intervention by using your money to take control of your very movement, They , the govt is absolutely incapeable of doing anything original. Any great project that the govt. had a hand in was an accumulation of individuals concepts of inventions and need to fill other individuals needs to complete any project. . The moon landing for starters, Which one of those govt toads invented anything that went into that? Especially the likes of thier great leader.

I just read in the newspaper this morning that the lenders of student loans are bundling them into securities just as they did with mortgages a few years back. The student loan dept is over one trillion dollars. You know what happened to mortgage securities. Here we go again.

I am so greatful to Obama for helping me to realize that my government did all of the work that has been done for the past 20 years to make my business so successful while I sat on my goat smelling ass and did nothing. There must be a reason, though, why I have all this gray hair and I’m so tired. Perhaps I can get some clarity about this from one of his government funded doctors under his “Obama gonna take care of me” health program.

I’m just sitting here in total disbelief that this pompus jackass can make such statements and am in more disbelief that any person living in America could listen to his crap and actually believe it. If his own stupid words don’t crucify him, then we definitely have a bunch of Americans that have been dumbded down to the basement. This is what government intervention into our children’s education has come to. What a mess!

yep I have been working 12-18 hour days since 2005 and since 2008 have loss 50% of revenue, due to this idiots policies each and every year of that revenue from the previous year. I am no longer able to borrow any more from my wife’s 401K to keep afloat, she will not get a pay check if I do. No Gubment assistance here, I’m the wrong color for an SBA loan.

When I heard King O’hypocrites’ asinine comment, I thought that he was trying to recapture his ‘certain’ voters (who are decreasing in numbers-appartently, they’re not ALL as dumb as he thought)) by convincing them that the successful are no better than they are just because they work hard and try. Fox News had a more probable reason. After showing Romneys’ response to the kings’ assertions, Fox said that it gives Obamas’ supporters more fodder to label Romney as ‘only for the rich’ and this is, probably, why the comment had been made. This makes TOTAL sense coming from such a manipulative (lawyer trained) sham of a president who is depending on the ignorance of his ‘followers’.

  • ANNE

Obama would not know how to start a business, he doesn’t know what the front a check looks like, he only knows the back, whee he endorses it. Everyone that is a conservative needs to get the message out that Obama is not anyone’s friend, he only thinks in terms of himself, and if necessary he will throw anyone that doesn’t believe him under the bus, and tell the driver to rn over the SOB several times.

  • James Kirksey

President Obama’s comment about the government, rather than individuals, building all of the successful businesses is of course a lie. However, most of our tax money that has been spent was hidden in some half-truth. Our interstate system was build on the pretense of having a way to move mass number of troops to defend our nation. One of Alabama’s past Governors, Jim Folsom Sr,. paved roads all over the state under a plan of having “farm to market road system,” to help agriculture. In my lifetime, I have seen multiple hundreds of tax raising bills that were said to help old folks and school children. Yet, both of these groups are often the most neglected for helpful assistance.

There is nothing new about Obama; he is a composit of what his handlers think will sell to the voters. We know little to nothing about him and likely what we have been told is a lie. Obama is simply pushing the same old political lie which itself is not original with him. But, we must call him on it, as well as his bogus birth, parentage, Muslim faith, citizenship, SSAN, and on and on. James Kirksey

Please remember that there are women business owners too, not just “self-made men”. I run two businesses and help keep the wheels/gears running. I’m getting REALLY tired of working ~12-15 hrs a day just to make it. Rather frustrating when my government assisted tenants get up at noon, have better and more food than me, and get to party all day and night. Whats wrong with this picture?

This is roughly the same message is “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.” Yes, it does take a village or neighborhood or extended family or church. What it does not take is a social services department or the Bureau of Indian Affairs. My village has no social workers.

  • catt

The Food Stamp president failed to mention ,it’s tax paying business that support the government and its agenda’s.
Without an idea, hard work or dream nothing happens, so once again this socialist is sooo out of touch , maybe because he never owned or ran a business , not even Kool -Aid stand.

Speaking of student loans I have my own experience with them. Back in 2000 I had a car accident and fractured my neck. Stress made for much pain and my Dr. told me I had to change my career and so forth, make changes in my lifestyle. I tried to go back to school and work different jobs here and there. After 20 years in the auto leasing business. I had made a comfortable life in the past. I got behind on bills and had to file for bankruptcy. I was ashamed because I was never one to turn my back on my responsibilities and never looked for hand outs, but I was not capable to make ends meet and the bill collectors were building stress and the pain was getting unbareable and I had to quit going to school, start taking pain medication just to try to get back into my past career to get out of this mess. I had only gone two semesters and had racked up $2800 in school loans. BK does not help with school loans so the interest was building daily.

In 2003 the Department of Education contacted me a told me if I would allow them to excuse the interest over the last 24 months and sign a new loan document they would clear all bad debt and clean the slate, of course I said great sure I will do so immediately, please fax me the paper work. I did not even bother to read what I was signing and off we went. I stated getting bills about 3 weeks later for $54.00 per month and I paid $100.00 a month every month until 2007, just before the economy went in the toilet, my wife and I sold our home and were going to move closer into the DFW Metroplex. Our home was out in the country near South Fork Ranch. To my supprise when I pulled my credit, I then owed $3100 on my student loans, even though I had been paying $100 per month for nearly 3 years, I thought it would be close to paid off by now. Come to find out that great rate of 5% they had signed me up on and had released all the interest and negative reports to my credit files was on a monthly interest rate and not an anual percentage rate, worse than pawn shop interest, like a loan shark. I since have not been paying $100 any more, but only the required $54 per month. I now owe $3800 balance. So the $54 dollars does not even lower the priciple and does not even cover the interest 100% each month. I am inslaved to pay the $3800 balance in full at this time to get out from under this obligation or wait and pay off a much higher balance once we get out of this terrible economy or pay this every month for the resty of my life. Yep when I called them back in 2007 to find out what them issue was and found out the loan shark rates, I was shocked and told the barely able to understand women on the otherend of the phone that this is ludacrous, she said well you signed and agreed to these terms. I never in my right mind expected the Department of Education would be charging monthly intaerst such as the IRS charges.

      • Brad

Bill thank you for your insight Jack Off! I did not need you to tell me this. The point I was hoping most would read into this is that our education system and their loans being pushed onto out children are at loan shark rates. If a small business man had enougfh trust in the US Government (niave)not to read the fine print, how many of our childern all doing the same?

Bill, You ARE a Jack Off. Way to miss the point of his story. Now go lick Obumma’s boots some more, idiot.

Applying Obama’s logic to the failure of Solyndra, Evergreen Solar Inc, SpectraWatt, Mountain Plaza Inc.Solar Trust, Willard & Kelsey, etc mkes it clear that the Obama adminstration is responsible for those failures.
The entrepenuers did not have to attempt to build a company, that is not their job.
The government does that building now, and it is the Obama Administration that is making these companies fail one after the other.
What is Obama’s reason for not building these companies but making them deliberately fail?

    Socialism at its best!

Michael, I’m still trying to vote for the right representatives and senators that might be able to bring an end to this mess but construction of the life boat IS under way.

    • AZ-Ike

You’re on the right track, HH. It is far better to vote in new, citizen representatives (and to refresh citizen representation frequently–every term) who will support the Rights of the People, than to re-elect the same corrupt, career incumbent politicians who have aided and abetted an unconstitutional usurper of our highest Office. Concentrating only on electing a new President instead of weeding out Government corruption in all Branches of Government, will only result in more of the same–Tyranny over U.S. ‘subjects’ rather than government by ‘consent of the governed.

I can understand why the first affirmative action POTUS would actually believe what he is saying. After never having held a job where he had to produce anything and having had the way paved for him by yet unknown fuzzy images of the global elites. A fairytale lifestyle floating above the realities that the rest of us deal with every day can not help but produce the whiny, child-like narcissist at the helm of the American Titanic. Best head for the life boats.

    • WTF

here here, well said. a spoiled selfish narcissist whom trying to correct would be like stealing a lollipop from a baby. best we can do is vote him out and bring charges against him after and find out just who he really is.

Well said …. My wife could not believe his idiotic comment. She still has nightmares over home equity loans to build a business and thought I was nuts.

      Obviously he is clueless!
