Miami School Says ‘No’ To Michelle Obama Visit

The first lady is the last person that some Florida school board members want to see. Obama has become well-known for her stops that are intended to educate the young on healthy living and her husband’s politics.
But conservative school board members are asking that Barbara Goleman Senior High in Miami close its doors to Obama. Reneir Diaz de la Portilla is a school board member who is also running for State House as a Republican. Another board member, Carlos Curbelo, has worked as a Republican strategist.
“Allowing the first lady of the United States to use one of our schools explicitly to benefit the president’s reelection campaign is inappropriate and sends the wrong message to our students, employees, and to taxpayers — even if the president’s campaign is willing to pay for all costs resulting from the event,” said Curbelo. “There’s a difference between official visits to schools by elected leaders and events that are for the sole purpose of advancing the interests of a political campaign.”
Some don’t see what the fuss is all about. School is out for summer, so the kids don’t have to attend.
Essentially, the Obama campaign is renting the facility.
“I could not be more proud that first lady Michelle Obama has chosen to speak at Barbara Goleman Senior High School, and believe that our schools should encourage students to debate ideas and become engaged in our democratic process,” said board member Wilbert Holloway.
