Clinton promised that “NAFTA would create 200,000 American jobs in the first two years of its effect” and “a million jobs in the first five years of its impact.” Of course, this did not happen.

For residents of Michigan, the impacts of the NAFTA was devastating. As corporations moved jobs outside of the United States to maximize profits by paying lower wages and to escape regulations, the economy in Michigan suffered. According to the Economic Policy Institute, all fifty states experienced significant job loss due to NAFTA, although Michigan was among the hardest hit states. The Economic Policy Institute has determined that Michigan alone lost over 63,000 jobs due to NAFTA.

While explaining that “jobs moving to Mexico” was the result of NAFTA is commonplace in Michigan and around the United States, less examined is the role of Bill Clinton in passing NAFTA.

NAFTA was negotiated and signed under the Bush administration, but was ratified in Congress in 1993 following an aggressive push by Bill Clinton who made NAFTA a major legislative priority.

Clinton aggressively promoted NAFTA as part of his agenda despite public opposition of 2-to-1 against the trade agreement. Clinton joined the rest of his administration and corporate lobbyists in a “full-court press” for votes on NAFTA, making it a “do or die” vote.

In order to secure the votes for its passage, Clinton aggressively lobbied Republicans and offered money for pork projects in exchange for votes, while organizing a series of ineffective “side agreements” that were designed to counteract opposition from the labor and environmental movements.

The ratification of NAFTA and its subsequent results fit within a larger foreign policy goal of the Clinton administration of advancing United States interests, summarized by Clinton’s Treasury Secretary who stated that “I’m tired of a level playing field…We should tilt the playing field for U.S. businesses.”

Moreover, NAFTA helped to advance the interests of the global ruling class, with NAFTA making a significant amount of money for the ruling elite in government and the private sector.

NAFTA was pushed with the support of the media system, despite the fact that much of the public was opposed to the deal.

But Clinton would continue passing similar trade deals throughout his administration, with the Clinton/Republican alliance pushing through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and China’s being granted PNTR.

However, while the effects of NAFTA on workers in Canada, Mexico, and the United States as well as who the likely benefactors would be received attention in the alternative press at the time, the full story on NAFTA has still been largely ignored by the corporate media.

The effect on jobs in the United States, mentioned previously, has been significant.

The United States government has certified that more than 525,000 jobs were specifically lost to NAFTA as companies took advantage of provisions in NAFTA making it easier and more profitable to relocate to Mexico.

Corporations based in the United States have also used the threat of moving to Mexico as a way of weakening unions and union organizing drives.

Many of the workers who have been displaced by NAFTA have found significantly lower paying jobs in the service industry, which offers pay of twenty-three to seventy-seven percent less and few or no benefits.

According to Public Citizen, “NAFTA has aggravated the problem of deindustrialization and helped perpetuate the stagnation of real wages for millions of hard-working Americans and their families.”

In Mexico, over 1.5 million farmers have lost their farm-based livelihoods due to the flood of United States corn, while wages in the manufacturing sector fell from an average of $5 per day to $4 per day. Prices paid to corn farmers, once the backbone of Mexico’s agricultural sector, have fallen by 70%.

As a result, half of the Mexican work force works on less than $8 per day. Furthermore, a third of the 800,000 jobs created in Mexico by NAFTA–many in the low-wage maquiladora sector–have left Mexico and relocated to Asia. Thousands of Mexicans have been displaced from their homes due to changes in the agricultural sector, and have relocated to the border region where they live in poor conditions and work low-wage jobs.

NAFTA also has effects on national sovereignty and democracy.

Rights and protections within NAFTA gave preferential treatment to foreign investors. In many cases, this treatment exceeds what is available under domestic law, with NAFTA provisions allowing corporations located within any of the three countries to sue the other countries over regulations–including health, zoning, or environmental regulations–that impede a corporation’s ability to make profit.

This has happened, with Canada reversing its ban on a gasoline additive called MMT, which destroys catalytic converters, and is a suspected neurotoxin, after U.S. Ethyl Corporation filed a NAFTA Chapter 11 case for $201 million alleging the public health policy violated its NAFTA rights.

In Mexico, the government was required to pay U.S.-based Metalclad Corporation $16 million in compensation after a Chapter 11 claim that the denial of a municipal construction permit for a toxic waste facility in an environmentally sensitive zone near the city of Guadalcazar violated its NAFTA rights. Moreover, these cases are filed in secret under NAFTA’s Chapter 11 rules, making oversight next to impossible.

So you see, nc, what we are dealing with, is a US Government that has been hijacked by a self-serving, permanent political class, which considers itself above the law.

Having become comfortable with ignoring the will of the people, American politicians have created a culture of corruption in Washington, D.C., while they steadily whittle away at the Constitution to remove any remaining obstacles in their pursuit of personal power and affluence.

There’s nothing wrong as long as the work is age appropriate. Farming can be dangerous and children need the proper training to remain safe. I’ve heard more than one proud parent brag, “my son can drive the tractor and he’s only five”. And I think to myself, wow you’re an idiot.

It’s rather obvious that you are a city person and have no idea as to what it is like to grow up on a farm. Every member of the family pitches in. That is what keeps the farm going. Be it a vegetable or dairy farm. Where I grew up we were a community and helped each other with the planting and the harvest. If a cow got out and was wandering in the fields eating the crop we would lead it back to the barn. And bye the bye it is not uncommon to see a four or five year old driving the Farmhall or the John Deere down the rows pulling the trailer and helping load the boxes of celery, lettuce, cabbages or whatever manner of vegetable being harvested. Farming is a family affair and business. Unfortunately there are some that do not realise that. City slickers should recognise that for without them they would in all probability starve to death. Obummer should take his children to a farm for a real education instead of a luxury trip to Iberia (Spain if you wish.) and no Christmases in Hawaii at the taxpayers expense either.

Sarg, I agree with you 1000% on the subject of who helps out on the Family farm. Oh, by the way, thanks for your service. I didn’t grow up on one but I did spent quite a few of my formative years working on one during the summer. I did everything from irregating crops (both setting siphen tubes and sprinkler pipes) to topping corn, weeding crops, milking cows, branding and making steers out of bulls, feeding livestock and other chores around the place. I learned early on to watch the more experienced workers and to ask questions. That is the work ethic that I took with me into the Army where I advanced to the rank of SSG (E6)(Cav Scout Section Sergeant) and then later on in the Air Guard where I retired as a TSgt (E6).

Our kids today need get up off their butts and learn some work ethics by getting a job any job during the summer break and stop being a slave to the Government.

Well Kershaw you may be wrong. I live about 5 miles out of the booming metropolis of Patrick, SC, population 400 and have a small farm (107 acres). I wasn’t raised on a farm I chose to start one and luckily I have many great neighbors who give me advice.
I do have at least a hundred pounds of wild game in the freezer and do can a lot of food so I won’t be starving now or later because i can always harvest some more.

Karolyn, I have to tell you that it ain’t so! I live in the agricultural heart of the nation…Fresno, CA…in the San Juaquin Valley and that just isn’t true at all. I like to drive through the various agricultural areas and have never witnessed rotting crops. Dry soil and dead fruit trees, yes, but that is the result of environmental extremism(bait fish over water) and not for a lack of field labor. If you have read any stories or articles that have said that, I can honestly say they would have been perpetrated by either the environmentalists or pro amnesty advocates. That just isn’t the case at all.

I think you would find these maim and kill more kids every year than farm work. But maybe I’m just stupid and can’t be fixed.

Karen, relative to the number of participants in the activities you mention, farmwork is by far the most dangerous. I’m not against kids doing chores but it needs to be age appropriate. Before working with or around farm equipment there needs to be instruction, training and warnings learned to prevent injuries/ fatalities from occurring.
When’s the last time you worked on a farm? For me, it was this morning.

Their aim is to break family farm tradition and prevent future generations from attaining the know-how to grow food and raise livestock. SSC, there is nothing wrong about working on a farm, oh, yes its dangerous but if you keep your eyes and ears open you’ll learn what is and is not. I was picking fruit (Cherries) and topping corn when I was 10. Driving a tractor at 13 while the adults were bucking hay. Oh, I also learned how to drive a truck (an 18-wheeler) when I was 15, my job was to drive it from the field loaded with culls (bad potatoes or corn) to the feed lot where it was used to feed the livestock. Oh, I even buck my share of hay when I got old enough to lift a bail (80 to 90 lbs each) while riding on a sled pulled by a tractor driven by a teenager.

So, SSC, I and others like me enjoyed working and learning what it takes to run a farm.

Obama is going to be handed something in excess of $2 Trillion — and he has made it perfectly clear that he will spend every penny of it before the November 2012 election. That’s why he kept saying, ” . . . so we don’t have to do this again”, meaning raise the debt ceiling again. The debt ceiling would only need to be raised if all of the money had been spent. Therefore, he has stated very clearly that he will spend every penny of any debt ceiling increase. He is going to burn through $2 Trillion-plus in the next sixteen months. This was the Obama regime’s plan from day one. Geithner
appeared before Congress in early May and told them this in no uncertain terms. This outcome has been a known quantity all along. There are no spending cuts in this plan. It is all accounting fraud. Saying that you are not going to spend money in Afghanistan ten years from now is not spending cuts. Even if you accept the $1 Trillion in cuts over ten years propaganda, that is only $100 Billion per year, which is essentially meaningless relative to the size of the problem. Furthermore, even a miniscule uptick in interest rates, which given the massive debasement of our currency is now a mathematical certainty, will completely consume that $100 Billion per year. It’s all a joke. Back to the $2 Trillion that Obama is being handed. I honestly think that most people in this country have no understanding of simple counting numbers. Do you not understand how much a trillion is? Where do you think this money is going to come from — who has two trillion dollars to loan us? China? Nope. Not even close. China’s entire GDP is only $6 Trillion. Do you honestly think that China is going to loan us one third of their total annual economic production? China was a huge creditor to us back when $100 Billion was considered a staggeringly large amount of money – which was four years ago. Now $100 Billion is literally a rounding error. Do you realize that there are only a handful of nations of this planet that even have a GDP
in excess of $2 Trillion? If these countries loaned us every penny of their GDP, it wouldn’t even be $2 Trillion:

India ($1.54 T)
Russia ($1.46 T)

Obama is going to embezzle considerably more than the entire economic output of Canada, India or Russia to his cronies before the 2012 election — and that is just counting this round of spending. This doesn’t include the other $5 Trillion he has already burned through since 2009. China is not going to lend us this money because they simply don’t have anything close to that much money to lend. This $2 Trillion is going to come from the Federal Reserve. Where is the Federal Reserve going to get $2 Trillion? They are going to print it out of thin air. We are in the midst of the largest currency debasement ever seen in human history. There is only one result that can come of currency debasement: hyperinflation and total economic and societal collapse. Have you also forgotten the so-called “Bush tax cuts”? Yeah. Those rates are going to expire on January 1, 2013. Obama will presumably still be occupying the Oval Office at that time assuming that he is not forcibly removed or that the Republic is still intact at that time. Taxes will increase significantly at that point, and the Congressional Budget Office has scored everything put before them given the fact of the massive tax increases on 1/1/2013. Do you understand that? When these Republicans and even these so-called “Tea Party Freshmen” tell you that there are no tax hikes in their “plan,” they are consciously, willfully, knowingly lying to you through their teeth.
Finally, I do not understand how it can possibly be that conservative
writers are still addressing Obama as if he is actually trying to help the
economy, but his well-intentioned policies are failing. Obama is the enemy. Obama is a Marxist-Communist usurper and puppet front for a cabal of Marxist-Communists who are actively trying to destroy the United States of America. Everything they have done, are doing, and will do has the single goal of collapsing and destroying the U.S. economy, military, constitutional government and culture. What part of “Marxist Revolution” do you not understand? The Obama regime is not a failure. The Obama regime is not incompetent. I think you reversed your results of O’Dumbo vs Bush on the Dow averages. If you care to notice, the lowest in Bush’s term was 7,286.27 around October of 2002. His highest was 14,164.53 around September & October of 2007 & fluctuated above 11,200 until October of 2008. O’Dumbo’s lowest was 6,347.05 around March of 2009 & stayed below 11,000 until around May of 2010 & has been a roller coaster since. So the Bush low wasn’t as low as O’Dumbo’s & O’Dumbo’s has never been as high as Bush’s high! Yes, it’s up to 13,000 right now but I’m sure he’ll create a crisis to screw that up like he does everything else!

It is if you totally disregard the fact that approximately 33,000 children were injured in farm related accidents EACH YEAR according the DELTA FARM EXPRESS as far back as 2000! Also according to the report approximately 100 children were KILLED EACH YEAR!
Do you have a figure in mind of how many children must be killed or injured before some one attempts to offer a solution.And should we just ignore it because the founding fathers didn’t mention tractors in the constitution?

nc. your statistics are sobering. My question: what kind of injuries are we talking about? Minor or major? How about how many children fall out of bed and get hurt or get hurt or killed in auto accidents? Shouldn’t we make laws saying that a child should not be allowed to travel in automobiles until they reach the age of 18? Only one hundred child deaths a year attributed to farm accidents? All deaths are tragic but this seems trivial compared to child deaths caused by other causes.

If it is more than one hundred per year does that mean that we should ban children from living in the cities? Maybe this ridiculous idea is even better: that we should ban children altogether because we just can’t guarantee their safety?

If our children, or in MY case grands and great grands, are indoctrinated and taught to accept what the Government demands, given goods and money they don’t EARN, it makes them DO MUCH EASIER TO CONTROL! If this “rubber crutch” gets another four years, he WILL have us prepared for a life of slavery like NKorea, Iran, China, etc.! You know why we love farming? Because we got our hands dirty. There supposedly is a bacterium or something that exists in the dirt that enters the body and stimulates certain feelings of satisfaction and pleasure. Too many people today don’t get their hands dirty and have no “feeling” for what it means to be a farmer. Too many of them feel that food comes from grocery stores. They have no idea what a farm is or why someone would want to teach their children to love the land. Thankfully there are enough people who do get their hands dirty so that they want to go on producing food for people that have no appreciation for what they eat.
