Why hasn’t a boycott of the offending airline (Southwest) been called for. The TSA goons (10 Hours detention) won’t listen to the public because it is to much fun watching the rabbits (the public) squirm. However, if you hit he enablers (airlines) where it hurts them the most – their pocketbook – The amount of reasonableness on the TSA’s part will be commensurate to the degree of pain exerted by the boycott of the airline.

I smell a big ass LAW SUITE. If it were my wife or daughtes I would be on the phone with my Lawyers and start the process to Sue the airline the flight attendents and the law enforcemant agency that detained her. No if’s and or but’s about it.

Time for a little lawsuit against the airline and against the stewardess. It wouldn’t hurt to throw a lawsuit against the law enforcement agency for illegal detention.

FYI… Nail polish is inflamable, and has an offensive odor, as well. Perhaps some would not mind smelling it, but others who may have lung problems would find it intolorable. Confinment in an aircraft cabin should preclude any obnoxious activity by others.

we had people going berserk and killing 20 people at a time while we have people subject to the third degree for painting the nails on a plane.

I was setting outside a court room for hours one day, waiting for my shot at “Your Honor”, to tell him my story while he pretend to care . Being the restless kind and hating to waste minutes, I got out my pocket knife and made busy cleaning up a working man hands.

It took maybe 15 minute for the SWAT team to arrive.

I think most people commenting here are missing the point, The woman was detained because the airline complained to the authorities that she was an “unruly passenger”. She was detained appropriately when seen in that light. I would say she was wrong for calling the flight attendant a name, since that is stooping to the flight attendant’s level of incompetance. However we feel about painting nails in an enclosed space, if no one around her had complained then the flight attendant was out of line and if she was on my aircraft I would have dressed her down (I am a corporate Captain).

In this economy I would think that it is a stupid move for any airline to alienate even one customer. I think that whichever airline that caused this woman to be detained for 10 hours is no longer on her list of airlines she will use in the future. I am certain that if the flight attendant had said to the woman that she was offending other passengers and would she please stop that the woman would have done so, and no harm done. In any case, a letter to the CEO of the airline detailing why she would never again be their customer would be in order. I will tell a story of my experience.

I was traveling from Saudi Arabia to Denver on vacation back in 1991 and found myself in Atlanta with about a 4 hour layover. I made my way to the gate for my connection and was pleased to see a pub located directly across. Saudi Arabia is a dry country. So I decided to enjoy some beer while I waited. When I noticed that the gate was open for checking in I gathered my belongings and proceeded to stand in line. When I got to the head of the line before I could even open my mouth I was asked to step aside, which I did. At no time was I disagreeable or beligerant, since I was happy and going home. A senior agent appeared and told me I was being denied boarding because I was “intoxicated”, and I would be placed on a later flight. I did note that the flight I was on was full. I tried to protest by telling the agent I was an Airline Transport Pilot, and as such I was quite familiar with the rules he was using. Also that I was a “medallion” level frequent flier and had ridden a bus from Charles De Gaule to Orly to fly his airline because of my loyalty. Imagine my surprise when suddenly there was a police officer standing next to me telling me that if I didn’t be quiet I would be taken to jail. I was escorted to another gate where I was put on a flight by way of Salt Lake City departing in 2 hours, causing me to be another 3 hours enroute. My thought was that if I was too “intoxicated” to fly on the first flight, I was certainly not sober enough in two hours to get on the second. When I got home I sat down and composed a polite but stern letter to the CEO of the airline with my complaint. I received a letter back saying that they were sorry for my experience but “tuffawallajellybean”… This was in 1991, and I have not flown on that airline since. They missed out on the revenue from me and my family for about 7 years while I was in Abu Dhabi, all first class travel. I still tell the story, and as a pilot I’m sure I am given more credibility than others, so from that one incident the airline’s reputation has suffered for 21 years. Not that they care.

The customer used to always be right, and in a sense we still are, since there is still competition in this country and we can vote with our feet.

Personally, I hate the smell of fingernail paint. It is the same as car paint. It stinks. She should have had the courtsey to paint her nails either in the airport while waiting or at baggage claim.

Daniels was arrested for being loud and abusive not “for painting her nails”. One witness testified against her. No one came to her defense. Charges were dropped after 10 hours.

I wonder what happened in those 10 hours.

Until you are the one victimized by stupidity, you believe anything can be done to anyone else to standardize everyone’s acceptance we don’t know what’s good for us. It is too bad others on the plane didn’t protest the attendant’s over reaction & they be arrested to create more the absuridity. Will coughing or sneezing be the next thing on the “DON’T DO” list? Does no one have any common sense ?

Let’s take a step back here. I’m in full agreement that the TSA is the worst thing ever invented, but have you ever been close to someone painting their nails? The fumes are overwhelming! I get a headache instantly. To do it in an enclosed space like an airplane is not only rude, but stupid. It’s about the same as smoking on an airplane. You can’t keep the smell to yourself, so it’s not acceptable. Spreading a toxic, flammable, stinky substance on a plane is not going to win you any cool points with me. I’m sure the situation could have been handled better, and 10 hours in detention is surely excessive, but let’s have a little common courtesy when we are packed like sardines on these miserable flights, shall we?

This is what got her detained as an unruly passenger. It was clear the attendant was overstepping her bounds by harassing a passenger telling her not to paint her nails even in the bathroom (there’s worse smells in there anyway, right?) and then continuing to reprimand even after the passenger returned to her seat. The passenger should have simply stated that she would be filing a formal complaint against the attendant for unnecessary harassment, and than telling the attendant to shut up and using profanity on a plane full of people and children.

I am sorry to disagree with most comments on this site regarding this passenger’s detainment and the authority exercised by the flight crew/TSA. People, it doesn’t matter if she asked fellow seatmates if they minded, nail polish fumes spread further than a single row. Have you ever openned a door to a nail saloon? I’ve been on flights and experienced terrible odors from carry-on/first class food, smokers who exhaled their last puff before boarding, dirty diapers, etc. We’ve all endured these horrow stories!
This is one of those times when common sense and courtesy should have prevailed.
The passenger deserved to be detained; I would have been happy to know this if I paid airfare to travel with some hopes of comfort, not sitting in a beauty or nail salon. If she made my trip uncomfortable I’d applauded the flight attendent’s stance before I deplaned!
Really, when and where do folks think their own personal interest supercedes the good of all? And, how happy would the other passengers have been if the captain would have been asked to mediate? He has the rightful authority to choose to land and ground the plane based on his determination of the situation. Bet there would have been many unhappy business passengers then!
Go figure, lady get a life and do your nails in private before or after you land. Just like personal cellphone conversations, some things do not need to occur in public places!

I think the point has been missed here, she did the right thing and asked the people around her and got an ok. At that point the attandant became the Gestapo and after that went over the line. The TSA AND Thr Patriot Act deffantly need to be abolished and yes GW did put it in to place no arguiment but we are to blame for it, all of us not just right or left or middle but all as we let him and all the politicians do it. We have to take the blame for everything that is happining now as all of us for the past 150 years have allowed them to do what they want. We have given them the power over us and we have to go back and start at the beginning to the Constitution and take back our country. This country was built on the principals in the Constitution and if you don’t like those principals you are welcome to find any other country that has a different one. but the only thing that makes this country diffrent from all the others is the Constitution of The United States and the Bill of Rights. The way to stop all the harrasment by the TSA is easy, DON’T USE THEIR SERVICE. This country is run on the monitary system, now I know you will say but I have to fly for my business I say BS. My business is coast to coast and border to border and I have not been on a plane since 1995 so it is possable but most are just lazy and wont do what is necessary and that is what is wrong with this whole mess lazyness or selfishness. I say get off your dead ass and do something about it, and not just lip service we get enough of that from them. I AM. If you don’t have a clue what to do or where to start than look at NULIFICATION it is on the move and you can make it work in your neighborhood. It maybe the last chance to stop a civil war in this country and what is giong on in SYRIA is childs play as to how it will go here. It will take this country 100 s of years to recover if ever you might bone up on your Arabic.

OK, I have smelled some nail polishes. They can contain acetone, and various “aromatic hydrocarbons” that can be TOXIC. This may not have been handled well, but painting nails SHOULD be at least frowned on, out in the seating area. I hope the bathrooms are ventilated enough that nail-painting can SAFELY be done there. And yes, if the woman really DID ask all her seatmates, and got agreement, then let her do it THERE. Let’s at least TRY to THINK LOGICALLY and RATIONALLY. AND ABOLISH the TSA!… Yes, the TSA is most certainly a TEXAS / Bush Dynasty CREATION. As was “9/11″. YES.

I was not there to smell the polish, but I know that when my wife does her nails, it stinks to high heaven. It should have been handled in a civil manner, and there should not have been a detainment, but I can see how it could disturb ones sniffer.

While 10 hours of containment is wrong, I am fairly certain that the flight attendant did not think that the woman would be detained for the amount of time.

On the other hand, over 15 years I tried to polish my nails on the plane. The flight attendant told me I could not do that because the air is recycled and it may bother some passengers. So, what did I do-I put it away. Shouldn’t we really be grooming ourselves elsewhere?

Maybe the stew should have been detained for 10 hours. Does anyone remember the scene from Airplane II where the terrorists where waltzing through security with rocket launchers, bombs and machine guns – while an elderly lady was told to “spread em” and place both hands on the wall to be searched? A hilarious scene that is not quite as funny now, since it is literally playing out before our eyes. Let’s see, who gave us the TSA (and the insane fuel prices that are crushing the airlines – and stressing out their employees)? Yes, indeed, it was King George II – the same socialist that gave us NCLB.

A mere 10 hours, eh? Offhand, I’d say that some airline employees are indeed acting like tightly-wrapped, anal retentive TSA monkees. It sounds as though asking “mere” passengers isn’t good enough to satisfy someone who assumes that he or she can play the role of an instant dictator and almost get away with it.
So, is it possible that the employee in question is on Obummer’s short list to become the next ‘transportation’ czar? It seems to fit, folks.
