If You Are Using The Internet, You Are A Criminal

Remember the controversy over the past couple of months surrounding the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) that was seemingly quelled by the protest of thousands of Internet users and the subsequent blackout of several major websites? Though the tweets, posts and online news stories regarding Internet freedom have waned greatly, the threat to freedom and any level of online privacy persists.
Perhaps it is a product of our always-on news cycle or our constant bombardment with entertainment distractions, but Americans as a whole have a very short attention span when it comes to fighting against threats to our liberty. When lawmakers such as Representative Lamar Smith (R-Texas) — author of SOPA — draft legislation that deliberately takes away Americans’ freedom and privacy, they do so with a plan.
Smith and his legislative cohorts knew very well that SOPA and PIPA, two bills that screamed censorship and the antithesis of American values, would make American Internet users and free-speech advocates uneasy; that’s why the Texas legislator drafted a backup bill. The bill’s alphabet-soup acronym is PCFIPA (H.R. 1981), which stands for something that all Americans would likely support “Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers.” By amending existing laws that give U.S. Marshals the power to issue subpoenas and pursue fugitives, the bill will give Federal authorities access to your every move when using the Internet or Internet-based device. That’s every email, click, text message, password, online financial transaction, etc.
Internet service providers (ISPs) already keep track of some information, but Smith’s bill requires the ISP to retain every move of every individual using the Internet for 18 months, according to IT World. This means that the Feds would have an ever-evolving pool of data pertaining to every Internet-using American to bait with the thousands of Federal laws and regulations on the books and fish until they find some semblance of criminal activity.
Smith — like any good bureaucrat — is using child pornography as a straw man to impose tyranny. By assuming that every American is a child pornographer, the bill compiles a list of every online action and makes every person guilty until proven innocent.
IT World says of the bill: “Since it is empowering U.S. Marshals to investigate people who have not yet been convicted, under PCFIPA, the only thing required to get a valid subpoena to examine all the online activity of 99.762 percent of the U.S. population, is an investigating officer willing to say the subpoena has something to do with investigation of online child porn.”
“The bill is mislabeled,” Representative John Conyers (D-MI) told CNET. “This is not protecting children from Internet pornography. It’s creating a database for everybody in this country for a lot of other purposes.”
SOPA, PIPA and PCFIPA are all pretty nasty attempts by the U.S. government to unleash its crushing regulatory power on the Internet, but there is another threat to internet freedom and privacy. Critics of the international Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) say the agreement has all of the markers of an evil plot in a movie based on a group of world leaders and corporate interests bent on eliminating communication among their proles to control all production, communication and information. ACTA is supposed to be an international agreement that protects copyright holders against piracy by establishing an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet. The law would use an international organization — such as the World Trade Organization, World Intellectual Property Organization or the United Nations — to carry out its task.
ACTA has not been widely discussed in U.S. media, likely because negotiations regarding the measure were held in secret. It was signed quietly by the United States in October 2011 without the approval of Congress, the Supreme Court or the American public. Tokyo, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea also signed the treaty, while the European Union, Mexico and Switzerland plan to do so in the near future, according to International Business Times. When the measure is finalized, ACTA can be used to crack down on Internet activity worldwide by a coordinated authority that rests outside of any country.
Governments aren’t the only ones who want access to everything you do online. With the advent of a new Google privacy policy on March 1, information from almost all of your Google services — including Gmail, Picasa, YouTube and search — will be compiled and analyzed so that the company can learn more about you. Google collects and can integrate just about anything you’ve ever told the company: calendar appointments, location data, search preferences, contacts, personal habits based on Gmail chatter, device information and search queries among other things. There is no way to opt out of the company’s tracking aside from not using any of its products.
If you’re concerned about Internet freedom and privacy, don’t worry, President Barack Obama has your back — much like he did when it came to the indefinite detention provision in the National Defense Authorization Act. Last week, the Administration issued a “Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights” and said that individuals should be allowed to opt out of corporate Internet tracking. No word yet on whether the White House will call for the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, CIA, U.S. Marshals or international spy agencies to allow Internet users to opt out of tracking by Big Brother anytime soon. Our guess is likely not.
You can opt-out at any time. We protect your information like a mother hen. We will not sell or rent your email address to anyone for any reason.

Obviously, when someone dares to monitor people 24/7, they have to assume that their equipment is infallible (and they can manufacture “reality”). So, our wannabe masters aren’t above using capricious methods of selective enforcement of ‘law’ statutes. I’ve been around that mindset before, Sam.

It will certainly give people something to ponder when living is so dangerous that many of them will walk away from their ‘duties’ to find gainful employment at another, safer job. That includes media whores, too. Tingling Leg Syndrome will take on an entirely new dimension, eh?
Not to worry about us all being criminals there will be plenty of interment camps ready for us to take up residence. Does Obummer think he is or will be or is King or what?
What surprises me the most is the reaction or lack there of from the left…censors, investigating everything they do online, should send the left into a tissy fit.
It is not, because its there man in the white house, there party, there reps passing these draconian measures. Not that the right is not guilty, both are being manipulated by the real powers that be, it just seems the left is so blind to it.

A free-flowing, uncensored, hands-off internet, is one of the biggest threats to big-government, why with all that freedom of speech and all. From a power-hungry, government’s position; control of the internet, is a logical and necessary requirement. As for the lame reason; “protecting children from porn”, nonsense! The industry provides ample soft-ware to nip the pernicious, porn-bug, among other influences, in the bud! Needless to say, opposition to this bill will be considerable. On the other hand, this threat/proposal, could also be for the purpose of distraction, while something else is maneuvered in place. Time will tell…
@FreedomFighter obviously you don’t really follow what happens on the internet or “lefty” politics, because if you did you’d understand that SOPA and it’s corresponding bill PIPA (did you know there was a corresponding bill? Probably not) were bipartisan bills. Bi partisan means supported by both parties. You also might want to note that they were defeated because of intense pressure by sites like the Communist DailyKos and the Socialist Reddit well over a month ago.

Sadly, this is nothing new. It is only an extension of the Privacy Improvement Act, sponsored by Clinton and passed by the Democrats.
That act forced all communication manufactorers to install chips that allows the government to record and copy every telephone call, email, fax, etc. that you send. They can then search it for specific flags such as “bomb” by computer. If a flag is located, they can then have a real person listen to or read the message. Of course the words to search for can be changed at will.
All this act does is give them the right to place charges against you for reasons other than national security.

I use POPVOX.COM to contact my reps about legislation. I just sent them one about this thing too. I actually got a call from one of my reps a few days ago about another bill that was going through. Lucky for them I was in public and didn’t want to tell them what I really think. I wonder if they will call me back and give me a second chance to tell them how I really feel? o_O
2012 is surely starting to be like 1984. If we do not stand up and oppose all this the book will be true. It makes me shudder to think that would come come true. We need to shout out and do everything we can do to stop all this Big Brotherism!!!
I use the internet alot, and do a lot of research on the wars our nation has been engaged in. that goes from world war 1 to the present ones. There is no excuse for any one of them. The government uses propaganda to stampede people into war. If that don’t work they then bring out the military draft, and you are going fella,whether you support it or not. War itself is the biggest promoter of socialism and big brother government. In time of war, free speach and thought are cortailed. War is a racket only to benifit the international bankers who promote it. Does that make me a criminal for using the internet and comming to my own conclusions on our wars past and present? Sigfried Sasson a British Army Officer of ww1 said “In war time patriotism is the supression of the truth.” Sasson knew what he was talking about. Think about that one! The Rockefellers and the Rothschilds love war and it benifits them and the governments who ingage in it, but not the ones who lose. They have to pay for it.

Every byte of information you put on your computer, the govt. knows about it. Every cell phone call you make and twitter messages , the govt. knows about it. Every drivers license has a computer chip and every credit card has a computer chip in it. That way they know where you are at all times and what purchases you make. Every time you write a personal check.the govt. knows about it. The govt has all your health and finincal records. The govt has surveillance camers everywhere you go.Every home is bugged with a reverse michrophone. There is nothing you do that the govt. doesnt know about you. The said part about it is that we pay them to do it. The worst part about is that we let them get away with it.
Libertarians,such as myself, have been saying for years, “the Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance” and even here in “Personal Liberty”, some “rednecks”, have said, because I am Canadian I have no right to criticize with their immature expletives ( which I ignore of course because FREEDOM is not owned by Americans, especially NOW)…
……well we are now paying the price for asking that freedom be taken from some to benefit the few, every time Americans invade another country or find a reason to hate another group. The Person ( or Government) who can steal FOR you CAN and will steal FROM you.

Interesting post, thanks, and scary. I think we would be better off without the internet. We think it will cure our social disfunction, that it is somehow making us into communities again. But really we are just moving further and further away from where we should be.
