Will Iran Be Attacked?

Washington has made tremendous preparations for a military assault on Iran. There is speculation that Washington has called off its two longest running wars — Iraq and Afghanistan — in order to deploy forces against Iran. Two of Washington’s fleets have been assigned to the Persian Gulf along with NATO warships. Missiles have been spread among Washington’s oil emirate and Middle Eastern puppet states. U.S. troops have been deployed in Israel and Kuwait.

Washington has presented Israel a gift from the hard-pressed American taxpayers of an expensive missile defense system, money spent for Israel when millions of unassisted Americans have lost their homes. As no one expects Iran to attack Israel (except in retaliation for an Israeli attack on Iran), the purpose of the missile defense system is to protect Israel from an Iranian response to Israeli aggression against Iran.

Juan Cole has posted on his blog a map showing 44 U.S. military bases surrounding Iran.

In addition to the massive military preparations, there is the propaganda war against Iran that has been ongoing since 1979 when Washington’s puppet, the Shah of Iran, was overthrown by the Iranian revolution. Iran is surrounded, but Washington and Israeli propaganda portray Iran as a threatening aggressor nation. In fact, the aggressors are the Washington and Tel Aviv governments that constantly threaten Iran with military attack.

Neocon warmongers, such as David Goldman, compare the Iranian president to Adolf Hitler and declare that only war can stop him.

Washington’s top military officials have created the impression that an act of Israeli aggression against Iran is a done deal. On Feb. 2, The Washington Post reported that Pentagon chief Leon Panetta believes that Israel is likely to attack Iran in two to four months.

Also on Feb. 2, Gareth Porter reported that Gen. Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, informed the Israeli government that the United States would not join Israel’s aggression against Iran unless Washington had given prior approval for the attack.

Porter interprets Dempsey’s warning as a strong move by President Barack Obama to deter an attack that would involve Washington in a regional conflagration with Iran. A different way to read Dempsey’s warning is that Obama wants to hold off on attacking Iran until polls show him losing the Presidential election. It has generally been the case that the patriotic electorate does not turn out a President who is at war.

On Feb. 5, Obama canceled Dempsey’s warning to Israel when Obama declared that he was in “lockstep” with the Israeli government. Obama is in lockstep with Israel despite the fact that Obama told NBC that “we don’t see any evidence that they [Iran] have those intentions [attacks on the US] or capabilities.” By being in lockstep with Israel and simultaneously calling for a “diplomatic solution,” Obama appeased both the Israel lobby and Democratic peace groups, thus upping his vote.

This spring is a prime time for attacking Iran, because there is a good chance that Russia will be in turmoil because of its March election. The Russian opposition to Putin is financed by Washington and encouraged by Washington’s statements, especially those of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Whether Putin wins or there is an indecisive result and a run-off election, Washington’s money will put tens of thousands of Russians into the streets, just as Washington’s money created the “Green Revolution” in Iran to protest the presidential elections there.

On Feb. 4, the former left-wing British newspaper The Guardian reported a pre-election protest by 120,000 anti-Putin demonstrators marching in Moscow and demanding “fair elections.” In other words, Washington already has its minions declaring that a win by Putin in March can signify only a stolen election. The problem for Obama is that this spring is too early to tell whether his re-election is threatened by a Republican candidate. Going to war prematurely, especially if the result is a stiff rise in oil prices, is not an aid to re-election.

The willingness of people around the world to be Washington’s puppets instead of loyal citizens of their own countries is why the West has been able to dominate the world during the modern era. There seems to be an infinite supply of foreign leaders who prefer Washington’s money and favor to loyalty to their own countries’ interests.

As Karl Marx said, money turns everything into a commodity that can be bought and sold. All other values are defeated: honor, integrity, truth, justice, loyalty, even blood kin. Nothing remains but filthy lucre. Money certainly turned U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair into a political commodity.

The power of money was brought home to me many years ago. My Ph.D. dissertation chairman found himself in the Administration of Richard Nixon as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security affairs. He asked if I would go to Vietnam to administer the aid programs. I was flattered that he thought I had the strength of character to stand up to the corruption that usually defeats the purpose of aid programs, but I declined the assignment.

The conversation was one I will never forget. Warren Nutter was an intelligent person of integrity. He thought that regardless of whether the war was necessary, we had been led into it by deception. He thought democracy could not live with deception, and he objected to government officials who were not honest with the American people. Nutter’s position was that a democratic government had to rely on persuasion, not on trickery. Otherwise, the outcomes were not democratic.

As Nutter saw it, we were in a war, and we had involved the South Vietnamese. Therefore, we had obligations to them. If we proved to be feckless, the consequence would be to undermine commitments we had made to other countries in our effort to contain the Soviet Empire. The Soviet Union, unlike the “terrorist threat,” had the potential of being a real threat. People who have come of age after the collapse of the Soviet Union don’t understand the Cold War era.

In the course of the conversation, I asked how Washington got so many other governments to do its bidding. He answered, “Money.”

I asked, “You mean foreign aid?”

He said, “No, bags of money. We buy the leaders.”

He didn’t approve of it, but there was nothing he could do about it.

Purchasing the leadership of their enemies or of potential threats was the Roman way. Timothy H. Parsons in his book The Rule of Empires describes the Romans as “deft practitioners of soft power.” Rome preferred to rule the conquered and the potentially hostile through “semiautonomous client kings which the Senate euphemistically termed ‘friends of the Roman people.’ Romans helped cooperative monarchs remain in power with direct payments of coins and material goods. Acceptance of these subsidies signified that an ally deferred to imperial authority, and the Romans interpreted any defiance of their will as an overt revolt. They also intervened freely in local succession disputes to replace unsuitable clients.”

This is the way Washington rules. Washington’s way of ruling other countries is why there is no “Egyptian Spring,” but a military dictatorship as a replacement for Washington’s discarded puppet Hosni Mubarak, and why European puppet states are fighting Washington’s wars of hegemony in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia.

Washington’s National Endowment for Democracy funds non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. It is through the operations of NGOs that Washington added the former Soviet Republic of Georgia to Washington’s empire, along with the Baltic States, and Eastern European countries.

Because of the hostility of many Russians to their Soviet past, Russia is vulnerable to Washington’s machinations.

As long as the dollar rules, Washington’s power will rule.

As Rome debased its silver denarius into lead, Rome’s power to purchase compliance faded away. If “Helicopter Ben” Bernanke inflates away the purchasing power of the dollar, Washington’s power will melt away also.

      No doubt Israel will hit Iran’s nuclear production facilities. No doubt they already have via computer hacking and taking out the electrical grid on a constant basis. And no doubt the ‘accidents” and assassinations of key scientists is connected. If anyone doubts the US and NATO manuvering in the Syrian issue is partly because it completes the noose around Iran they’re in need of correction. Why do you think the terrorist connections have now all come out against Assad…as Assad is going under, Iran is losing the ally, and it knows it had best do something to salvage what it can or it will be only a matter of time. So on the one hand it supports Assad, on the other it tries to place the rqdicals in a position where any post-Assad regime has influential allies in places of power.

      It’s a high stakes chess game being played…and we are darned lucky and fortunate we have Pres. Obama and Sec of State Clinton on our side. So far, a masterful job…masterful.

    I’ve been saying for over a year that if the polls show Obama losing that is when we will go to war with Iran since like this article said, not standing president ever lost an election when a war was going on.

    I am not a fan of Iran and their constant threats to their neighboring countries and even to the U.S. should be addessed but not so Obama could be re-elected but for their bully tactics.

    Clearly Iran is the hostile actor in the region and has openly and repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel.
    The best defense is a Great offense and the US must support Israel against the Iranian hatred with money, weapons and as an ally in war if that is what it takes.

      Israel can defend itself, and if they want to attack others they should shoulder the responsibility for it. Isn’t it time for Israel to grow up and grow some balls? They have to start taking the responsibility for their actions and politics and stop waiting for handouts from the US government and stop expecting the US citizens to sent their sons and daughters to die for a cause that is NOT our cause. Israel acts the perpetual victim and is without honor, acting just like the lowest welfare recipient in the US, hands stretched out for our tax dollars and support.

    Why does this country feel the need to always start wars? Israel says they are worried and want to attack Iran so we prepare for war? Because Iran may create a nuclear weapon that they don’t have any intention of using any more than North Korea has. I think the policies and actions of this government have run so far amouck that most US citizens would wander; who is this government? There is no need to start a war with Iran. Have they threatened us? No. I suspect that these wars are a cover for our personel civil rights being taken away from us and given to the 1 percent who want world control. World domination at the cost of the planet.

    Who the heck is this guy? I have never read so much misinformation in one column before! The US has put troops in Kuwait? Yes they have as they are using Kuwait as a staging area for troops leaving Iraq on their way home.

    The US was in a war and involved Vietnam? The North Vietnamese had run the French out of South Vietnam (starting at the end of WWII) and attacked the south with open and secret attacks for years before our involvement, which started with President Eisenhower! Was that yesterday?

    Iran has no intention of attacking Israel? He had to have been asleep for the last five years to have missed the Iranian leaders promising the destruction of Israel and bragging that their new long range rockets could reach the U.S.

    He appears to be an apologist for the world and inclined to disregard verbal attacks on our country by people who have declared themselves to be our enemies.
    I see no help for him and suggest that his column be headed “Humor”.

    Washington is supporting Israel? Good. At the expense of poor little Americans whose overpriced homes were virtually paid for by American taxpayers through stupid liberal programs to make certain all of the underachievers had big expensive homes which they could never pay for? No, they did not deserve big expensive homes just because they were not as smart or hardworking as others, so the rest of us were expected to buy their homes and feed their spawn, and pay for their healthcare. There are no “poor” in this country–only those less successful, and they are all doing very well at taxpayer expense–they are rich compared to people all over the world. Israel is our only friend in mus land, and well deserves our support.

      Maybe you haven’t seen the latest news on the real estate rip off. The government is expecting up to 1 million forclosures to be owned by the government in addition to the 250,000 it already owns. Want to buy a home on the cheap? Well unless you are a billionaire or own a hedge fund – tough luck. They will be selling in bulk with the first reports being a minimum block size of one billion dollars to funds and investors who will rent them out and slowly disburse them (at a profit of course) in order to get them off the market quickly.

      Who ever said the rich pay their fair share to the government doesn’t realize all the programs in place to “help the poor” that are really sops to the rich.

    There is little doubt that much of what is said by Israeli and American sources on Iran is misinformation, a repetition of the Dodgy Dossier and the Weapons of Mass Destruction lies that led to the Iraq War in 2003. Iran poses a singular problem to Israel and America, a problem which is not related to the strength of explosive charges. The Islamic Republic of Iran never attacked any other country. Unlike America, they do not base their wealth on the Business of War. THE EIGHTEENTH LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD BY PURCHASING POWER PARITY (PPP) IS BASED ON MINING, MANUFACTURING, AND AGRICULTURE, WITH 45% OF THE IRANIAN GOVERNMENT’S BUDGET COMING FROM OIL AND NATURAL GAS REVENUES. IN ORDER TO KEEP ITS PROFITABLE OIL BUSINESS GOING, IRAN NEEDS PEACE. Thus, it is unlikely to attack any other country in the future. Yet, American and Israeli journalists keep claiming otherwise in increasingly hysterical tones. Needless to say, THESE TWO ECONOMIES ARE BASED ALMOST SOLELY ON THE BUSINESS OF WAR.

    Interesting as it is, there is more to Western hatred toward Iran than its being a perfect enemy. The moral rhetoric of Iran is what scares the pagan West, not its weapons. If the Western electorate awakens from its long coma and understands the West is still basing itself on the pillage of others, revolution would follow. The fall of the Western countries may take place after their citizens realize their governments are still responsible for worldwide evil. 500 years later, the Conquistadores are still here, their metal helmets having been replaced by hedge funds in the City. Hysterical to delay the end of this pleasant empire, Western media obscures the role of morals (they reduce it to sexual morals, and then dismiss the topic). When was the last time you heard a Westerner official truly assessing “goodness?” American officials talk about the “financing of the war,” as a relevant parameter in the consideration of their next rape of humanity. That’s evil. Unknown to most Westerners, Iranians are invariably concerned about good and evil; this is addressed on official policy papers. They have their own and legitimate view on the topic, in sharp contrast to the pragmatic, golden calf-oriented West. Thus, the Iranian political discourse cannot be accepted by Washington and Tel Aviv. That discourse may melt their golden calf. So, what are a few honest lies, if they lead to a shiny golden calf in Zurich’s underground vaults? AFTER HAVING CLARIFYING THAT, LET’S GO TO WAR.

      But how do we know that when 90% of the information we get is biased and filtered? Unless you know several different languages and are willing to read news papers from different parts of the world, watch TV stations from all around the world (yes they are available to everyone with an internet connection and a ROKU box) you will NEVER know the truth. If you don’t do that, you are just acting according to the information and propaganda that you are spoon feed by people with an agenda.

    The old saying that” everything, anything and anyone can be bought, it’s just a matter of determining the price ” may be true in many cases, but there are those whose integrity and self respect do not yield or submit. Pity we are unble to find those qualities among the ( elected? )leaders of this world. The question remains – do these people possess any moral fibre or are they so overawed by their ill gotten power, that they are now totally beyond redemption and completely useless. “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do!” Ring a bell anywhere? Anyone? What is to be done? when? where and how?, in order to rectify the mess? Time to find out may be just around the corner and maybe, just maybe, there is’nt an answer.

    Hokayyyyy … yet Iran’s leadership has made it a point to state publically on an almost daily chant the destruction of Israel is their desires.

    Iran is indisputably etermined to refine fuel for a nuke, and become the first ME Arab cuntry to have nuclear capability. Looking at the other Islamic power with a nuke, Pakistan, such a thought sure gives one warm fuzzy feelings of safety does it not?

    Today’s series of comments will be very interesting uin that as Iran’s daily rant against Israel, the far Right and the TPers have engaged in a daily chant of Obama appeasing Iran and doing nothing to prevent its progress towards nuclear capability.

    Even of more interest, For being accused of doing nothing, Obama has managed to place the noose around Iran to encourage its cessation of building nuclear weapons.

    The author’s surmising that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were being crought to a close because it releases troops for military action against Iran is laughable. From the first days of his campaign for the Presidency, Obama has stated one of the main goals of his administration was to end those wars, bring home the troops, and reduce the costs we are shouldering. That and the numbers we have on the ground there are not those which cause an eyebrow as to what they are to be used for. Any invasion or attack on the ground against Iran will take far more than the troops we have there.

    Let’s see…the economy is showing signs of strong gain, unemployment is dropping, farcical lies and made up claims are falling on deaf ears, polls show President Obama wiping the floor with any of the GOP contenders, ….all that’s left for the Right and fanatic Obama-haters is to conjure up a “Wag the Dog” scenario and that dog don’t bite.

    Obama has done a darn good job in prepatory planning, setting up for any foreseeable scenario, manuevering us into a strong position and boxing in those who declare themselves our enemies. In other words, making sure we are prepared and safe.

    And now he’s being faulted for this.

    Wy is the Far Right so determined to be anti American to the point of calling for America to be weakened economically, socially, and in foreign affairs?

You do not become president or any position of real power without their say so. We made our bed with Iran in the 1950′s with CIA Operation Ajax were we actively undermined the country’s internal election. We do business with anybody as long as they go by our rules. People in positions of power dont speak up until they leave power…and most of them go to the right..where they can make even more money. I speak of the Generals who leave the Pentagon and head straight to the biggest weapons manufacturers with their “wish list”, if that isnt insider trading, and taking advantage of the american people for personal opportunities, what is. There should be a ban on Generals retiring and going to weapons manufacturers for a period of at least 5 years.

And then those who are silenced; so many are afraid to speak out. What about the people who used to work for Area 51 who have been talking about what really happened there? Those examples you just mentioned are covered by Federal firearm laws that are already on the books…to continue to burden law abiding citizen with additional laws does nothing to stop the criminals who, by e way, are criminals because they don’t follow the law.

        The Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibits certain people from possessing a firearm. The possession of any firearm by one of these “prohibited persons” is a felony offense. It is also a felony for any person, including a registered Federal Firearms Licensee to sell or otherwise transfer any firearm to a person knowing or having “reasonable cause” to believe that the person receiving the firearm is prohibited from firearm possession. There are nine categories of persons prohibited from possessing firearms under the Gun Control Act:

        •Fugitives from justice;

The criminals get their weapons on the black market and through theft of homes. In your world the criminals would still have guns and the rest of us would be defenseless.         1. I have made multiple purchases through the internet and am required to have my local FFL dealer send a copy of his valid license to whomever I make a purchase from. Once the gun arrives, I have to fill out my DROS(Dealer Record Of Sale) background check paperwork which is submitted to the DOJ for approval. The DROS form completed for handgun transfers contains information about both the firearm buyer and the firearm itself (make, model, serial number, etc.). This information is used by the Department of Justice to run the criminal and mental history background check on the buyer and to register the handgun. Handgun registrations are actually done and maintained by the Department of Justice, but local law enforcement agencies have access to them 24 hours a day. I still have to wait (Calif-10days)for approval before I can take ownership of the gun. If a buyer’s background check isn’t approved, he will not be allowed to take possession of the firearm…period. Oh, and you’re out the money you spent too.
        Internet firearm dealers, by law, will not directly ship to an individual unless that individual or his representative has a “valid” FFL license that can be easily verified through the “FFL eZ Check”, a system that was designed to allow a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) who has a copy of another FFL’s license to verify or authenticate the license PRIOR TO shipping or disposing of a firearm(s) to the requesting licensee. The web site will verify the information shown on the license to determine if it is still valid.

        As for the rest of your comment, we’ve had multiple discussions and have provided the proof necessary to refute them as justwhat hey are, rhetoric and anti-gun talking points.

        There is nothing about internet sales that makes them done without background checks unless there is already a way to make such a sale already without checks. Some states allow private party sales to members of the same state without a background check. That would be the only way it could be done. Any other internet sale such as from an out of state source requires that the gun be delivered to a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder. They are required to do the federal background check. No FFL holder will risk his license and livelyhood by sending a gun directly to you. In California, every sale must go through a dealer and do the background check.

        The government has learned that it needs to be crafty to take our guns away. They have been trying to pass (and the foolish NRA has supported) a national concealed carry law. All you have to do is take a government approved class and register and you can concealed carry in multiple states without qualifying in each. The problem is, then the government has the names of most of the gun owners, especially those who know how to use them. Once you have the list of gun owners, it is easy to take away the guns. This is exactly how they did it in Nazi germany. (1.register guns, 2.take away guns, 3.take away anything they want including your life).

        There are 2 things that must be done for tyrrany to prevail. They must take away guns and free speech. I’ve discussed the guns. SOPA and the fairness doctrine were to take away the free speech. Luckily some people are waking up. Hopefully more wake up before all of our freedoms are stolen.

        There are at least 3 things I see wrong, Jeff, with the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, H.R. 822:
        1) Number 1, it is Unconstitutional. The Federal Government has no Power under the Constitution to dictate Gun Laws to the States. If we want to preserve the separation of powers, we can’t allow exceptions here and there just because we favor one agenda or another.
        2) “It forces Vermont and Arizona residents (who do not need a permit to carry) to either obtain an out-of-state permit or to push their state to pass a more restrictive concealed carry law than it now enjoys”.
        3) It asserts the Governments discretion over the 2nd Amendment, which it DOES NOT have. Legally, we all have the right to carry concealed because the 2nd Amendment says we do. The Second Amendment does not qualify HOW we may carry our arms, just that we have that right.

        I Believe H.R. 822 is just a Trojan Horse, much like ChristyK worries it is.

        Today, 49 states have laws permitting concealed carry, in some circumstances. Forty states, accounting for two-thirds of the U.S. population, have right-to-carry laws. Thirty-six of those have “shall issue” permit laws (including Alaska and Arizona, which also allow carrying without a permit), two have fairly administered “discretionary issue” permit laws, and Vermont (along with Alaska and Arizona) allows carrying without a permit. (Eight states have restrictive discretionary issue laws.)

I was willing to give Obama credit and was even starting to like him a little when he said he wouldn’t sign the NDAA and then he signed it anyway. What really scares me is I believe he will get 4 more years because the repub party can’t get their act together. They have put forth 2 liars, one with very serious ethics issues and add santorum who seriously scares the bejeezus out of me. The only one that I can even relate too is critisized by the media and the repub party constantly because he doesn’t fit their mold.         I do not write with the same style as Flashman, I’ve never thought that I should but I have often wondered what it would take to find the limits and depth of the absurdity so often presented here.         Offering some restriction to some firearm sales does not make you anti-gun but a thoughtful and mindful citizen.         Opal, Sorry, doing some research there have been many proposals to drop the 22nd admendment – all of them in committe and never made to the floor. In 2007 Jose Serano propossed dropping the 22nd and then again in 2009.

        BigBadJohn As I said it takes much more than a proposal or bill in congress to overturn the 22nd amendment. It would take an amendment to the constitution ratified by the states to overturn it. That is not an easy or quick process.

        Did you see the picture of Oboma bowing to the King of Saudi and kissing his hand? That one gesture means that Obama stated publicly that the US concedes to the rule of Saudi Arabia. That sickens me more than I can put into words. Why is the senate letting him stay in the White House ? It is insane.       I think that I really just didn’t care for the tone of your article Mr. Roberts! What have we to be sorry for?!! Rebuilding Europe after WWII?!! I will admit that some of our policies have been somewhat less than righteous in the fact that we’ve kept some brutal dictators in power as long as they served our greedy self-righteous purposes, made deals with governments to the detriment of it’s people again for nothing more than unbridled capitalism!!!
