Should We Try To Kill Castro?

Newt Gingrich is the self-proclaimed candidate of “grandiose ideas.” One of the most grandiose is his proposal that U.S. taxpayers spend untold trillions of dollars to establish a permanent base on the moon. Oh, and not only put a base there, but someday have it join our union as the 51st State.

Yes, that one is a lulu. But at least it’s relatively harmless, since there’s not a chance it will actually happen in our lifetime. Some of Gingrich’s other schemes aren’t nearly as benign. One that really worries me is his proposal that the United States government use any means necessary overt or covert to topple the Castro regime, because I suspect he would have the support of a majority of his countrymen for such a quest.

I yield to no one in my desire to see that unhappy nation, just 90 miles from our shores, overthrow the communist regime that has enslaved it for more than 50 years. Some of you may recall that my family was in Cuba when Fidel Castro and his bearded ones marched into Havana on Jan. 1, 1959. The experience turned me into a lifelong anti-communist. It led my mother to write a book about her experiences; I wrote a column about her last year that included a link to her story. Click here if you’d like to read her book.

I am still a passionate anti-communist. I believe that the heart of man yearns to be free, but I don’t believe it is our government’s job to decide which rulers deserve to stay in office and which ones should be overthrown. And neither should you, if you believe that this country is (or should be) a Constitutional Republic.

We have meddled in the affairs of other countries far too much and for far too long. We have troops stationed in more countries than you can name. I can’t recite them all, either, because the exact number and locations are a State secret. But it’s a bunch.

More than 60 years after the end of World War II, we still have tens of thousands of troops and dozens of bases in Germany and Japan. Why? The Korean “police action” ended more than 50 years ago, but we still have enough troops and bases in South Korea to fight it all over again. Again, why? Does anyone believe that all these forces are keeping our country safer or making attacks on us less likely?

Of course I would like to see Cuba become free. It would be wonderful if the Cuban people could experience the incredible prosperity that freedom and free enterprise would produce. It is amazing what free people will do when they are allowed to keep the fruits of their labors, instead of suffering under the poverty and rationing of an all-powerful state.

Nothing is more destructive of peace or prosperity than the Marxist version of government that tries to enforce its vision of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” I could even argue that the right to own property and to dispose of it as you wish is even more important than the right to vote.

But with all of that said, is it our job to determine which governments are “good enough” to remain in power and which ones deserve to be toppled? If we start to make such a list, I suspect that more than half of the governments around the world would get a failing grade. Many of them have committed some truly heinous crimes against their people. But is it our job to bring them to justice or to set their people free?

This is an incredibly slippery slope that Gingrich would take America down. We’ve tried it many times before, from an aborted invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs to overthrowing the Shah in Iran and President Ngo Dinh Diem of SouthVietnam. All of those experiments in nation building and many more I could name ended in utter disaster not just for us, but also for the hapless citizens of those countries.

If it’s not our job to “free Cuba” or any other country, what should we do?

We should set an example that other countries could honor and emulate. By that, I mean we should mind our own business and not interfere with theirs. That’s the policy that made us the hope, the inspiration and the envy of the world. It worked for more than 100 years. It will work again now.

If we really want to help some countries, let’s send them copies of our Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, The Federalist Papers and a bunch of other books that could teach and inspire them. What a great project for some private patriotic charities to undertake.

Let’s send them our ideas, but not our interference. Let’s lead by example, not by arms or coercion.

Let’s once again follow a policy of non-intervention in the affairs of other nations. And let’s leave it to others to see some of those “presidents for life” get the justice they deserve.

Is there any candidate out there who feels the same way I do about this? Yes. His name is Ron Paul. And seeing the growing numbers of his supporters (including an enormous number of enthusiastic and dedicated young people) is one of the most encouraging things I’ve seen in many years.

Not only do I think Gingrich is wrong, but I think his ideas of nation building are downright dangerous. I don’t want to see him become anyone’s policeman or nanny.

    Yes, I think it IS our job as American citizens to make that determination and act upon it. Starting with our own government. Once we have taken care of that gang of crooks, we could retire from that business. ;)

    While I agree in principle, I shudder to think about what would’ve happened to the great United States of America if our friend and ally, France, wouldn’t have helped and supported American Independence from the clutches of the British crown. At the same time, if plausible and creditable evidence existed that Castro had anything to do with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, I would have no problem with Castro being removed.

        boatman99 You just described Obama to a tee newt is a good man but with faults, but who in this world is perfect. what we need is a strong military force that the world will respect as they did before. we have bases in Germany and Japan because they do not have a military to protect them. that was the main reason we actually stopped the war and kept the forces there so no one else would attack them. we are their protectors. those that hate us are the ones we need to keep a strong military force that is what they respect.they do not respect a coward like Obama who just wants to bring this country down.he “Obama” has already said that he is the dictator of the U.S.A. we have to get rid of him and hopefully before he brings in martial law just before the election in Nov.

I agree with your premise and given the availability of cwertain technologies,there is no need for a troop presense in any of these countries that were mentioned and those that were not mentioned… We have recently observed the new phenomonon known as the Arab spring and the subsequent fall of one oppressive government after another only to be replaced by another oppressive regime… We need a lean efficient fighting force supported by an informed vigilant civilian population in order to prevent the deterioration of our liberties…. Gingrich is an Idea man and not all of them are bad… If we had supported those yearning for freedom in Iran less than 20 years ago we would not be facing the prospect of a nuclear Iran… If we had followed through in 1960 Cuba would be free of communism… If we had followed trhough in Korea there would not have Kim Jung Il ….

      If we had not overthrown a democratic elected president in Iran in 1959 we wouldnt have to deal with this either. If we had not supported the corrupt government of Mubarak in Egypt for so many years we would not be seing the take over of Egypt by extremist. You have to go back in history a little bit more to get to the root of the problem.

That shows his ability to work with congress and to get things done. He’s run a conservative think tank for years, as well. When the bush rich man tax bill was being considered by a Republican controlled Congress,the conservative Heritage Foundation advised Congress that the tax cut bill would lead to a surplus in excess of our national debt in 10 years. HOW GOOD WAS THAT ADVICE?????????

        Toad, I agree that’s it’s hard to concentrate on clearing the swamp when you’re up to your a$$ in alligators. Something needs to change with our Congress! They need to see the problems and change themselves to get at the solutions or they need a ballot box adjustment.
        I voted for Obama. When it comes time for me to vote again and the ONLY other choice is Romney why would I change my vote to go back to “more bush”? 69 million other Americans will have to make that same decision.

        Joe, that’s the great thing about this country! You’re allowed to vote your heart! But I’m afraid that out problems are solved with the head and not the heart. As much as Dr. Paul has some good ideas and a love of his country he will not be making the big decisions.

        If you want to support a party thats’ history has been to seek a market place where the working mans’ potential is controled by what the boss man wants to pay him and under the boss mans’ terms then vote Republican. Do you really want 4 more years of trickle down?

        If the boss mans’ aim is to get the best price for his “product” why should those who aren’t boss men not have the same aim of getting the best price for their “product”, their labor? Just asking!!

If you don’t like what the boss pays you, you can always go elsewhere or talk to him about a raise. done it many times myself. As i once told a foreman of mine, I came here looking for a job and I can leave the very same way!!! I’ve never been afraid to start over at another place. Guess that’s why I havent’t had too much of a problem with employers, they figured it out.

    Newt did not say he would spend tax payer monies to fund space idea he said he would try to get the private sector to get involved…On Cuba we should mind our business but keep a close watch…Bases in Germany/Japan and other friendly places should be at minimum…But on the idea of staying here and minding our business that is scary with countries in the middle east and thier migration to South America needs to be a priority. I don’t know about you all but I sure don’t want a War Here in the USA!     Yeah newtster, how did that work when we overthrew the Iranian gov’t back when jimmy carter was king. We overthrew a democratic gov’t and installed a dictator, Imagine that. Now we want to overthrow the dictators and install a democratic gov’t. Vote for ron paul people, he is the only one who is gonna keep us out of these haliburton and weapon manufacturers wars. Wars are all about money now. It doesn’t matter how many of our children die, it’s how much the war mongers make.       The difference w/ Iran was, as you said, Jimmy Carter. The only reason the captured people were rescued was two people. First, Ross Perot got his EDS people out with a private mission. Then the very fact that Reagan was elected caused Iran to voluntarily release the rest.

      That may be true Didi but everyone was released through threats and constant negotiations not war. Is it better for those held hostage to sacrifice for the USA without losing their lives or would it be better to wage a 10 year war which would cost the lives of hundreds to many thousands? Such as in Afghanistan and Iraq. We won in that standoff with Iran not so much with our war in Iraq.

    If we go in and kill a leader of another country (no matter how evil) then other country’s should be able to return the favor. What makes us so special that we should be the only ones with the authority to do such a thing. We need to learn to mind our own business and take care of ourselves within our own boundary, but still be able to protect our ourselves and our borders. We should not play God and decide who should live and who should die simply because we do not agree with their ways.

    Personally, I don’t have any problem with taking the Castros out. Oh, wait, it isn’t 1962 anymore is it. That was when we should have done it if we were going to do it at all.

    As for the moon, we should have a colony there. That is something that we would gain from. Yes, it would take a lot of money to get there, but we can learn so much that would affect our day to day lives that it would be worth it. Just look at all of the things we learned in getting to the money. We just can’t expect to get there overnight and we can’t expect all the dividends to be produced at once.

      Being Conservative means respecting other peoples’ rights to control their own bodies and property — as the majority of our Founders did.
      That means NOT hiring Government as your proxies to force other people to spend their money in ways of which they don’t approve.
      I’m all for space travel — done by private companies using voluntary investors’ money.

      Maybe Cubans are satisfied with their lives Alfredo for they do have some very good health care. The only ones pushing their “plight” is the Miami community and politicians who grandstand to get into office. Cuba is only a small pimple on Americas butt and shouldn’t even be that. A bigger worry is our debt to communist China.

        I say, leave the task to the cubans, its their country after all and they should decide where they waant to steer it. I mean through the end of the 20th century many latin countries fought their independence from dictators and is what we call a civil war and each country should fight it on their own. How would we like it if another country interfers in our internal affairs? Let the Cubans take on arms and fight this 50 year old regime, The egyptians did it, Bahrain, Lybia, Syria is in the process, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Chile etc, etc etc.

    As far as the current impotent blustering goes, What is Newt proposing? A covert operation to plant an explosive devise on Castro’s Hover-round? How daring… no covert operator would touch such a cowardly ploy, nor should it be considered.

Last time we saw something similar was the Renaissance.

        No, colonization of our Solar System is NOT a pie in the sky objective – rather, I believe we’ll find a LOT of ‘pie’ in our ‘skies’ once we start the push off-world.

        Infinity is a tough concept to get your mind around when confined to one celestial body where finite is the rule, but the natural resources to be had from near by Earth objects and beyond is truly infinite.

        Present day efforts to understand, catologue and protect us from sustaining impacts from near Earth objects (NEO’s) could someday morph into the control and mining of these objects for their mineral wealth if the private sector is allowed to proceed unabated. An asteroid round-up so to speak, corralled in stable Earth orbits.
        But if Capitalism is quashed, it will likely never happen.

    Why not realize that every candidate has at least one kookoid idea that makes his/her candidacy stand out from the rest? It could be that it’s an established political rule.
    It could be proof that no political candidate is so

    Whatever it is, it’s almost enough to wish that we didn’t need ANY politician. We added about 300,000 jobs in Jan,and continued the steady job growth of the past 2 yrs. I wonder if you guys will have anything good to say about this good news?         The numbers are never the whole story,but they do give us a guide for how things are going,improving or not. Even when we were in the boom there were many people underemployed and many who fell out of the employment market entirely. We know there are always more umemployed then what the number statse because some people give up looking or aren’t willing to move for a job that may exist in another region. But the fact remains that we’ve had positive job growth for a couple of yrs now,and that can only be good news.

        It’s always possible to be negative about the economy and the country,but if all the detractors would spend a little energy pushing the positive rather than preaching doom and gloom,we would already be in a much healthier position. I’ve said for many yrs,and it is proven true repeatedly,that modern capitalism cannot provide full employment w/ decent wages unless we are engaged in an all out war,like we were in WW2. All the evidence says that,and yet the Right wants us to believe that we can provide good paying jobs and full employment if we just dismantle gov’t and do away w/ regulations that hinder the economy. The problem w/ their argument is that it’s patently false w/ no modern evidence to support it at all.

        Engaging in an all-out WWII-style war, as you suggest, will not bring about full employment, unless you count the millions of soldiers who are no longer in the workforce as employed.

        And yes, full employment is possible if the government will step aside and allow the free market to operate. It has happened before, and it can happen again. But Bush/Obama stimulus and war spending and Greenspan/Bernanke Fed policies won’t get us there.

        We can’t have full employment w/ good paying jobs w/o a big war or the post war boom that can occur. We never have had it and never will. Sure,if we strip all regulations,including labor laws and any sort of min wage we may do it,but what kind of society would that be? People working for $2/hr,no healthcare,opening all public land to coal mining,oil drilling,giving the national forests over to logging companies,allowing our water to become utterly toxic,air too thick w/ pollution to breathe,rivers flowing w/ toxic waste…what a great country we would have! And still,the vast majority of workers would be working at slave wages,unable to buy what they produce. We’ve tried your prescription before…the 1800′s and early part of the 1900′s before we had much of any regulation and no environmental or labor laws. We are still behind the numbers of employed at the height of the bubble,but we’re regaing ground and,afterall,that was a bubble,which is defined by it’s abnormal growth. We don’t easily or quickly recover those employment numbers w/o inducing another bubble somehow. We don’t have a bubble economy going on now so how can we have bubble like employment numbers? We can’t.

        Unemployment is created by Government Meddling. Without the Government Meddling, the Pricing Mechanisms of the marketplace would take over and produce the fairest distribution of wages and product prices that there could be. Wages would go down, but anybody who wanted to work could find work. And Productivity would go up, enabling those lower-paid people to buy more with their smaller paychecks. On top of that, the People would be able to pocket all those Trillions of dollars that are now going to pay the Meddlesome Government Gang.
        It’s all about Productivity. What causes people to work most efficiently, and produce the most? That cause certainly ISN’T having Negatively Productive Government People paying themselves with Taxpayer Money.

        Let me explain a little to those who are, like Denniso, economically ignorant, but unlike Denniso, would like to learn.
        If the net output of goods or services (after adjustment for costs of necessary capital equipment) of a worker is $8/hr, no company owner who wants to make a profit on his invested money (we all do) will pay that worker $8/hr or more, with the exception (maybe) of a charitable organization. But the company would hire the worker for about $7/hr. So, if we let Government set the Minimum Wage (there should be none) at $8/hr or more, all those people capable of producing only $8/hr of goods or services must either go into business for themselves or do without. And thanks to Big Government it’s not very easy for most people to go into business for themselves (Licensure requirements, other Government hoops).
        And many (if not most) of those regulatory hoops have been established by Politicians and Bureaucrats purposely to protect their compatriots. Licensing boards are invariably staffed by people who are already in that industry and thus have a bias towards protecting their own jobs as well as those of their buddies.

        It does take some ability to reason and some actual work when it comes to weeding out info bias among all the sources out there,so don’t feel too badly about being unable to do it.         Since we staked claim on the moon first I don’t think any other nation would try and annex it for themselves. The moon would be like Antarctica were conditions are harsh and few would even want to live there. Antarctica is divided into different zones where no one can really own that piece of land. When it comes to the moon or any other planet the expense would kill almost any project. The billions in cost to retrieve any minerals and ship them back would be a daunting task for any country. Not sure how many workers would want to work in uncomfortable space suits for months or years at a time either. After 60 years of attempting to conquer space and numerous sci-fi movies we haven’t got much out of it. Except for the big exception of communication satellites. We should never stop searching but I think it’s time to reevaluate.

        FF, it doesn’t matter what resources we have here in America. None of them are going to make Mars spin faster or give us life-spans adequate to reach planets beyond our solar system.

        Presently, data shows that Mars is the only potentially habitable planet in the solar system in terms of temperature and hospitable weather conditions (relative to some of the turbulent planets and moons that have volcanic eruptions that blast miles into space). Unfortunately, Mars doesn’t have a life-sustaining atmosphere, and despite the zealous ideas of planting a bunch of trees to generate one, Mars doesn’t spin fast enough to retain the full potential of its atmosphere. Neither does it spin fast enough to generate an adequate magnetic field to protect us from the sun.

        The moon is being constantly pelted with meteors and such. Just look at it. There is no atmosphere to deflect such things as there is on Earth. It also has reduced gravity, which means that anyone living on it would end up suffering problems with bone density. And this is saying nothing of the difficulties with providing an adequate amount of oxygen to sustain a population.

        That only leaves a sub-zero Titan, and I think either their air or their water are speculated to be something nasty, like methane or amonia.

        Beyond that, we have planets around other stars, which we can’t reach. When they talk about the nearest one being forty-something light years away, you have to take that into account with the theory of relativity. One year at the speed of light, they say, and a baby left behind on Earth would be an old man when you got back. Experiments have demonstrated that “time” does in fact slow down when particles reach near the speed of light.

        So it would take forty lifetimes to reach the nearest star. By the time our astronauts reached their destination, the world will have forgotten that they ever went.

        Expanding to space is a stupid waste of money.

        I’ll give it one plus, and just this one. One day our sun will expand beyond the boudaries of our orbit and increase its gravitational strength. When that happens, the Earth will be gone. If there is any hope that the human race will survive, it is necessary that we must one day flee and make a home on some other planet, or live like Battlestar Galactica people. The time to start preparation for something like that is now rather than later. The government can’t get up one morning and say, “Oh crap, that sun looks a little big today. Maybe we should think about technology for leaving this planet.”

        But that aside, again, expanding to space is a stupid idea financially.

        A huge, huge problem of society, is that most things are run by lawyers. And lawyers seek money. They seek to control all, that nothing gets down, without them cashing in. They have ruined our politcal system. They have ruined our judicial system. And by the decisions they make they have ruined our school system, the post office, medi-care, medi-caid, and basically everything they touch. But hey, as long as they are cashing in, they dont see a problem with it. Everyone looks at the homeless guy as the scourge of society. Me, I look at lawyers that way, as they cause more damage than anyone, and we are all left to pay them for the ill they conceive.

        Anarchy is one of those buzzwords that people evoke when they prefer emotional arguments over logical arguments. Most of us have been Propagandized in the Public Schools to associate Anarchy (absence of Government) with chaos when in fact only a couple of cases of near Anarchistic societies have ever existed. So, there really is no evidence to support that contention. There will always be rules enforced by one group of people or another, whether they call themselves Government or something else.

        Most likely the OWS crowd was coached by somebody close to Government. At the very least, the ignorance they show is a direct reflection of the lack of education they’ve received at Government Schools. I have never needed Government to coerce me to be Respectful of my fellows. The few times that Government had become involved in my life, they came to the aid of Immoral people who wanted to take advantage of me.

        Of course they are not. Nor did I say they were. I said that anarchy would work if ALL people HAD self control and respect for the rights of others. People who are truly self governing do not need government. We band together and form government to protect ourselves from people who are not. (See Declaration of Independence.)

        As DaveH has pointed out before, Anarchy is the absence of government. That is NOT the same as the presence of chaos. Unfortunately chaos is listed as a synonym for anarchy. Also when reading the definition you can clearly see where chaos reigns since the word has multiple meanings.

      After watching a presentation on Iran – its beauty, its people, its history – by a travel photographer the other day I came up with a great idea. If these polititicians want to bomb Iran so badly we whould use THEM as the bombs. We start at the top – Little Barry and all in our WH, we then move to the Hill called Capital and load the bomb bays with that scum. Then we use Romney, Gingrich, Santorum. Lastly we use the Joint Cheifs and their ilk. We then move on to the likes of Limbaugh, Levin, Hannity, O’Reiley, et al.

      However, bombing them with the likes of all that scum might p*ss off the Iranian people more than actual bombs.

        Have you figured out why some political types need to promote “Bomb Iran”? It’s mostly to hide the dismal results of “our” inhumane warfare/welfare policies. But then, there’s also the need to get votes from the jewish voting block, in “our” elections.

        A better idea is to just ignore these “world improvers” with the hope that sooner or later, lack of support will result in fewer crackpot ideas.

      We could do a lottery. Anyone interested buys a ticket. There would be minimum standards such as having graduated from high school. Once every other year the lottery is held. Winning tickets get a two year’s term in the House of Representatives. Senators are picked by the state legislatures as we used to do it before the 17th Amendment. We get an honest cross section of American instead of people belonging to the 1% as is the case now. The average net worth of a member of Congress is about one million dollars. Some of course are much richer. Others not such much. This sort of wealth however means that your Representative is likely to be considerably richer than you are. So why do we expect these people to represent us when their own economic class is in the millionaire range? A lottery would fix this. I can’t think of anything else that could…

      You know that these articles are now sounding more and more like Ron Paul. Even to the exact words that he has been using now for 30 years and most recently. Even the other Rep. candidates are using his words. Where has everyone been, including the author of this article? This is not new ideas coming from the author, these are old ideas of what this country is all about. Liberty, freedom, free enterprise, capitalism, constitution. Are people just waking up or are they merrily getting on the band wagon now to make a buck. I am not quite as old as Ron Paul but I have been in the Libertarian mode all my life that I know of. Hell when I was two years and was saying all of those “NO’s”, I knew what freedom was even at that age. Once one realizes what you are and what you want to continue to be, i.e. free, you will not want to give it up and those that interfere with that freedom of the individuals puts themselves into an adversarial position with those persons. So congratulations and thanks for helping to wake up other people.
      I can make the claim of being the first chairman for the Libertarian Party for the county of San Bernardino, CA. John Hospers book on Libertarianism (1971) got me on the road to reading the works of Ayn Rand and other freedom living people. Keep the word going.
