Rand Paul 'Detained' By TSA

The Transportation Security Administration is not gaining any favor with Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who in the past has been critical of the agency and was detained by its agents on Monday.

After going through a body scanner at the airport in Nashville, Tenn., Paul was told that there was an “anomaly” with the scan and that he would have to have a full-body pat-down. The Senator refused the pat-down and offered another scan, but the TSA insisted on a pat-down.

According to The Associated Press, Paul claimed he was “detained” in a small cubicle in the airport, which is about an hour from his home. He missed his flight to Washington for a Senate session.

The TSA denies that Paul was ever detained, but said he refused to follow protocol.

“When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport,” the TSA said in a statement to CBS News. “Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling.”

Both Ron and Rand Paul have been critical of the TSA screening process over the years.

    Senator Paul should have submitted to the pat-down, like others have to. He’s not above the law, we’re supposed to be a nation of laws, not men.

    This goes all the way to the top folks, Rand Paul was an asset, was identified and held so he would miss his engagement at the Pro-Life March in D.C. The PTB are going to start messing with people who do not share their views through things like airport security by TSA etc. what a screwed up government gestapo we endure.

    And how is it that all congressmen have not been granted the trusted traveler status by the TSA? How did Congress miss giving themselves that perk, too? I think it was Huffington Post that just this week posted an article on the massive number of thefts TSA employees have been getting away with. Please, Dr. Ron Paul in 2012!

    Seems like the TSA are not pulling any exceptions? Since the TSA is the norm for the moment, it doesn’t and shouldn’t make a damn bit of difference who you are, the TSA should detain anyone that causes problems.

    Here is a question for the GOP POTUS candidates: Will you impose a review of such reprehensible behavior if elected? How about firing a few numb skulls at high, medium, and low levels in the TSA? Romney said he likes being able to do that – will he?

      In the state of Texas we tried to stop TSA from fondling and radiating our travelers, but someone in the Texas gov helped stop the passage of that bill and obamama’s thugocracy shut that idea down threatening to make Texas a ‘no fly zone.’

      Heck, make us a no fly zone and keep out the commies and protect the conservatives.

    I seem to recall that when Congress is in session, ALL Senatiors and Congressman have “Diplomartic Immunity” and can not be detained or arrested for any reason. Paul should go after the TSA for violating this.

    As problematic as these invasive searches may be to our personal liberties when we travel, the libertarians have no problem telling us what we can do in the bedroom or if a woman seeks an abortion.

    The author failed to mention in his story that Mr. Paul was on his way to speak at an Anti-Abortion rally in Washington. Talk about government overreach!

    Jc, you need to look back to joe 1 cr. Section 6 will explain your question. What all the people that fly need to do is just say no, it will snarl the filghts and bring them to a stand still ( call your office before hand and let them know you wont be in today) they will loose a lot of money and they are all on a shoestring and can’t afford it. The TSA would be thrown out in a weeks time. You need to take a stand and quit complaining.

        Gary, I am not for the violent overthrow of the government but I can read something like; “when in the course of human events…….”
        We can shut down the government without firing a shot, social disobedience. Citizens exercising their constitutional rights is simply enough. With so many rights being violated it would entail perhaps hundreds of millions, perhaps 2 million people to simply say NO. As long as it is happening to Rand Paul that’s OK but let it happen to us and then we cry out for help and wonder why no one is coming to our rescue. Ron Paul wants to do that by simply having the government do what they are specified to do by the constitution and nothing more. Listen to the lot of the candidates and tell me how often, if any, they mention returning to the constitutional. Look at the candidates when Ron Starts speaking about constructional government. They are all looking at him like in a class room wondering what this guy is talking about. some of them are actually picking up on some of this and using it in their talks. But it is just like a parrot saying a word that they have no understanding of.
        Newt has no idea that what he did by working for a organization that ripped off taxpayers was in anyway immoral. Fanny and Freddie should be prosecuted for receiving stolen property, the government ought to be prosecuted for aiding and abetting the process with the money they took from the people, and poor Newt should be looked at as traitor of the American People. I don’t believe that he has the moral attributes to lead anyone.

    I remember Ted Kennedy missed his flight because the name Edward Kennedy was on the airline possible terrorist list. Couldn’t even be “scanned” to satisfy the requirements. Don’t know why the Pauls think they can get away with something WE can’t.

    Obama now has the legal authority to declare U.S. citizens a threat, and detain them indefinetly without legal representation. Just like so many dictators that we have condemned in the past.

    While I feel the TSA is simply incompetent and an over abuse of our gov’t perceived power the fact still remains that Mr. Paul refused to follow protocol. Obviously he is a Senator and well known so why should he be under suspicion. However from the TSA employees standpoint (remember they are basically glorified security guards)he did not follow procedure and the TSA people did. Politically motivated? You betcha. Do you think Senator Paul will deal with these people once back in Washington? You betcha. Just a point though. It seems it isn’t beneath Senator Paul to travel via the regular airlines. That in and of itself speaks highly of the Senator. 2016?

      Mr Paul did NOT refuse to follow protocal. He was willing to be and infact asked to be rescanned. People are rescanned all the time instead of being pulled aside for a patdown so he was within his rights to expect the same treatment.

The constitution is not being followed by the TSA

      An excellent observation, if Senator Paul had been traveling to attend a Senate session. Ron Paul’s email to me said that his son was to give a speech at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. Now, this may be splitting hairs and I am against the Homeland Security theater acted by the TSA. But, I question whether a Senator falls under the protection of Article 1, section 6 protection if he is traveling other than to attend a Senate session. Help me out here.

    TSA was formed after 9/11 because of Muslim terrorists who remain the primary, if not only, group terrorizing us today. Since the Muslims were exempted by TSA for pat downs over a year ago, why do we still need a TSA? It would have been abolished except Obama is preparing the public for martial law and loss of liberty. All of the sheeple going through these radiation machines and submitting themselves and their children to this invasion of liberty and privacy are paving the way for the total takeover by a Communist president who fancies himself as king.

        That is another poor excuse for the fright wingers.Obama did not advocate for the Patriot Act or NDAA it was Congress who by majority vote pushed for or supported these measures. I put the biggest part of the blame squarely on Congress who has a 13-18% approval rating not Obama who has a 48% approval rating. Congress represent a majority of the American people and in most cases a President goes along with what the majority of those Congressional members want. We all know that politics become a part of any Presidents decision making (whether right or wrong). If Obama didn’t vote for NDAA then he would have been accused of being weak on Defense. If he didn’t re-authorize the Patriot Act he would have been accused of supporting terrorism and being weak on Security. Not sure what would happen if Ron Paul is elected. He may veto everything but Congress will just over ride those vetoes.

    People get on planes with all kinds of illegal items. Others have to do contortions to go through. Getting to the heart of terrorism involves only certain kinds of passengers, very easy to identify at a glance. But since the administration considers them “His kind” it is biased to search them. Besides the TSA might actually find something illegal on them and protect the plane and passengers with such a bias. One thing for sure, we can’t be biased against even identifying murderers as terrorists.

Let just one gun get by and a plane crash as a result with a loss of hundreds of lives and the right wingnuts would scream like little girls that our President is soft on terrorism!!So far under President Obama the system has prevented another 9/11 and may it continue to work in spite of political inspired pressure to change it!

        NC; The TSA seems to miss about as many potential threats as they find, so your argument of “saving lives” is a bit misplaced. Get the government (all levels) out of this business and let the airlines do it. They have the data on passengers and this method had proven to be effective for Israel. The feds are not smart enough to figure it out by themselves, so why not copy a proven method?

        The Israelis use profiling and it works very well and does not inconvenience normal passengers. If we were no so politically correct, we would do the same. Frisking diaper-wearing grandmas and little kids is NOT making us safer, it is making us stupider. There is no evidence that these procedures have prevented anything. Yes, and TSA’s actions regarding Sen. Paul were illegal under the Constitution (or what’s left of it).

        The TSA detected something on Rand Paul’s knee which triggered the attempted body search. Paul pulled up his pant leg and nothing was found so TSA requested a full body hand search. The TSA overreached again with this passenger and could have avoided the controversy. It also shows that the full body X-Ray scanner used in Paul’s first attempt wasn’t very efficient. If it can pick up an object when none was there then the machine has a glitch not the passenger. TSA needs to correct THEIR problems and not be accusing passengers of hiding things. I do agree with NC that Israel also uses their own “TSA” agents and if someone did sneak past our TSA and blew up a plane it would be on the Presidents head.

        Michael, you got it. do we have the TSA at drug stores, automotive garages, bus stations, rail stations, Why airplanes. It is in the interest of the airlines to protect their property and personnel. What this amounts to is a welfare program for airlines. Now they can have their protection at tax payer expense. corporate welfare, simple and direct. The airlines should insist that they provide their own protection as they can then find a way to do it where it is cost effective and only the persons using the airlines would be paying for it, not every tax payer in the nation. Just another way of putting citizens in slavery so that others may exist.

How is it that about half of those hijackers are either still alive or a couple of them were dead before 9/11? How could they “commandeer” those huge jets when they could barely fly little 2 men planes? If you believe that then everything else you comment on has no bearing here!!         The evidence that 9/11 was perpetrated by our own government is overwhelming. Simply, too much evedence to site here. I was shocked about 6 months ago, when faced with the truth of it, but researched everything I could. This false flag event was the catalyst needed to go to Iraq, and to rapidly strip us of our liberties… Patriot Act, NDAA, TSA, etc. “Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security”, Benjamin Franklin.

        Even if 9/11 wasn’t a False Flag, at the very least it embodied the methods used by Big Government to take over a country. The attacks at the least were a failure of Government security, and a failure of overseas meddling in other countries’ affairs. Of course they’re going to make enemies. If we had the Mexican Army up here patrolling our streets with Assault Weapons, we’d be a little pissed at Mexico, wouldn’t we?
        So Government screws up, as usual, and their solution — MORE Government of course. If we bought goods or services in the Free Marketplace and they failed, would we continue to patronize that business? Well, NC might. But I’m talking about thoughtful people.

        Over 98% of the guns found are in the possession of legal concealed carry permit holders. I.e., people who are not a threat.

        Indeed, if permit holders were allowed to carry on flights, there would be no need for the TSA.

        And, no, one shot through the fuselage will not cause an airplane to crash. If it did, no shot-up B-29s would have returned from Japan or SAM-holed B-52s from North Vietnam. They are all pressurized Boeings.

    If the Catholic Church is being charged with child abuse because of what its clergy did to boys, then what should the TSA be charged with for groping children, inserting fingers into women, and even to the point of taking adult diapers off incontinent senior citizens? Outrageous!!!
    Senator Rand Paul and Congressman Ron Paul are CORRECT, I think, in criticizing the TSA. More members of Congress ought to criticize TSA also because not only is it not morally right, in my opinion, those X-ray machines subject TSA workers and the public going thru them to ionizing radiation. Also, I think TSA’s procedures are akin to a sort of ‘search and seizure’ deal without a warrant. But that’s my opinion.

      Detaining him for any reason and even questioning him was illegal and unconsitutional.
