Obama Administration Denies Keystone Pipeline Permit

President Barack Obama announced that he will deny a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, as he noted that the Republicans tried to impose a “rushed and arbitrary deadline” that did not give officials enough time to properly evaluate the project, Fox News reported.

According to the news outlet, GOP lawmakers immediately responded to the President’s move, as House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Obama is “selling out American jobs for politics.” He noted that the Republicans in Congress would keep pushing for the pipeline.

The decision by the President does not definitively kill the project, as the State Department said the denial “does not preclude any subsequent permit application.” Within hours of hearing about the move by Obama, TransCanada, the company behind the pipeline, announced it would reapply for a permit, Fox News reported.

“Until this pipeline is constructed, the U.S. will continue to import millions of barrels of conflict oil from the Middle East and Venezuela and other foreign countries,” TransCanada said in a statement. “Thousands of jobs continue to hang in the balance if this project does not go forward.”

The Washington Times reported that U.S. Chamber of Commerce head Tom Donohue said that the move by the President sends a message to the business community and investors that America is not open for business.

    I think somebody misread one of their lines up there in Washington DC !! Canada can always override President Obama with the NAFTA treaty ! That NAFTA Treaty is the LAW. They should just build it, and get the OK from the NAFTA committee ….

    Obama has wanted and continues to want the Keystone deal. He’s just using this critical issue for leverage to get some kind of concession from the GOP. Politics 101! Pretty simple stuff!

      Not as simple as you may think. Obama is in a corner as he can’t satisfy the unions (jobs) and the wacko environmentalists (Doc Sarvis) at the same time.

    On this proposal the administration had only a couple of months to look into it. Considering the BP oil spill to rush into another potential hazard would be foolish. This pipeline needs thorough examination as it goes over a hug freshwater acqufer, through the grain belt, through hundreds of communities, with weather (tornados) and geologic hazards (earthquakes). If we require that this project be carefully planned then all of us can welcome the project but it is not there yet.

    By far, most of the American jobs that are discussed are temporary. Do we have any guarentee that the petroleum products will be for Americans or just sold to the highest bidder (read China).

      Doc, There was no rush. The study has been on going for THREE YEARS.(not months)
      There are also other pipe lines already going through that so called sensitive area for decades. No problems.
      The Alaskan pipeline is proof we have the know how to make an environmentaly safe pipeline.(30+ years no problems)
      There is no excuse for the way Obama is handling this.

    How could those Republicans even think anyone could make an evaluation in ONLY three years.
    Obama wanted an answer about extending the payrole tax relief in even less time.
    Since Obama reneged on his part of the agreement, does the House renege on the extension?
