OWS For Credit At Columbia University

A new class being offered for credit at New York’s Columbia University will allow young people to join the ranks of OWS protesters not as unemployed, disgruntled activists, but as anthropology students.

Upperclassman and graduate students at the Ivy League school where the average yearly cost of attendance is around $60,000 — well over the annual income of Americans considered poor — will take to the streets under the direction of Dr. Hannah Appel to learn about economic inequality. The class is dubbed “Occupy the Field: Global Finance, Inequality, Social Movement.” Instruction will be split between spending time with the 99 percent and lectures at the college’s campus.

Appel, who earned a Ph.D. in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University, reportedly has previously spent time alongside OWS protesters and defended the movement on her blog, writing: “It is important to push back against the rhetoric of ‘disorganization’ or ‘a movement without a message’ coming from left, right and center.”

The professor told New York Post that though she does have affection for the protests, she believes she is still objective in her teaching methods.

“Inevitably, my experience will color the way I teach, but I feel equipped to teach objectively,” Appel told the Post. “It’s best to be critical of the things we hold most sacred.”

    Well Ann, I’m glad you got a laugh out of the Hollywood sign ‘head’ story, makes you think doesn’t it. But it’s not surprising, the Chief of LAPD wont allow his officers to tow away the vehicles of illegal aliens at sobriety check points because “it isn’t their fault that they can’t get drivers licenses”, go figure, welcome to La La Land.

    Well, earlier this morning when the head was found near the Hollywood sign in California, the police said they felt it was a homicide. I nearly fell off my chair laughing. They felt it was a homicide. I thought it was a suicide!!!!! I thought that I had heard it all. But this beats anything I have heard about today. Columbia University! HA HA HA They have got to be kidding!!!! Dr. Hannah Appel needs to be committed for intensive psychiatric care because I think she’s off her rocker. This is the stupidest thing I’ve heard all day. College credit to participate in OWS for anthropology research? Here in Lincoln, the Occupy Lincoln folks are going to have to find someplace else for their little camp-out because where they are now is soon to be a construction zone.

    It’s going to be interesting when the good professor demonstrates to her ‘students’ how to defecate on a police car, how to rape a girl with drooling witnesses, and how to slit another’s throat (guess they’ll use a homeless person for that one). Yep, Anthropology has stooped to a new low thanks to Columbia University.

    It does my heart good to hear that the children of the wealthy and some professors are actually open to the possibility that something “stinks” on Wall St and the current financial set-up and that growing economic inequality in this country can and should be acknowledged and addressed.

      45caliber, thanks for mentioning that. Some may not believe that an American school (college or a university) would DARE offer courses in pornography. It’s true.
      I had the chance to take at least one porn course (many years ago). I thought it was a combination of dumb and hilarious at the time. Since then, it serves to prove that some things can’t be left to mere professors who confuse academics with a warped, touchy-feely, ‘do whatever feels good’ approach to “higher” education. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those over-educated dolts voted for Obummer and had a chance to be czars, too.

    As I have said many times, New Yorkers are hicks and ignorant and stupid and this further proves it. They are the largest group of ill-informed, bed-hopping, and non-thinking people I have ever met on my trips to NYC and the garbage they write and get published reveals it even more. Gee, wonder why that state just doesn’t drop off into the surrounding waters? That would be a good start to cleaning up a lot of our mess in America. Then on to DC!

    Folks, she’s a prof who gleefully confuses subjectivity with objectivity. Why, she could be a CZAR!
    At the very least, she could ‘work’ for the NY Times or any of the predictably subjective major TV networks. When I see people like ‘Dr.’ Appel get media access, I’m glad I avoided most social studies courses. She proves that anybody who refuses to sort subjectivity from objectivity truly has a retard for a prof and a dumbed-down robot for a student.
    She could have gone to ‘work’ for any non-profit,
    still be as a card-carrying, retarded utopian and saved thousands of dollars. So much for an “education,” eh?
