Massachusetts Senate Race Leads To Big Spending

Outside groups on both sides of the Massachusetts Senate race are spending millions of dollars to endorse their choice and attack the opposing candidate, The Associated Press reported.

According to the news outlet, the race between Elizabeth Warren and Senator Scott Brown has gained national attention, as the seat that was held for nearly 50 years by Edward M. Kennedy is open in 2012.

The AP reported that the race in Massachusetts may foreshadow what the national election will be like, as special interest groups and Super PACs will likely play a significant role.

“Massachusetts is at the end of the spear of what will be the big trend and the big story of 2012,” Ken Goldstein, president of Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks spending on political ads, told the news outlet.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the Massachusetts race is representative of the two sides of the political spectrum, as Warren has offered her support for the Occupy Wall Street protests while Brown is campaigning on traditional Republican themes of smaller government and lower taxes.

    What has happened? I’m beginning to have some hope. This series of blogs and replies is getting close to the realities and truths we have to deal with! We somehow have to get back to a democracy, and work together and build consensus, get away from lobby money, etc etc. Let’s keep it up everyone.

        I take it s.c. you don’t want a democracy? What are you doing here in the USA then? To, as you say, #^*+ it up? Please tell us. As best I can tell, democracy is on the verge of being #^*+ by the oligarchs, who have made the disparity in wealth in this nation the greatest/worst in the developed and developing countries.

        By the way, s.c., you have your facts backwards – the workers in no way control the means of production – the companies do and have exported them to China etc. The means of production are controlled by whoever has the stock and stock options – rarely are these the workers, but when they workers are allowed to be investors and participants, those businesses thrive. BUt s.c., I’m sure you would consider that Marxism.

    And therein lies the problem: NO ONE is DISCUSSING THE ISSUES OF IMPORTANCE, they are too busy making snide, nasty remarks about one another as if personality was the big vote catcher. The other half of the problem is the fact that THERE IS NO CAP ON THE AMOUNT OF MONEY A CANDIDATE MAY SPEND….it gives the impression that elected seats are for sale to the highest bidder and noting what we now have in Congress the assumption is more likely the correct one. Not one candidate has uttered anything of substance on the issues important to the VOTERS.

    You don’t know what you’ve lost until it is gone, and the reason for the loss will be self evident. Liberalism, a progressive word for the workings of socialism and communism, will destroy capitalism, and in doing so this country, through convincing the American people, as the people of Massachusetts are, that the US Constitution is obsolete and a hindrance to needed policies, to promote their welfare by usurping the rights and freedoms that old document ensures and protects, from our government seizing and destroying them, to the detriment of the American people. That lost will eventually be the Liberty that Massachusetts was so instrumental in securing during the days of colonialism and the Revolutionary War, but by their voting record in the present day, will have lost what they so valiantly fought for in their past.

      The moribund behavior on Wall Street gave Capitalism a black eye. They only need to look at themselves in how they pumped up crony capitalism to keep the money flowing.This croneyism helped to usurp the rights and freedoms of ordinary Americans and set the Middle Class back.Wall Street protected itself while the life savings of ordinary citizens took a hit.To always blame Liberals is just too easy in avoiding the other culprits.

    The Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts have had an extremely bad case of heart burn since Brown won the last election and took over the mantle that had been held for so long by Kennedy. Warren, a very staunch Progressive/Socialist is in hot pursuit of this position. The main objective is very easy to see, returning control of the state to what it was before plus recapturing a seat in the Senate. The Super PAC’s and special interest groups will go to any lengths, no matter how low such actions may be, to once again reinstate that which only “they know” is best for everyone. This will be an interesting race to watch but don’t be surprised if there is a swell of dumb downed voters that appear out of thin air.

      You mean like those who vote anti-abortion but don’t have any health insurance themselves?

      You mean like those who will vote for 38% credit card rates and faulty loan procedures because they are told the rich need to be rich so THEY can get a job while the jobs are going to China?

      You mean like those who don’t have criminal records who are told they can keep their guns, if they want to, but the money for jails is going to be cut again?

      You mean like those who want a drug of choice for recreation other than alcohol but who will vote against their own self interest because REEFER MADNESS mentality is rampit from the right?

      It’s a baaaaaaaby, but once it’s born it doesn’t get head start or any of the other proven programs that gives a kid a chance.

        you speak of head start. I started school in 1955 with a family of five kids that was DIRT poor. They didn’t have head start or anything like that, yet the one i started kindergarten with went on to get his PHD in the Bio Sciences. he and his whole family were poor, but they had one thing most of these OWS punks and a lot of other progs will never have. He had pride, drive and WORK ETHIC!!!! He went to college on scholorships. How did he get them? HE worked his ass off studying while the rest of the kids were out playing and having fun. HE GOT WHAT HE WANTED THE HARD WAY!!! HE WORKED FOR IT!!!

        The era you speak of was the time when the poor had that opportunity and could see that light at the end of the tunnel so many did pull them up by their bootstraps, but that was then and this is now their boots have worn out and been disposed of and now there is no bootstraps to pull themselves up by so we need to rethink how we do things today which is a very different era. I’m older than you and very well remember those days, Life for the poor was good then compared to today so do not apply an outdated method in today’s era it will not work

        Sorry but my division location was the only one of four locations in the division that was represented by a union and we were the go to division for problem solving and repair etc and that is not my word that was the word of our management and as they would ship stuff from the other locations when they screwed up to us to get it right. Piecemeal shops are are a real pain, sounds like you could not get along with either he union or management. Problems with piecemeal is often management gives the jobs that could make the most money went to their pets in an unfair manner. Our local hated piece meal as those shops caused the most problems. We worked together real well with a lot higher level of respect between the union people and management as rarely did either side try to crap on one another.

    Scott Brown has made decisions I did not agree with, but then, I did not have all the facts as he must have had and a couple,the facts indicate, to me & in my mind, he did not vote properly.

    BUT, if Elizabeth Warren is elected I cannot precieve of any decision she would make that I would or could agree with.

    In my opinion Elisabeth Warren is a marxist!

    I’ll stick with Scott Brown, thank you.

      What really needs to happen is that there should be absolutely NO outside money n elections, period – none, nada, zero. Let these candidates get up and talk to us straight away. Otherwise Wall Street, the Koch Brothers, and any big money interest will control all of us, as they now do.

      As for marxism or that sort of stuff, what we have now is a Soviet-style oligarchy with big money interests controlling essentially everything – the regular guy controls nothing any more. If Socialsim is protecting the regular guy from 38% credit card interest rates, preventing Wall Street from the financial rape of the middle class, then bring it on. BUt that is not Socialism – it is common sense assurance that we can all play by the same rules. GIve each of us all at least a chance. Everyone should work, but the flip side is that the jobs have to be provided, not sent to China by an uncaring and greedy bunch of hedge fund business wreckers.

      The Super Pacs are in large part BIg Business, Big Wall Street, Koch Brothers type organizations who strongly feel that the super wealthy do in fact know what is best for us, not the ordinary guy. The ordinary guy can perhaps contribute 10 or perhaps 50 dollars; the Koch Brothers, Wall Street, and the like can send in billions of dollars by a single corporation, to a Super Pac, and they are doing it. Look at Iowa and the Republican caucus effort there alone – tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to control a single caucus. If you want a nation wrecked, a democracy destroyed, continue that nonsense.

        They can’t compete or compare with the big boys, who would like to be sure there isn’t a single union member or reasonably paid worker in the entire nation. Until theWall Streeters and the Koch Brothers types control and have essentially all the wealth, they won’t be happy. The unions are settling for less than 1/2 the wages they previously had, with fewer benefits, and will never make it into the middle class again. So look forward to a nation of the very wealthy and the struggling poor – take a look at India or Mexico to see where we are headed if this persists. This nation has not done well over time without some sort of slaves doing the work – first here, now in China, and soon here again.

        In any case, I agree with you Skip.. Take the Cash out of the equation and the ‘fat’ cows can only graze within their own mire. What the hell good is donating a buck to the elections every year on your tax return if the candidates can take that from the coffers of our heart felt ‘donation’ and add it to the millions that sly interest groups DON’T donate but instead offer as an insurance that if elected, they will receive ten-fold back. You think donating a buck on taxes is paltry? Add it up among ALL working stiffs THEN cut it in half and you’ll STILL have enough to choke on.. Forbid outside special interest donations! Make the candidates spend their own (limited amount of) money.. after all, this isn’t a free welfare ride.. then dole out the donated monies that the public gave within that four year period (as a limit) to the last two men (or women) standing and let them use their imaginations in getting their word across.. I’m sick of seeing people get off on serious felony charges and becoming elected by the MONEY they spend.. Eliminate this and I guarantee that we will have more notable candidates running for office. (and this goes for all elected politicians)..

        I was a active member of a Union for 37 years and not once did I see any union (I have read oodles of contracts with many companies) ever see a union or hear of a union controlling their means of production, this is a management only function. Unions negotiate wages, benefits and work rules never means of production. Incidentally I am now retired and at the Company I worked at for 40 years pays me in excess of a $1,000.00 per month more pension than my non union friends at that location who worked for the same company and I receive more SS as my wages were also higher, that is the reality of what Unions can do not what you allege. It is you who has the mentality of a grade school child. GROW UP!!!

        Gee smilee, guess you closed your eyes and ears when Abummer gave GM to the unions!!! They control the production!!! BTW if you don’t believe the union controls production, just go to a shop where there is a piece rate on a job. Watch what happens whenthe company comes around to time the job. The union will tell the workers to slow down to make the rate lower so they can get paid EXTRA by running what the normal rate of the job is!! Been there smilee, don’t try to piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining!!!

You forgot to mention the pay and benefit cuts the auto workers took, starting pay is half what it once once and production methods etc are still determined by management not unions in the auto industry. Your a real sucker for the far right wing radical rhetoric and have swallowed it hook line and sinker. You would be well advised to speak only about things you know something about rather than so boldly exhibit your ignorance to those of us that do know.

        Compare the total dollars spent by unions and union pacs and it dwarfs the big corporate spending on elections. Unions now only have up to 12% of the employees in the country as their members and are no longer big even though they are often referred to as such. They spend a lot of money but only a small amount when compared to corporations and rich folks now

        Elizabeth Warren is a courageous lady and has fought for consumer protections for several years now. She believes businesses should have an honest backbone and be accountable when they stay from solid and acceptable practices. Such as Insider Trading or unscrupulous interest rates. She is solid on financial issues which would be great for any state office holder.
