Florida Lawmakers Allow Guns In Capitol, Install Panic Buttons

Since the Republican-dominated Legislature in Florida made it easier to carry guns in the State’s Capitol, Democrats are noting that every Senator and staffer has now had a panic button installed on his or her phone.

The new law says that local governments may not regulate guns, except in those places specified by Florida law. Although the State bans guns in legislative chambers and committee rooms, they can now be carried in other parts of the Capitol complex located in Tallahassee. Previously, entrants to the complex had been asked to leave their firearms at the door or be followed around the building by a guard.

Mike Haridopolos, the Republican Senate president, said the panic buttons were not a response to the new gun law, but a long-planned feature that was supposedly “just finally getting instituted.” But Democratic legislators in the State say that it is an odd coincidence, according to St. Petersburg Times.

A safety course recently offered to State employees by Capitol Police included an update on the law’s “impact on the Capitol” and “how to respond to an active shooter situation.”

“Instead of reversing what we did, we’re resorting to panic buttons,” said Florida Senate Democratic leader Nan Rich of Weston, who opposed the new gun law. “It’s unnerving. My staff is very nervous.”

    The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground. History, in general, only informs us what bad government is. A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government. Most bad government has grown out of too much government. The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. Were we directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should soon want bread. The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.     Folks I think its time to take matters into our own hands and no longer allow these idiots who have run our country into the ground ruin anymore than they already have. The people have got to physically take action and throw out these sheltered politicians who threaten our lives with they’re unrealistic view of life and what they feel is best for everyone. Haven’t they stolen enough of our hard earned money and that of our grandkids future? What is it going to take to finally take action and fix this mess ourselves? Our Constitution states that it is our right to have a revolution to clean out corrupt government but I don’t see people uniting and taking action. We’re voting out one crook and replacing him with another then we wonder why nothing has changed.

    It’s stupid for the staff to be nervous. No law abiding gun owner who would be a problem, and the law breakers wouldn’t care about the law if they were intent upon shooting someone, which is a far worse crime than bringing the gun there.

    On a side note, legislators SHOULD be nervous. Our government has long since overstepped themselves. One of these days, someone WILL get it into their head that enough is enough.

    There are many sensible gun owners(the majority)but they have no comprehension of what to do with those “good gun owners” who are allowed to own guns but still go out and do bad things. It’s all a catch 22 situation where we all have to wait and see after the damage is done. That goes for both sides. If everyone is allowed to pack in a Statehouse and everyone at sometime in their life hates a political then this law endangers those politicians. No matter what tripe or political assaults we throw around there are those who act upon their thoughts. Bullets don’t distinguish who the good or bad politician is and they could become easy pickings. The gun lobby may be winning this one but the hundreds of tourist visiting these buildings put them in jeopardy also. Remember that Lincoln had armed guards in and outside the Ford Theater and John Wilkes Booth got away. So being armed isn’t the panacea that everyone gloats about. If Booth wasn’t allowed in the building in the first place or at least his gun Lincoln would still have been alive.

      Anyone can be assassinated if the assassin is prepared to die in the attempt. When Duke Fredrick was assassinated (prior to WWI), the group who did it met prior to the attempt and split into four groups. The first group was to scatter along the route and attempt to kill him. The second group stood behind the first group – and if the first didn’t make the attempt, they killed him. The third and fourth groups did the same. That insured the first group – and the rest – would act. It is only when the assassin sets up a plan to get away that the victim has a real chance. It doesn’t matter what kind of defenses or laws you might have in place. It only depends upon the determination of the assassin.

        I don’t understand how liberals don’t get that, if guns are banned, the innocent and law abiding will be the only ones who will be defenseless. Criminals will have guns, including (and especially) government. This would be the last nail in the coffin for everyone.

        Not that they really need to take guns in order to prevail, if they want to go all-out. I think they just enjoy slowling degrading and torturing us. It’s their entertainment.

        They DO understand that the innocent will be unable to resist. They don’t really fear the criminals – those prey mostly on their own kind. They want to eliminate any threat from the honest citizens. Without guns, the citizens cannot resist any government move. You can get rid of the criminals easily by instituting a police state – but right now the citizens would have a fit. They simply don’t care if the innocent are helpless; they just want to insure they themselves are not.

        A typical example: Sen. Diane Feldstein carries a gun. She was asked if she was going to give it up if she got passage of a bill to ban guns. “NO, of course not,” she said. “I need mine to protect myself from all those out there who want to harm me.”

        Not sure why you brought up the assassination of the Archduke of Austria but okay. Actually there were a few attempts on his life and all failed. There were 10 members of the Black Hand (A Serbian Nationalist group) and 7 members of Young Bosnia willing to kill the Archduke. Austria had annexed Bosnia and Serbia in 1908 which brought about the assassination attempts. The assassins gave up but Gavrilo Princip was heading home when he caught the Archdukes car (strictly by chance). He then ran up to the car and shot both the Archduke and his wife. That event triggered WWI and one of the world’s greatest follies. That also brings out the point that arming civilians allows them to kill public officials which can lead to greater conflict. I really doubt if Reagan wanted that bullet in his shoulder either but I suppose we were lucky because it was by an American who had his 2nd Amendment right to be armed.

      Eddie, if anyone was real intent on killing Politicians why use a gun when you know there may be other armed people who could stop you. Ask the Islamic Terrorists the best way, as they do it all of the time. Some type of explosive device is the answer. Maximum destruction & the most number of victims. Why shoot one or two, when you can blow up twenty & since you will probably die if you try with a gun, blowing yourself up won’t matter. If someone is really determined to kill you, they will kill you, one way or the other. A police officer or an armed Citizen will not be a deterrent for a true assassin.

    I have a CCW and do carry 99% of the time however I would not want to carry in the Capital because I am affride I would be shot by some nervous nilly because they think I am armed. Also I would not go to the Capital for anything anyway.

    I am trained well enough to fight back without carrying a weapon, I have several ways of fighting back.

    Peter B: I am pro gun however you brought up the Gifford shooting saying there would be less carnage had there been an armed citizen on site.There was at the time and he didn’t realize the shooter had been disarmed.Someone had to actually stop him from shooting the guy with the shooters gun.Just because you own a gun it doesn’t make you smart or qualify you to be a cop.

      This is the type of lie we expect from jopa. The armed person was not in the imidiate vicinty of the shooting he was coming out of a store. When he saw the shooter had been seized and was being held he stopped his draw and joined those holding the shooter until the authorities arrived to take him into custody. NO ONE else stopped him from shooting he saw the need for him to draw his weapon and consider shooting was passed so he acted ON HIH ON to not draw.

      The average armed Citizen may not always respond correctly unless he has had some type of self defense training. That is why I always recommend someone who intends to CCW to attend a defensive tactile training course. They are not overly expensive & will give you some experience in responding to various unexpected situations. Secondly, practice, practice, practice, as missing an intended target can have drastic results, including your death as well as others. Also remember, it is not the Police Officers job to protect you, their job is to solve crimes, after the fact. In most instances they can’t be pro-active, as they arrive after the crime has been committed. Always be aware of what is happening around you, you only learn how to accomplish that with practice & training.

    Fellow Americans, while I’ve had fun here in all honesty I must say the implications of this conversation are quite serious and perhaps it would be wise no to take them so lightly on my part.

    I do not relish confrontation or the idea of harming a fellow American (or human being), however, my father who was an “old timer” taught me how to watch nature {the animals, birds, plants,} to see when a storm was coming…..and it seems one is on it’s way.

      You are correct. When it hits and how much damage is does is the real concern. Everyone should be prepared to take care of themselves (stocked food, etc) and be able to defend it when it happens. The question is how soon it will come and what will set it off. Only the libs fail (or refuse) to see it coming.

You have to protect yourself & family members, as other Patriots may not be in a position to help you. Your first priority is protecting you & your loved ones. The reason I list you first, is that without your survival, the outlook for your families survival is questionable if you are not there to be their protector.

    Read our Constitution! It says the RIGHT ( God given) to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
    Nowhere in it does it limit where we can or can not be armed. We have the right to be armed everywhere. Any law or rule that limits where we can not is unconstitutional. I will be the one to sue anyone that causes me to be hurt or robber when guns are prohibited. They have denied me the right of self-defense. I carry all of the time and will continue to do so. On the rare occasions that I submit to the ignorance of leaving my gun in my vehicle for someone to break into and steal it I am being deniedy rights granted by our Constitutuion. Politician fear guns. They are of the opinion that unarmed people are under their total control. I never will be considered a peasant, but a well armed and educated citizen.

      The facts are that only about 9% of the guns used in crime in Mexico came from the USA. Just about the same as the unemployment rate since Obama got into office. Most of the Mexican guns come from Central America & former Communist European Countries. The FBI released the facts & the Brady Campaign added a 0 to the 9%, making it 90%. To enact more gun laws, they inflate the actual # & Liberals believe them.

    When you ban firearms from ANY location, all you’re doing is creating a guaranteed “Target Rich” environment! Virginia Tech wouldn’t have had nearly as many fatalities as they did if concealed carry had been allowed.

      There was an incident at – I think – the University of Tennessee several years ago. A sniper began to shoot at students. After hitting three of them he was “subdued” by other students as reported by the media.

      What the media did NOT state was that the students involved had guns of their own. They came up from three directions and give the sniper a choice – drop his gun or die. He decided to drop the gun.

      But it wasn’t PC to report how they “subdued” him.

    Look at the college that had the shooting. Now they are blaming the school with a slow response. ( legal action to follow )They should of had all students take a concealed carry class then they would be safe .

      When my daughter was in college, it was illegal for her to keep even a thin plastic knife in her dorm room to spread peanut butter. Much less something that she might use for protection. Do you know how hard it is to find a good rat tail comb now? I had to look several places to get her a dozen or so to keep around.

        the second shooting, the first was in one of the Virginia Tech parking lots. I’m not assuming anything. Only what I’ve read in the papers online. I think it’s too soon to know all the facts. Unless you somehow do. There are a lot of parking lots on that campus and I am familiar with where the lot is that the first shooting is said to have taken place. I’ve parked there myself many times.

    I approve of the Law it will make a good model,When Lawbiding Citizens carry, less percentage of crime. Not to sound ignorent but I feel that there would have been less deaths and casulties at the Fort Hood and Gabreal Giffords Situations, if there were Carrying Citizens on site.

      But how can you trust soldiers to know how to use guns! Any lib will tell you that since all soldiers are volunteers the only reason they want to be a soldier is because they are prospective murderers who want to have a legal reason to kill someone.

      You are right, our soldiers were not armed that day as it is base policy that only the MPs carry. Had the soldiers been carrying, Mr. Hasan would be dead and far less of our guys would have been killed. The press is really keeping his trial information secret….we will have to work hard to make sure this guy gets what he deserves…a bullet soaked in pig blood during his execution after he is found guilty of several counts of murder.

        Use hollow point bullets. Prior to the execution, set the bullets on end and fill the hollow points with pig’s blood. Let it dry and continue to fill the bullets until the hollow is filled with dried pig’s blood. When he is shot, the pig’s blood will then liquidfy. You get more pig’s blood into him and it also won’t mess up the gun as much.

        Our government has officially and actively turned on us now.

        BTW, Cheaptrick made the point that Obama’s legitimacy is ignored by everyone in office because our Constitutional Republic has been replaced by a Corporatocracy (which we knew) and, as such, the Constitution is no longer the Law of the Land. The US is officially a corporation, and Obama has been placed in as CEO. He needs no qualifications other than the approval of the corporation.

        The rest of us have been still trying to play by the rules of the Republic, and getting nowhere. The Corporation is proceding with the implementation of its own rules…for US…with the clear message that our input is no longer welcome or even of any consequence, except to categorize us into groups according to our usefulness, or lack thereof.

        So, what do we do now?

        They know that many of us won’t cooperate, and they’ve planned for this now. When the grid goes down, we will be completely immobilized. Many will die from this alone, even if they don’t ever make it to a camp.

        These guys are playing hardball. We are about to reach the grand crescendo… I wonder if there is any way out of this except…UP.

        Just to make you feel better, the Senate just voted to pass a bill that allows the feds to arrest anyone of “suspected terrorism” without having to place charges and can lock up people without trial or other papers. FEMA, here we come!

        I’m very sorry to say this, but we will likely be seeing people begin to disappear.

        For God’s sake, we must NOT bow to any of their fake laws anymore! Doing so does not keep us safe. It only brings on more oppression. As long as we comply, it will keep getting worse, because by our compliance, we are accepting and approving.

        Ultimately, they will try to do what they plan to do. Playing along with them will only buy a moment…it won’t stop them.

That is what is wrong in Washington….they believe they have all the rights and we, the citizens have none….they are wrong.

        That is the whole point. You do have the right to defend your home,family and property but not the right to endanger someone in certain places such as a Statehouse or Courthouse. There are certain places where you don’t want a shootout going on.

The fact that there might be innocent people around does not mean you have to stand there and let someone kill you. THEY might prefer you allowed yourself to be killed but that doesn’t mean you have to do it. Perhaps this is what you were thinking? I’m not sure.

        If there are no weapons in the building by unauthorized personel then there wouldn’t be any worry about a shootout occurring.That would make it a might easier for those authorized personel to know who the perpetrator is.

    LOL, idiots. If someone really wants to go ballistic and go on a shooting rampage, a panic button won’t do anything but waste a microsecond when microseconds count. They should take the hint and get guns themselves. Everyone ought to be armed everywhere and at all times.

      I think its one of the best things to happen. How many times are people going to have to be killed in these so called “gun safe” zones where people cannot defend themselves against the nut who intends on killing innocent people knowing no one can shoot back. Facts have shown that places allowing guns have saved lives due to people being able to shoot back at the insane person doing the shooting.

    I think if I were a lawmaker, I would just pack too. When seconds count, the police are only minutes (if not an hour) away.

      Some Congressmen were already carrying, so the only change is allowing Citizens with Permits to carry concealed in the Capitol Building. Maybe if the Democrats weren’t crooks to begin with & followed the Constitution they would not have to worry about someone wanting to take them out, at least in Pelousy or Reid’s case.
