FBI Too Big For Current Facilities

According to the FBI, its exponential growth since 2001 has rendered its headquarters too small for the agency. The agency is housed in the J. Edgar Hoover Building, which occupies an entire city block on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) said Tuesday that the FBI will have to soon begin considering plans to grow its space through relocation or renovation of the current building. Both options will take years and probably reach into the billions of dollars, according to The Washington Post.

FBI Assistant Deputy Director T.J. Harrington said that a new consolidated FBI headquarters facility is urgently needed and viewed as one of FBI officials’ highest priorities for the foreseeable future.

Besides the J. Edgar Hoover Building, the FBI’s staff of about 17,300 employees and contractors work at 40 other sites throughout the country. Twenty-two of the sites are in the Washington, D.C., area, according to the report.

A recent GAO report indicated that in addition to the FBI running out of space, security of FBI facilities is lacking. Many FBI offices are in busy areas or share space with other lessees in multi-tenant buildings.

According to the article, the cheapest option the FBI has to complete a renovation of facilities will cost more than $850 million.

    I Agree with what you’ve stated Samurai.Get rid of the Welfare deptment,Then while your at it cut the food stamp program too.The F.B.I. is no differant,They shouldn’t be getting new quarter to live in,They should be cut back ,that should more than solve their problem for them.

    The FBI should get rid of some of their OWN fat, like the Air Force and other services are having to do.

      You mean like the cutting of 450 officers by the USAF? That was unnecessary. We need to get rid of the welfare state. This would save us countless billions or trillions of dollars. Obama bin Laden Care can be the first to go. That will save us $1 trillion dollars. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

    The FBI ,along with all of the federal government needs cut by at least half . Counting all the federal police agencies , all the state police agencies , then county and city police agencies , I feel we are getting pretty close to having one cop to every citizen , oops , I mean subject .

      Let’s not forget how many defenses had to be put into building it also. Thicker walls, compound wall around it, defense positions for the military stationed there, concrete bunkers, yes it sounds more defenseable than the FBI building. Happy Veterans Day and let’s not forget the ones that never made it back. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

    With the demand of increasing the size of security forces in our country to ward off the threat of terrorism brings on a new threat of over regulations and restrictions of the freedoms of our citizens. This President and his desire to create a security force larger than our standing military makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Who are these people that the Obama administration is hiring and who is vetting them? We have an Attorney General who has made policy and is responsible for clandestine programs that are illegal and have caused the death of Americans. His power is backed by President Obama who appointed and supports him. Our congress should investigate and check the backgrounds of the people that are with in our security forces to make sure that an eliminate that is not controlled by the American people is non existent within our security system.

    How about spreading government offices around the country. Lower wages! More talent! Lowers unemployment in needed areas! Building already exist – many owned by the government! It makes no sense at all to add any jobs in the D.C. areas!

      Yes, Mr. Richard, I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. I can see that some presence of the FBI is needed in the nation’s capital, or in the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area, but why not give some thought and consideration to move the bulk of the support & administrative operation in a nearby state like West Virginia, southern Pennsylvania, Maryland or even outside the northern Virginia area, where there is space availability at a lower cost. I bet you that a majority of the 17.300 employees/staff would not mind to re-allocate for reasons explained by Mr. Richard.

      FBI employees will enjoy a higher quality of life to raise their families outside the already overcrowded Washington D.C. area at a lower cost, avoiding less non-productive commuting time, and above all the Federal Government has no lack of underutilized office building or military installations which could be used for better purposes and save tax payers money of “we the people” particularly in present times! Nationwide, the FBI field offices can tap and rely on a functional high-tech computerized & information data bank support system from any location in the aforementioned regions, outside the nations capital.

        They could move to Detroit. There are lots of empty buildings to move into and the staff that has to move could find very affordable housing. Since housing is so cheap we could then cut their wages a bit and they would still have at least as good of a standard of living.

        How about we do something totally insane like….cut the FBI by 20%. ARE YOU CRAZY? How would we ever get those guns to the cartels? Or raid the illegal pot shops next to Pelosi’s campaign headquarters? Or get rid of the union mob bosses that are causing the OWS to have real OWS that hurt. The fact is we don’t need all we have and all that they control. When the hell are we going to wake up? Happy Vets Day…

    is the fbi squeezing 2 agents to an office yet ? that will make the fbi unmanageable. we cant have that. they must build a new dactagon (10 sided) building, so that there will be a lot of corner offices with views of the potomac. i would have suggested a 20 sided building, but i dont know the word for that. the fbi has so much paper work and reports to fill out, they definitely need a new building. when the fbi builds a new building, will all their field offices be closed and agents be reassigned to the new building ? that would save money too. at least my tax dollars would be spent for a good cause for a change.

    Maybe they need to put more people out in the field instead of in DC. Then they wouldn’t need a larger building — and maybe actually crime instead of just responding to it!

    If the FBI needs more space. Advise them that there is a very large building in New York that would fit their needs. You ask what building. I say the UN Building. It is of no use to us.

    It’s not easy for me to care about this topic, as the FBI won’t be consulting me (or anyone outside of Washington). Basically, the FBI can do this the Washington way, or they can make use of existing facilities or even find a local military base that’s scheduled to be closed.
    I realize that spending and wasting money is a built-in feature of Washington, but since we’re strapped for money – contrary to whatever the Anointed W H Yahoo may say – it is a pure WASTE of money and resources for the FBI to make matters worse by devouring hundreds of more millions.
    They knew the problem existed (it is a problem, isn’t it?). Did they wait too long? Do they care, or are they looking for elected friends – again? I’d go with the idea of a local military base that’s scheduled to be closed. If nothing else, the FBI will have security, and they won’t have to rely on morons who dote on power, money and “friends.”
