Republicans Subpoena White House On Solyndra

Despite an evasive White House and strong Democratic opposition, Republicans on a House Energy and Commerce Committee panel issued subpoenas Thursday for internal White House communications related to a half-billion dollar taxpayer loan guarantee for the failed solar company Solyndra.

According to The Washington Post, the move came after White House officials attempted to avoid subpoenas by voluntarily offering several boxes of emails and other documents related to Solyndra earlier this week.

Many Republicans, skeptical that President Barack Obama may have issued loans to the company to benefit political supporters, say the subpoena is necessary because the long-running investigation has yielded little information as to why the company was provided the loans despite poor performance.

Democrats complained that the broad language of the subpoena might allow Republicans access to the contents of messages from the President’s personal BlackBerry, according to the article.

Department of Energy officials denied any political motive, saying the loan was approved on its merits and that it made sense at the time it was made.

“We’d like to see as much passion in House Republicans for creating jobs as we see in this investigation. The White House has been clear with the committee that we are willing to cooperate with legitimate oversight requests that are tailored to balance the important institutional interests of both branches. We are disappointed that the committee has refused to discuss their requests with us in good faith, and has instead chosen a partisan route, proceeding with subpoenas that are unprecedented and unwarranted,” said a White House spokesman.

      Rman, we’re supposed to overlook that minor detail. You see, The Anointed One can’t be bothered with such trivial matters. He has a country to destroy – er, “save.”
      According to utopian logic, ‘elites’ are above such things, and the mere suggestion that The Anointed One (aka Opraiseme) might do things a mortal would do will NOT be tolerated (it’s not pc). It’s the PRINCIPLE, Rman.
      Of course, that begs the question of whether or not The Anointed One really gives a damn about acting like a president – as opposed to a self-deluded, utopian, progressive, self-loving, poser prez.

        s c, one important detail you and the rest on this thread fail to consider is the fact that China leads the world in the manufacturing of cheap solar panels. Predictably, this would place Solyndra, or any other north-American solar panel manufacturer at a disadvantage, wouldn’t you agree? Further, Solyndra, i would propose, is not the only victim of free-trade, which, btw, was hammered through by previous administrations!

        Can I assume that you know what you can do with your patronizing attitude? First, Solyndra was ITS OWN VICTIM. It was an Obummer vehicle for the W H-engineered, illegal and immoral ‘redistribution of wealth.’
        Second, you have NO basic understanding of free trade. Third, by extrapolation, if you are not a GREENY, you should be. Fourth, stick it.
        Know what you’re talking about before you come to this website to rant and use false approaches to praise The Anointed One. He is part and parcel of the Solyndra deception.

        Was it all a scam? You seem think so, in fact, you speak as an insider, privy to all the necessary information with which to render a verdict. It must be really empowering to have that kind of omniscience. Whatever happened to, innocent until proven guilty? I do believe that at present, Solydra is under investigation, is it not? So why not; hold your horses, re-holster your guns, and shut the hell up? Of course, there’s no need on your behalf to provide us lower mortals with facts to back up your conclusions, wherever you may find them, as that would just confuse us, right? After all, you seem to have it all figured out; Bush was an angel, and Obama is the Anti-Christ, and polly- wana-a-cracker, i get it!

        As far as understanding “free-trade”, i may not be an expert on the subject, but i do know this; since its inception, we have lost hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs, and, no doubt, wait, let me guess, its Obama’s fault, Right?

    This company was so bad that even George Bush wouldn’t approve any money for them. As for solar power as an investment – what were they thinking. In my state we buy power on the open market. We get to see what percentage of each resource the power is created from. Guess what? Solar is the MOST expensive – even more so than nuclear.

      Might have something to do with the fact that for solar to function it requires the use of Rare Earth Minerals,There are no known methods to recycle these and no substituts for them and the fact that China controls 95% of the planets known sources for them!

        It has to do with that and the fact that there are not adequate transmission lines in place for solar. We have all forms here, solar, wind, nuclear, natural gas and geothermal. Geothermal is very expensive to implement in that you have to do some heavy construction when building your house, but for the most part you are off the grid more than on. Why don’t they invest is stuff like that and invest in transmission lines for wind? We are the Saudi Arabia of wind from Texas up through the mid west.

      Yes well…. GM still owes us taxpayers a ton of money yet they just invested in at muti-million dollar plant for engine manufacturing in Mexico. Seems the unions are salivating over third world countries now.

      It never works out when the government gives out loans to private corporations and businesses. They need to stop and let them fail or stand on their own merits. But wait…. if they did that most politicians would loose mega bucks in campaign contributions and insider tips.

Now all business deals whether they succeed or go bad should be investigated and whether under Democrats or Republicans.That is practical accountability for any company or government agency. I don’t look at Solyndra as a bad deal but a good decision that went bad because of the Chinese flooding the market.Several companies in the USA have tanked because of the Chinese market so that seems to be where the focus should be. How do we correct that problem. A Congress that is more alert to what China is up to? More tariffs against China to level the playing field? China has become good at this game and we have failed to out maneuver them.

        eddie… I rarely agree with you, but I believe you are right. All bad business deals need to be held accountable, regardless of who is behind them. If accountability was the standard instead of the exception, it would certainly help clean up some of the mess in Washington.

        e wants us to think he cares about everyone and everything. He’s a utopian, Robin, and that should tell you almost everything you need to know about people like e.
        Good luck in getting him to stick to a topic. He’s a topic bait-and-switcher. His programming won’t let him do anything else. He’ll make sense when Uncle is forced to be accountable (i. e., when hades has a reputation for prime ski resorts).

        Solyndra was a bad deal. The previous administration had turned down the deal because Solyndra was in bad shape. There were internal memos prodicting that Solyndra would fail in the same month that it did fail. China flooding the market was not a new unexpected problem. It has been going on for years. The government should never be in the business of subsidizing businesses, it never works out.

        As long as we are spending above our income and borrowing money (from China) it will be difficult to impossible to put up large tarriffs. The borrower is slave to the lender. If they tell us to stop tariffs, we must or they stop lending and our government shuts down.

        If it was such a bad deal or good deal then why did Bush refuse to do it? His administration stated it was just too risky and left it alone. As for solar – it’s the most expensive form of power and there are no adequate transmission lines to implement it.

        Solar is great and can be very efficient for homes and businesses. Like any power source it shouldn’t be built far away from where it is needed. Miles of transmission lines only dilute the effectiveness even electricity from coal plants.

    All of these “no bid” contracts being thrown around have to be looked at. Blackwater, Halliburton, Boeing, etc. etc. Also the no bid, no questions asked deal that Bush gave to the drug companies has to end. That cost far, far more than this Solyndra deal. As a matter of fact it is one of the reasons we are so far in debt. Bush Jr himself was given many no bid contracts, small business loans (if you call $10′s of millions of dollars small) for companies he bankrupted while hauling in huge exectutive compensation packages before he was elected Gov of Texas. The whole system needs to be scrapped and rebuilt without the wink and handshake of the politicians giving them out for campaign $ and promises of big buck consulting jobs after they leave office.

      This is part of the reason that our military budget is so high. There is what is known as a “most favored vendor” list. If your company is not on it, you can’t even bid on most contracts. Open the bidding process to ALL contractors and suppliers and you will see costs drop DRASTICALLY!! TRUE COMPETITION!!!

    Be careful in your allegations and accusations. Remember the Vietnam era where LBJ became president after the assassination of JFK? To remind you that Lady Bird, LBJ’s wife was the major shareholder of Brown & Root and wonder why so many contracts were awarded to Brown & Root with no questions asked!

      Most believe that LBJ was the cause of JFK’s assignation because of the stance Kennedy had about getting rid of the Federal Reserve. LBJ was by far the MOST corrupt president we have had for as long as most can remember. He was hated in Texas for his dirty politics and he was a foul mouthed idiot, as well as vindictive. JFK hated him but was forced by the powers that be to take him as Vice President.
