House Reaffirms 'In God We Trust'

November 3, 2011 by

House Reaffirms 'In God We Trust'

Last December, Representative Randy Forbes (R-Va.) sent a letter to President Barack Obama correcting the President’s assertion that “E pluribus unum” — the Latin phrase meaning “from many, one” — was the national motto of the United States in a speech at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A portion of the letter reads:

E pluribus unum is not our national motto. In 1956, Congress passed and President Eisenhower approved the law establishing ‘In God We Trust’ as the official national motto of the United States. This motto is also referenced in our national anthem and is engraved on our currency.”

The conflict encouraged Forbes to introduce a House bill that would reaffirm that “In God We Trust” is, indeed, the national motto. On Tuesday, the bill was approved 396-9, with two abstentions, according to The Associated Press.

Representative Jerold Nadler (D-N.Y.) called the bill a “distraction from the nation’s real problems,” but Forbes said the reaffirmation is a fight against a “growing and disturbing pattern of inaccuracy and omissions regarding the motto” and a protection to the country’s history. He said that the Capitol Visitor Center opened in 2008 was “sanitized of any reference to our nation’s motto” in a government effort to remove any mention of God from public domain.

According to The Hill, Obama ripped lawmakers later in the day for their decision to vote on the measure.

“That’s not putting people back to work,” Obama said during a speech about infrastructure. “I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people to work.”

Pacmann, Congress is the House and Senate we have only the House Not the Senate or the Presidancy that leaves us with 1/3 … Senate, Harry Reid blocks all Republican jobs bills that do not comply with Obamas Big spending and government jobs programs…the Republican House has been working on this..keeping in God we Trust is important we lose this we are no Longer the The great America we were meant to be.

  • pacman

What happened to the job creation that the new congress ran on in the last election??? Instead we get the Cantor and Boehner stalling with congressional agenda’s on reaffirming in god we trust and other non-critical agenda items!! What a con by the CONS!! Keep up the good work and the people will reaffirm their approval rating in the next election!!

    • isBubba

@Pacman – Cantor and Boehner have plenty of time to do important things like re-affirm God because they already passed a slew of job-creation bills that the impotent Reid-run Senate refuses or is afraid to even take a vote on.

You saviour, Obutthead, and his Senate crony-meisters have never even produced a budget in the 3 years they’ve been screwing us. Their policies are the cause for the lack of jobs in the first place.

No, they’re down and out in 2012. God won’t save those scoundrels…

      • JUKEBOX

Godless Harry Reid refuses to bring Cantor or Boehner’s House Bills up for a vote in the Senate, because his Fallen Angel told him not to, because he will lose his favored seat in Hell.

      • Joe H.

        JUKEBX,
Save your fingers, friend. I’ve seen too many try to tell them that and not one of these progs here have tried to touch it, let alone answer it!!

  • Mirage

SHOULDN’T THE RIGHT BE CONCENTRATING ON CREATING JOBS? WASN’T JOB CREATION WHAT THEY RAN ON IN NOVEMBER ’10?

VERSUS FOCUSING ALL THEIR ATTENTION ON DEFEATING ABORTION, “IN GOD WE TRUST” ISSUES, AND STONE WALLING THE PRESIDENT ON ALL ISSUES?
THE RIGHT IN POLITICS ARE TACKLING ALL ISSUES BUT JOB CREATION.

    HYPOCRATS.

    • JeffH

      WHY ARE YOU YELLING?

    • isBubba

Obama is a liar. He is not a Christian. There is no denying his actions and words. Whoever still thinks he is Christian after all the evil he has loosed upon this country, has their head in the sand, plain and simple.

As far as the Capitol Visitor Center goes, everyone who visits it should bring some very sticky stickers with them with the words “In God We Trust” printed or written on them. Clandestinely stick them anywhere and everywhere you can. That will put the Anti-God crowd in government in their place.

Without God’s aid, this country would never exist. Without His help, it will never recover from the likes of Obama and his headless henchmen like “Mirage.” Mirage is an untruth…it is not real. God is Truth…He is the author of all that is real.

    • isBubba

      @mirage – “HYPOCRATS”…exactly! Why didn’t I think of that one! :)

I think you meant to say “hypocrites,” but it was just as hilarious as the rest of your comments.

      (or should I say “Hillary-us”)

    • Hank, MO

It will HAVE to be the right that concentrates on jobs if it gets done. Obviously, the leftists can’t and won’t do it. If they were really interested in jobs, Reid and his leftist buddies might try passing at least one of the SIXTEEN jobs bills passed by the right in the House of Reps. during the past year since Nancy Pelosi had the gavel jerked from her hand.

    • Joe H.

      Mirage,
Then why didn’t obummer concentrate on jobs, jobs, and jobs instead of obummer care??? Oh, that’s right, he didn’t want to and you can’t make him. NYA NYA!!

Raised a Christian but realize there is not an atheist in a foxhole, we all pray to our God whom ever or what ever our GOD may be to make things right. But in my upbringing I was told God helps those who help themselves and to have a politician tells me he is speaking in GOD’s name means grab your 782 gear, dig your foxhole and prepare for battle.
Belittle my God, our Constitution and our Oath of office offends me GREATLY.

MGySgt USMC Viet Vet, you have obviously taken your oath seriously. Thank you for your service. Are you familiar with The Oathkeepers?

Obama thinks that he can change, reverse, destroy America’s very principles and foundations for his pure “nonsense”. Do the minnions who follow him know that his “help” for tuition is just $10(?); do they know that the housing help is really “no-help_….. when is this child going to grow up? Or is he a as “chaloo” as Scotland says (sneaky). We all know that God is not a word Obama wants to think about, but whether he likes it or not God has given him the good fortune he enjoys and he should be on bended knee (not prostrate)for this. His KARMA is not going to be pretty. I am glad that the Republicans thought “In God We Trust” had priority. Thank you Republicans.

    • mark

Yes what a courageous bunch they are taking this valiant vote. What strength! What courage! What a crock!

  • Jerry M

Make sure the ones who voted against it won’t still be in office after 2012.

    • mark

I feel the opposite, vote against everyone who wants to turn this country into a theocracy like Iran.

      • Opal the Gem

mark are you as stupid as you are dense? The government acknowledging the existance of God is in no way, form, or fashion an attempt to turn the US into a theocracy. When the government passes a law favoring a specific religion at the expense of all other religions then you have the beginings of a theocracy. I know of no religion as commonaly defined that does not recognize a supreme being (God).

      • mark

Well many members of the Christian Right want to make Christianity the official religion of the United States. I am a Christian, a Catholic actually, and I want my governmnet to stay out of all religious issues, to remain religiously neutral, while granting me and my neighbors the the freedom to practice all of our various religions as we see fit. I also think that given its history, our country trusts more in gold than in God so the phrase seems hypocritical to me.

      • JUKEBOX

You need to be criticizing OBAMA for nearly swallowing his tongue, he was stuttering so bad, when he said “GOD IS FOR HIS JOB PLAN”. That is speaking with a forked Kenyan tongue.

  • mark

These are all nonsense votes, like the ban on flag burning, making the pledge of allegiance mandatory. What nonsense when our country has real problems. It gives more support to Samuel Johnson’s assertion that “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” Next they’ll pass a resolution on Mom and Apple Pie as central to American culture and then pat themselves on the back for their tremendous leglislative courage. No wonder Congress’ appoval rating is 9%.

    • Jerry M

Our country was built on the idea of Belief in God so why are so against it. Could it be, you don’t?

    • http://Personalliberty LJ Cap

@Mark, you seem misguided, The loss of what our founding fathers intended by building a country based on the acknowledgement of God is in a large part what is bringing our country down. This is a manuver tried many times over by Progressive Socialist/Marxist in the slow erosion of morals and values of a country. We have had this happening in an aggressive push from the 60′s, infiltration of schools, the E PA regulations, entitlements & government controlls.. These stem from an acceptance of the removal of God as standard. We are a Country of many religions and many understandings of their “God” …. Keep this and we will not become an Iran take it away and we will. As you, maybe are aware of the infiltration of radical Islam & Shuria is here, we are living with judges ruling in our USA that Shuria is acceptable on our soil..we are at a tipping point that you welcome??

      • mark

You’ve got a problem with your historical analysis here. In God We Trust was never used in the United States from 1776 until 1956 when Eisenhower and the Congress caught up in the fear and paranoia of the Cold War against “godless” Communism passed this ridiculous motto. So if God was so central to our republic why was this phrase NOT on our currency for the FIRST ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY YEARS of our nation? This was also true with the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. This phrase was not in the original pledge written in 1892 but was only added in 1954 during the height of Cold War paranoia against the atheist Soviets.

      • http://Personalliberty LJ Cap

@Mark, I didn’t feel it was necessary and had a suspicion you’d interject..a history lesson. I understand your reasoning in regard to “In God We Trust” I just find your reasoning to not be benificial at this time for Our nation founded as “One Nation Under God” a quote from Abraham Lincoln. Here In its entirety: “we have been the the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven” To be born in a land of freedom, to live in a nation founded as “Ine Nation Under God” by those who hold the one true God of the Bible, is both a tremendous privilege and a great responsibility. As I said in an earlier post & you chose to ignor to make a point I was already aware of..Our reality Now is that the Morality & Values of our Country have been and are being compromised, by the Progressive Lefts agenda of the 60′s the systematic dismantling of our rights and freedoms is in high gear…Obama and his Marxist cronies and their lies and double speak to

      • http://Personalliberty LJ Cap

Double speak to turn our country into a Godless immoral society run by repression guised under the banner of entitlements, Social Justice, welfare and that we just don’t know, they’re all knowing… Is that why sharia is allowed by some Judges here on USA soil… My take it that you’re a Progressive Liberal & if so end of discussion..

      • eddie47d

One thing Mark got right is that Conservatives are pushing fear and paranoia to achieve their agenda just like they did back in the 50′s. I just wish that Congress and private enterprise would get the ball rolling on jobs. Knock Knock is anybody home?

      • Jay

Eddie, i would change the label “Conservatives” to just plain politicians, or mongrels. Today’s so-called Conservatives don’t deserve that label!

Only problem with this motion is that the very ones in Washington who voted for it are not following it. If they trusted in GOD, then they would not be allowing abortion, homosexuality, greed, and all the rest of the stuff that is tearing our country apart to happen. The worst problem in this country is exactly that there is no fear of GOD anymore. If my people will turn from their evil and repent and call on my name then I will hear and heal their land. That is what GOD tells us to do. America, if we do not repent of our evil ways and continue along like we are then we will be judged by GOD. All of us sinners in this country need to understand that this is the only way that our country will survive. This is what every church in the land should be screaming as loud as they can. Our President should be saying this, other Presidents in the past called for a National Day of Prayer to seek out GOD’s will when the country was in peril.

    • jeanelane

You are so right. But too bad, the word “God” means absolutely nothing to most people in this country, no matter what the motto is. They are their own ‘god’. And that is why . . . . .

  • EdinNola

Jerold Nadler: The number ONE problem in this country is absolutely reflected in this argument. The problem we face is a continued growth of Communist influence in our government and the country generally. Communists and their fellow travelers still number less that 30% of the nation, so I hope and pray that this influence is severely reduced at the next election, and effectively Communists / Progressives driven from this country.

It is interesting that our nation’s motto “In God We Trust” was omitted from the new George Washington dollar coin that government is currently minting. We all should protest this omission by not accepting the coins…..ask for paper dollars instead.

    • jeanelane

@Jay Hoglund – You are so wrong. This misinformation has been going around the internet for a long time. Look it up. Check it out. Have you seen a dollar coin and actually examined it? I understand that the motto is on the edge. I have not actually seen a dollar coin. They are not in wide circulation and I don’t make many purchases with cash. Maybe I’ll ask the bank for one the next time I go.

      • Joe H.

        jeanelane,
I collect coins and the motto is, indeed on the edge!! They were gonna take it off and such a stink was raised they left it on.

      • Joe H.

I also forgot to add that there were a few hundred that were mis-stamped that didn’t have it BY MISTAKE!!

    • mark

I don’t want to live in a theocracy. Eliminate all references to God and religion in all publically funded endeavors. Everyone can and should worship as they please; this is a private choice. But don’t get the government involved in it. “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,” might be a better motto. A whole lot closer to the truth.

      • Hank, MO

You have a choice as to where you live, Mark, but in this country, we choose “In God We Trust” as the nation’s motto. Live with it or not– we don’t care about where you live.

      • http://www.mindopenwhy.org MindOpenWhy

That’s the “True American” spirit there…believe as I do, otherwise go live somewhere else…

(that was sarcasm, just for the record)

I really think it is wonderful to see the various affirmations of faith that some here have expressed. This, to me is part of the beauty of living in a free country. You get to experience the deep devotion that different people have to different causes and ideas. And that was NOT sarcasm, but a sincere expression of my appreciation for the freedom of religious expression in it’s many forms that we have the priveledge to enjoy in this country.

The right of public individual religious expression, and the right to abstain from any type of religious expression are both of equal weight in this country.

What purpose does it serve to belittle the “other guy”, that is the one who believes differently than us?

Was this the way of Christ?

Did he preach to His followers “Belittle those that believe not as you do”?

But the sentiment expressed in suggesting that someone should leave the country if they don’t have the same religious beliefs as you?

Perhaps it was intended as a “joke” but it hardly seems like a respectful way to treat a fellow American, regardless of how deeply you may differ on your religious beliefs or opionions about this topic.

So let me ask you, can you have a conversation with someone of differing beliefs or opinions and still treat them with dignity and respect?

To me, the ability to do just that, to respect and live at peace with those who believe differently than you, is at the heart of what being American is all about.

There is nothing I find more distasteful and un-American than the suggestion that someone who believes differently than I do, has any less right to live in this great country.

We may have differing beliefs, but we should be standing shoulder to shoulder when it comes to defending each others rights to freedom of religion and freedom of expression.

Why would we want it any other way? Do we want people to freely chose their belief? Or have belief imposed on them?

“Let those who thirst come” seems like an invitation, not an order.

Where in the Bible does Jesus ever call on the government or current authorities to sanction his belief in God? He lived in a climate that was highly hostile to his teachings, under religious and government authority that opposed him, and yet, he was one of the most highly successful preachers of all time (some might say the most succesfull but who am I to make that call, to each his own).

I fail to see how official sanction of belief in God by the government makes that belief any more powerful for those that choose to believe.

Who do you put your faith in? Ceasar? Or God?

Stop putting our trust in a government(and central bank), that has botched up our lives so bad that I wonder why we trust them even a little bit.

      Maybe the paddy wagon…OR…maybe not!

As I was out for my daily walk on this beautiful autumn day, I began to ponder the state of affairs
and just what the president… Mr. Obama might now be thinking? The jig, as it were, is just about up and Veteran’s Day “draweth nigh”. That’s THE day when Vets and indeed many angry Americans will be marching on Washington to display their extreme anger and disgust of government in general and of the president in particular. Make no mistake… Obama knows it and I am sure that because of it, he is a very desperate man. History teaches that desperation can indeed make mortal men do desperate things. And such a time is now at hand.

If you were Obama and you knew “the jig was up” and that the paddy wagon might soon be coming for you and your cronies, would you not be thinking as to how you might avert this eventuality and perhaps, how to avoid it altogether? What IF? What if some great and catastrophic event were to occur? Something along the lines of 9/11 in magnitude…maybe even bigger. Some event that would allow you to seize absolute control and to declare a state of martial law: whereupon you would in effect, assume dictatorial powers and suspend habeas corpus, the rule of law and all personal freedoms. Including the right to criticize the government. Indeed, such criticism might be construed by “government” as a treasonable act in and of itself. Certainly this would at least for a time, postpone the arrival of the paddy wagon, for you and your cronies. A partial reprieve from the inevitable and one last chance to hold onto the reigns of power… at whatever the cost. And make no mistake; the cost would be… could be, very high indeed. But what if… ?

      • Hank, MO

@SHAWN– It might delay the arrival of the paddy wagon, Shawn, but it would assure the arrival of the firing squad!

  • Dave

As in sports when things are headed down-hill, it’s time to get back to basics. Re-affirming our national motto for the likes of Obama is critical, to show that we haven’t forgotten that we DO trust in Jesus Christ, that he and his word are the reason and the foundation of our country and our way of life and that from this foundation is our exceptionalism both in our founding documents and in our Hope and Change. That Hope is in Him and that Change comes from what he has done and will do for all who put their trust in Him.

    • jeanelane

Sorry Dave. Our motto says nothing about Jesus Christ. Most everything else you have written is oh so true. But Jesus Christ and U.S.A.? No.

      • SHAWN T. CARSON

You are so right. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST could equally apply to Muslims as well as Satanists: there is no inference to Christ at all. Ask any Muslim if they trust their God: they will reply in the affirmative. Ask the same of a Satanist of their God Lucifer and they too will reply in the affirmative. So is that enough to affirm a belief in God? Not really since I am sure most on the planet believe in some form of god/deity. Perhaps they should have made the ultimate declaration… IN CHRIST WE TRUST or some such motto. Cause the IN GOD WE TRUST is just too darned generic and falls far short of what we really mean; which is that our faith in Christ Jesus is what we place our eternal trust in. Why could they not have affirmed that?

      • Jana

        Good point!

      • Karolyn

Are you serious? That would be a blatant slap in the face to all non-Christians, who do, by the way, make up a sizeable portion of our population.

      • SHAWN T. CARSON

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” President John Adams.
Adams was no fool as evidenced by this quotation: I happen to agree with his sentiment The Constitution was designed to fit a particular body of men and women: people who escaped the oppression and corruption of the Old World to setup a new form of government never before seen upon the earth in two millenia. That government, guided by those principles, has worked very well for over two hundred years: until moral and spiritual decay has resulted in a country that has to a very great degree, turned its back on God and what the founders truly believed and practiced.

Ah yes, another atheist waste of space. Where do you think this country gets its morals, ethics, and freedoms from? You have to look no farther than the Bible, God, and Jesus. Reaffirming this motto is critical at this time when there is such an amazing effort by ” Un Americans” to take the very basics away from us. God is not just a basic, but an absolute to our survival as Americans.

    • Ellen

Earl, I agree. Removing faith from our lives has not been a good strategy for our country. Obama blasted Republicans for this reaffirmation as if it was a partisan ploy, yet all but 9 representatves voted for it. That’s a bipartisan miracle. Instead of pointing out that reps do agree on some things, he criticized it. It is most likely because he considered this a slap in his face for his error. He can’t take criticism.

Are you kidding? The vote was totally political. Don’t you think that no matter where they stand, the congressmen aren’t going to worry about an issue like this? They had to vote for it or be labeed un-American, Godless, atheist or whatever. they had to follow the herd no matter what their true feelings.

      • JUKEBOX

This was a totally “BI-PARTISAN” vote, and that’s what the man/child has been begging for. Now that he got what he wanted, he complains. Can you spell “DUPLICITOUS”?

      • http://naver samurai

This is easy. You have faith removed from your life by not believing in the thing or person you have faith in. Just look at all the weinner atheists on this site. They were probably Christians before, but look at them now. Enough said. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

      • Karolyn

I repeat, that is up to the individual, and nobody can TAKE somebody’s faith from them.

What a crock of patriotic pablum. As if this nonsense will do anything to solve our problems. And oh yes we have to watch out for those evil UnAmericans. Make yourself at home, Mr. McCarthy. Welcome to the New Amerika.

      • jeanelane

Mark, you are right. This will not solve our problems. The only thing that WILL solve our problems is the acknowledgement of GOD as GOD. We have each gone our own way and created ourselves as god. But saying outright lies, like Obama has, needs to be brought attention to.

      • mark

OK but there is not a human being alive nor one who has ever lived who has not at sometime in their life told outright lies. Actually I stand corrected there was one. His name was Jesus Christ. Everyone else has been a liar and a sinnner at some time in their lives. I know I have certainly been both. If you think you will ever have a President of the United States or any political leader who will not sometime of his career tell a lie you are living in a fantasy world. Human beings lie, cheat, steal, sin, and fornicate. And all politicians are human beings. In fact as Will Rogers once said when asked if politicians were liars, thieves, tax cheats, skirt chasers, crooks, and rascals. He said: “Yes, and they represent a good cross section of the electorate.” In that answer Rogers summed up the state of humanity. It has never changed and never will change no matter how many sermons, masses, and morality campaigns are held across the world. Man is fallen and this is his predicament. We can certainly try to improve and most of us do. But history has shown that leaders are fallible human beings. Were the fantasy Weapons of Mass Destruction an outright lie by President Bush that cost the lives of 5000 Americans and 200,000 Iraqis in the Iraq War? Probably or maybe they were a failure of intelligence. To the 205,000 dead and their families, I doubt that it matters either way.

      • Tim Halpin

@Mark At the end of the first gulf war Sadam (Can’t spell his last name and don’t feel like looking it up) Gassed the Kurds killing whole villages. Gas is a weapon of mass destruction. He had gas at one time. It might still be there some place. We just didn’t find it.

Health Care reform has been an issue since President Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 campaigned for a health insurance industry. In 1946 the term “Socialized Medicine” was born when the AMA,the AHA, American Bar Association, Chamber of Commencer fought President Trumann reform effort. The Health Industry was lobbing to the tune of 380 million a month during the debate on health care reform. My final thought on that debate is time well spent. It’s to bad the single payer option was killed

      • TheBigG

Sir, First, I must say, thank you for your service to this country.
Then I might add to that, while you go to the local Vets Hospital for care would you consider it one that provides excellent services, or one of the many that just shines you on and gets you out the door as soon as possible ONCE you have seen a lead nurse or doctor.? I have issue with a national health care program for a few reasons: One, personal choice, I have to pay for something that I do not believe in, and will not use. I believe in alternative medicines, this cut, chop, and pray it works program is not in my best interest. Second, the government has had nothing but hit and miss at helping and tending to our vets over the last many many years with the veteran hospitals. Before I get on a soap box and really make a point of this, (if you have not already gotten one), I will say this, you put your life on the line for my freedom to choose what I want, and I should not have to pay for something that is not beneficial to me.
Now on the original posting of the reaffirmation of the USA Motto, mabe we as a nation need to get back and shore up the basics before we can get a handle on the real issues facing this government, like over spending, and grandstanding. I say we vote all new blood in and get the slackers and the old timers who have lost track of WHY they are in office out of there. I find that sometimes a walk outside to get fresh air is good to reset the thoughts that we not coming the way you wanted them to.. maybe this is the type of “break” for a moment that congress needed to get their buts on track and start thinking of more than just themselves. It is evident they d**n sure do NOT think of the people who put them in office nor the people who still are paying taxes.

      • Joe H.

        SMSgtZ,
If you think government run Healthcare is so good perhaps you should check into the scandle at Brecksville vets hospital near Cleveland Ohio a few years back. Short version, they had a quadraplegic in there that the nurses would bring in his food tray and just walk out. for a couple of days they scolded him for not eating!! Another vet in a wheelchair would come in after that and feed him, but was chased out after a few days. One of the local news networks came in and placed a camera innthe room to catch it going on. Imagine that, SCOLDING A QUADRAPLEGIC MAN FOR NOT FEEDING HIMSELF!! Fantastically inept healthcare is what it is!! I could go there to get my care but thanks but no thanks!!

      • http://www.mindopenwhy.org MindOpenWhy

I’m just curious what sort of “God” is this that you believe in?

The mere acts of men can “take God out of our halls of freedom” and put him in a “LOCKBOX”?

Sounds like a “god” perhaps, but certainly not the “God” described in the Bible.

This is why Jesus never requested or endorsed official sanction from the government. He believed in an all powerful God, and niether needed the actions of men to affirm that God’s power, nor feared their actions to hinder God.

The arguments from within the Bible (and within Christian history) are much stronger against government sanctioning of any religious belief. The government of a nation of people consisting of both “believers” and “non-believers” should be neutral when it comes to belief in God. It should neither endorse nor disallow any individual from making a public expression of their belief or disbelief. If the government being neutral about belief in God (taking no stance for or against religious belief of any kind) somehow “removes God” or in any other way diminishes the power of this “God” in your life, perhaps one should ask what sort of “God” they have placed their faith in.

I have no objection to people chosing to believe in God. But if you are going to bother believing in the God of the Bible, well then believe! I may chose to believe differently, but I will gladly challenge those who say they believe to consider a more robust belief in what they believe.

Peace to all regardless of your belief, and here’s to hoping we can continue to respect one another while discussing this relevant topic.

But let’s not lose too much time on it…while we’re distracted with this one important matter the country is being stolen right out from under our noses (and those who are doing the stealing are more than happy to see us asleep at the gate distracted with other things).

First, tho it has been quite a number of years, I do thank you for
      your service in Vietnam.
You fought for we the people of this country along with the beliefs of
many people and what this cuntry stands for. One of those was freedom
of Religion. While Religion has nothing to do with the national motto
“In God We Trust”. it does have a special meaning to a lot of people,
I feel it was money and time well spent. There are numerous organizations in this country that are attempting to put God
aside and are trying to force their beliefs on the rest of the nation,
even though they are in the minority. since even our President was not
aware of these words being our National Motto, it not only affirms to
our President but also brings it to the mind of the people the very fact that WE TRUST IN GOD. Yes, we desperately need jobs, but as long
as those who are now in Congress, it will never be done. They do not
like our present President and will work any way they can to see that
he does not succeed. In doing so, we, the people, are the losers.

      • Hank, MO

We are NOT the losers, Patti. This man’s success diminishes this nation, and I believe that is his intent. Thus, anything the Congress can do to stymie his success is, by definition, profitable to the country.

“An American is sombody who respects and upholds the laws of this country?”

No, an American is one who respects and upholds the laws of this country when they truly serve the purpose of freedom and justice.

A true American will stand up and fight against the laws of this country when they become unfair and unjust, or only serve the purpose of benefiting the lawmakers and those that fund their election campaigns and won’t just stand idly by out of “loyalty”.

“Who builds this country up in the eyes of the rest of the world.”

Yes, when the country or it’s representatives are acting justly and honorably. But when those that represent this country do things that are against human freedom and dignity, a true American will gladly denounce those actions even if some will claim they are being “un-American”.

“Somebody who is willing to fight for his or her country.”

You just again forgot to add ‘when the cause is just’. No one should blindly fight for this country without first asking some hard questions.

“Somebody who respects our election laws.” …when they are fair and just. If what’s on the books isn’t fair and just do we just sit idly by?

“Somebody who is Proud to be an American, and supports the American way of life which is Capitalism, and a free market society.”

Somebody who is proud to be an American, and supports the American way of life which is liberty and justice for ALL and respects the United States Constitution. I sure hope Capitalism is not the defining element of the American way of life. Capitalism is a valuable tool, when it is used well within a free society, but when the rights of corporations (those with the Capital) becomes more important than the rights of individuals (those whom the Capital is meant to serve) then we have a problem.

You need to read up on your history of how past American leaders (including said founding fathers) viewed with caution the forces of a free wheeling under regulated market. “Free markets” without proper restraints (regulations) will always lead to abuse by the few at the expense of the many and our forefathers knew this and took great pains to keep those forces at bay. Unfortunately, recent times have seen their fears start to become reality.

We’d better fear free market wealth hoarders who own the government, just as much as we would fear communist or socialist dictators who rule with an iron fist, or theocratic rulers who do the same. All of the above will gladly trample or tamper with the Constitution in order to protect the status quo.

True Americans had better wake up and stop all the infighting. We have to show the world that we are better than those who feign to be our “representatives”. When are we going to wake up and stop fighting each other and see who our true common enemy is?

      • JeffH

Such the hypocrit. You talk of the government wasting time and money on something so frivilous(your opinion)…I have a few names to mention about that…Charlie Rangel, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds!

Rangel violated numerous House rules and federal laws and his punishment was swift. He was censured by his peers.

Let’s compare Rep. Rangel’s “punishment” to the Federal Government’s perjury cases brought by the United States Department of Justice against two former baseball players – Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens.

Bonds was indicted from testimony made 8 years ago and a case filed over 4 years ago – so much for the Sixth Amendment and a right to a speedy trial! Bonds perjury charges relate to the use of “the cream” and “the clear:, two chemicals which were not deemed controlled substances by the FDA and therefore not illegal at the time of Bonds purported usage, Bonds is actually being charged with lying about taking legal substances. What punishment does Bonds face if he is convicted or perjury? Thirty years in prison!

Roger Clemens was indicted on August 19, 2010 on charges of perjury related to his statements that he never used performance-enhancing drugs. What punishment will Clemens face if convicted of perjury? Up to thirty years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, but most likely a 15 to 21 month sentence in federal prison.

Charlie Rangel has lied to Congress and committed perjury, what consequences will he bear beyond the censure, reprimand or maybe even less than that – a mere slap on the wrist and a strongly worded “ don’t do it again” letter or speech from the floor? Meanwhile, two others who dared defend themselves and face the federal government’s unlimited budget and manpower at great personal financial cost (Rangel has the cojones to whine that he has been forced to spend money in his defense!) could go to jail for up to thirty years!

FYI, the request that perjury charges be filed against Clemens and Bonds were bi-partisan. Talk of frivlous waste of money! Nuff said!

The idea that congress would charge anyone with lying is the epitome of hypocricy.

Could it be that they, in fact, deal with our problems with our unemployment in a substantive, fiscally sound and sustainable manner? He certainly can’t allow anything like that to be brought to light, can he?

It’s about time we have reps that actually go with the majority, not the few that want to change US.

    • eddie47d

Actually it was only a few who decided to put In God We Trust on our coinage. That took almost 100 years to accomplish and E Pluribus Unum was accepted as our original Motto before they changed it. Both are fine with me but it was placed on coins by a hand full of those pushing the red scare issue in 1956. There was no vote or popular consensus which only proves that anyone can have their agenda placed in public. Many individuals, politicians or groups push their agenda so is that right? I am only showing that it does happen and not crusading against it or our Motto.

      • Captain Mike

oooooooooooooooooh, the Red Scare. What a bunch of dolts. Who could believe there are Communists and Marxists trying to infiltrate our political system and destroy our country.

      • Hank, MO

Eddie, I keep seeing this “red scare” phrase as if it was such a silly thing to be afraid of world domination by the communists. The 38 million or so victims of Stalin probably would not think of it as a silly thing if they were still alive; the 70 million or so who were victims of Mao probably wouldn’t agree either. I remember the Cuban Crisis, and if you think people weren’t ‘red scared’ at that time (and for damned good reason), then you must be one naive little puppy. The ‘red scare’ was legitimate and cost this nation thousands of lives and billions of dollars to combat. It’s my opinion that you and your “comrades” should not pooh-pooh that threat for we have not likely seen the last of it. Such light treatment of such an extremely dangerous threat leads me to believe that those so treating it may be part of that threat, slyly and cunningly creeping toward my foxhole.

      • Joe H.

        Hank, MO,
I think a few million cambodians and Vietnamese would agree with you!!!

      • http://www.mindopenwhy.org MindOpenWhy

No one questions that a healthy fear of being ruled by communist nations is a good thing. We should all have a healthy concern about being ruled by a government that decides what is best for us and uses force to get its way.

What was wrong with the red scare was the tendency for people to jump to conclusions and label people as “marxist” or “communist” without having any proof that such a thing was the case (hmm, like some comments here?).

Democracy can’t function when people just scream derogatory terms at those who don’t agree with them, regardless of the issue, and how “right” each side is certain they are about it.

Democracy functions when people truly listen to one another, respect one another, and treat each other as adults who have the right to chose their own path.

And this includes the choice of whether or not to believe in God or not – this is a choice that is a fundamental human right.

I’m pretty sure that derogatory language, name calling, and other tactics that attempt to belittle the other person are not going to be effective at convincing anyone that your “way of believing” is any better.

“You will know them by their fruits”. Name calling, jumping to conclusions, and failing to be those basic respectful people our parents expected us to grow up to be – these all seem to be rotten fruits in my opinion.

You want a strong country where freedom is cherished? Don’t look to the government – look to yourself. Act like a responsible adult and treat your fellow citizens with the respect and dignity that they deserve – regardless of whether they believe the same or differently than you.

If you need the government to sanction your belief in God then you are like the man who built his house on the sand, and when the rains come and the winds pound, your house will crumble.

As for Jesus, he never appealed to the authorities to sanction his faith. He already had the ultimate authority on his side. What need did he have for government sanction of his faith? Why should any person today who truly believes in the same God that Jesus put his faith in (and was depending upon your particular brand of theology) need any government to officially sanction that belief?

You put your faith where you want to. I’ll put mine where I want to.

True but I don’t like religions using the law either.
Religions differ but all believe they are correct and some use the law to enforce their beliefs to varying and sometimes severe degrees.
I believe in God too but even if I didn’t the motto is good.
In my study of the constitution I found that ‘In God We Trust’ refers to the rights we possess, the freedoms.
One thing that makes America great is that our freedoms are ‘God Given’ as opposed to ‘King Ordained’. ‘We The People’ don’t have to pay or ask any other man for our freedoms.

This coming from a man that had a child of his aborted before it was born? Here is something you should know.

In God We Trust: The Motto
One of the first found references of the motto “In God We Trust” is heard in the U.S. National Anthem, THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER. The song was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and later adopted as the national anthem. In the last stanza Key writes a variation of the phrase “…And this be our motto: In God is our trust. And the Star Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave, O’er that land of the free and the home of the brave.” The words were shortened to In God We Trust and first applied to U.S. coins in 1864.

In God We Trust: The History
The U.S. Department of Treasury states “the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, Urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins. From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Reverand M.R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania. As a result, Secretary Chase instructed James Pollock, Director of the Mint at Philadelphia, to prepare a motto, in a letter dated November 20, 1861:

“Dear Sir: No nation can be strong except on the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins. You will cause a device to be prepared without unnecessary delay with a motto expressing in the fewest and tersest words possible this national recognition. It was found that the Act of Congress dated January 18, 1837, prescribed the mottoes and devices that should be placed upon the coins of the United States.”

Pollock suggested “Our Trust Is In God,”"Our God And Our Country,”"God And Our Country,”"God Our Trust.” Chase picked “In God We Trust” to be used on some of the government’s coins. The first time “In God We Trust” appeared on our coins was in 1864 on the new two cent coin, and by 1909 it was included on most the other coins. During the height of the Cold War, on July 11, 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law 140 making it mandatory that all coinage and paper currency display the motto.

In God We Trust: The Foundation
American history demonstrates repeatedly that the nation was founded on Christian principles and its founding fathers wished to acknowledge that fact all over Washington D.C. buildings, in official documents, and historical speeches. Less than a hundred years after its Declaration of Independence, In God We Trust was proclaimed on its coins. America is a free nation, and freedom of religion is still guaranteed in the Constitution’s First Amendment.

        FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

      • Edward

The motto “In God We Trust” was added to coinage in 1861, just in time for the Civil War. I am offended that the politicians of the time used God for propaganda and the hope that He would help them defeat the Confederacy just because His name was added to the coinage. President Eisenhower added “In God We Trust” to all coinage and paper currency in the 1950s. The Soviets were “Godless” so it was a propaganda stunt to differentiate the US from the Soviets. This current reaffirmation of the motto is just like the events of the 1860s and 1950s and contrary to Matthew 6:1. Perhaps behaving and thinking more like a Christian would be more effective than a motto written on money. The meaning and sincerity of our actions is far more important than empty words.
When the Bible says “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” Why would we put God’s name on money and seek His approval?

      • http://naver samurai

      • JeffH

mark, mark the Marxist speaks once again. You can always draw a line through the phrase on your own money if you don’t like it.

Just the idea that this was a victory for people who care about this country and morality over those who don’t is galling to some of you liberals.

The phrase was conceived by Salmon P. Chase, the U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln. Believing that no “nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins” wrote Chase in a letter to James Pollock, the Director of the Mint in Philadelphia. “In God We Trust” has appeared on U.S. coins since 1864 and on paper currency since 1957.

In Zorach v. Clauson (1952), the Supreme Court has also held that the nation’s “institutions presuppose a Supreme Being” and that government recognition of God does not constitute the establishment of such a state church as the Constitution’s authors intended to prohibit. Constitutionalists object to sworn judiciaries employing historical context in what they believe ought to be a raw textual interpretation.
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_God_We_Trust

The phrase has did not appear on all coins until 1938. And the law that it must be on all coins and currency went into effect in 1956 at the height of the Red Scare against those atheist Soviets. But since it is already in law why reaffirm it. Don’t they have anything else to do in Congress with their time but reaffirm already existing laws? Also if Salmon P. Chase, a Lincoln appointee, first introduced this phrasing on coinage shouldn’t the law be revoked on principle ALONE? After all, as everyone who reads this blog knows, Lincoln was the greatest tyrant in American History! His printing of paper money began the long downward slide that has now destroyed America! On this fact alone, I say we strike the phrase from all U.S. money. It’s the patriotic thing to do.

There are already enough laws that are not enforced.
        Many need to be reaffirmed.

        mark,
Id recommend they strike your brain, but with something that SMALL, that would take too much time away from congress!! Plus, they would have to find and identify it!!
