Airline Fees Hit $1.5 Billion In Three-Month Span

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) — A three-month take for luggage and changed-reservation fees for the U.S. airline industry was $1.5 billion, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics said.
For April, May and June, the statistics office said, the largest airlines in the country took in 1 percent more than they did in the second quarter of 2010 and 8.5 percent more than the first quarter of the year, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Other fees, such as fees for drinks, extra leg room, pillows, snacks, or early boarding privileges, are not made public, except in hard-to-tease-apart reporting categories.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed a reporting system that would break down fees into 16 categories, but the airline industry has opposed the idea, the Times said.
