Sales Climb Beyond Expectations

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 (UPI) — Retail sales rose more than twice the rate expected from August to September, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Friday.
Retail sales, including food service sales, adjusted for seasonal variations but not for prices, rose 1.1 percent to reach $395.5 billion, up 1.1 percent from the previous month.
Economists expected sales to grow 0.5 percent, after coming in flat in July to August.
For September, sales were 7.9 percent higher than September 2010, the bureau said in a release.
Gasoline station sales rose 1.2 percent month-to-month and rose 20.3 percent from 12 months earlier. Motor vehicle sales, including automobile parts, rose 3.6 percent from August and 8.5 percent from August 2010.
Non-store sales, which include Internet commerce and catalog sales, rose 0.7 percent from a month earlier and 10.1 percent from a year earlier.
