Yes raw milk contains milk sugars. But raw milk also contains a full complement of enzymes and lactase-producing bacteria the body needs to break down and assimilate milk sugar lactose. These are killed when the milk is pasteurized and homogenized. Many people who are lactose intolerant can tolerate raw milk, but not all.

I don’t recall saying that no one should drink cows milk. I just said that milk contained the sugar lactose and some people do not produce the lactase enzyme.

Causes
Lactose intolerance occurs when the small intestine does not produce enough of an enzyme called lactase. Your body needs lactase to break down, or digest, lactose (the sugar found in dairy products).

Genetics
One’s genes can play a key role in being able to consume dairy product without symptoms. One’s genetic make-up dictates if his or her body can produce enough lactase enzyme, an enzyme the body needs to break down dairy products. Many ethnic cultures are in fact more likely to be lactose intolerant because their diets call for low lactose intake. Over generations, these ethnic groups don’t pass on the enzyme to break down dairy because they aren’t consuming dairy.

Me, my brothers, and all our friends were raised on raw milk in the 50s and 60s. No one died.

Combat Seabee has a point about raw milk. As I also have grown up on a farm with milk cows I agree that raw milk is safe to consume. But we on the farm also know when it is fresh and kept refridgerated. We also would have to get our milk cows certified by a veternarian to sell or consume the product. Therefore it is fresh and safe to consume. When it gets old we would discard it. I was watching a 20/20 type show that exposed the lack of refrigeration and freshness in our food transportation. Reefers (refridgerated semi trucks) not being turned on. Perishable food in semi trailers standing to be unloaded for hours, unsafe temperature levels in transport, etc. The industry does not keep close enough attention or control on the products you and I consume and bacteria etc. enter our food chain.

I grew up drinking raw milk and it is fine. Not sure why more americans do not have a cow in their back yard along with chickens and a few goats. they would eliminate the need to mow the lawn. I have been really surprised that the EPA has not eliminated the use of mechanized lawn mowers.

What about shelf life for dairy products within a supermarket? Can whole fresh milk stay safe from lets say salmonella while sitting in a grocery cooler and for how long?

I am allergic to cow’s milk, so I grew up on goat’s milk and (Yuckee) soya milk. Of course this would be illegal in Wisconsin since the goats belonged to my uncle who was also allergic to cow’s milk. His goats were cleaned, and the equipment for milking sterilized after each milking. I can’t stand the goats milk they sell in stores today. It tastes terrible. Should rules be relaxed on milk and dairy products for personal consumption? Yes I believe so as long as there is a disclaimer on the product that you eat or drink and do so at your own risk. The same with any food,beer,vitamins(herbal)that you grow or consume on your own or are willing to sell. Like any product buyer beware and it should be packaged to say so. We had a Listeria outbreak in this country and 20 have died and about 200 are still sick so will those farmers take responsibility for making one sick if they allow someone to consume a bad product? Pasteurized/Homogenized products should remain in all supermarkets to protect the consumer and the business.

If the farmers are responsible for the listeria outbreak then maybe car makers should be responsible for all traffic accidents, ladder makers should be responsible for everyone who falls off, liquor distillers should be responsible for every drunk..well, you get the idea. I do not believe in willful negligence but I often wonder where these food borne outbreaks really originate. Obviously, the listeria didn’t grow on the food. Who put it there? That is what we need to ask. I also think, before we go hog wild finger pointing at the farmer’s responsibility to protect the consumer, we need to assess actual risk. The three things I mentioned cause FAR more deaths than tainted lettuce, milk, melons, etc. Yet the government isn’t pulling out all the stops to “protect” us from those evils. Look at legal drugs and our hospital care. How many deaths are caused by those entities. Is anyone shutting them down?
