Auto Sales Strong In September

DETROIT, Oct. 3 (UPI) — Two of three U.S. automakers said sales rose at least 20 percent in September from a year ago, while Ford Motor Co. said its increase was less dramatic.
General Motors Co., Chrysler Group LLC and Nissan Motor Co. each had robust gains above 20 percent from September 2010, while sales at Ford rose 8.9 percent, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
“People have come back to the market,” GM sales chief Don Johnson said.
On their minds, he said, is the age of their vehicles, which now average 10.7 years old, he said.
For all three U.S. automakers, gains in light truck sales far outpaced gains in car sales. At GM, light truck sales rose 34 percent year-to-year. At Chrysler, they rose 33 percent. At Ford, sales of light trucks rose 22.3 percent, while car sales dropped 2.3 percent.
At GM and Chrysler, car sales rose 12 percent.
With dealerships eager to clear their showrooms of old models near the end of the year, discounts rose 3.9 percent in September to an average of $2,716 from $2,615 in August, Truecar.com reported.
“September sales were great, both on the new and used side. The rest of the year is shaping up to be very strong,” Sam Slaughter, president of Farmington Hills, Mich., dealer Sellers Buick GMC, told the Journal.
