The United Warfare/Welfare States Of America

America is a warfare/welfare state.

In fiscal year 2010, the Federal government spent $3.5 trillion. Warfare and welfare made up the vast bulk of the spending.

About 20 percent of that $3.5 trillion — $705 billion — went to defense and “security-related” international activities. That’s governmentspeak for nation-destroying/woman- and-child-killing-bombing/nation-building/installing-dictators-friendly-to-the-U.S.-and-paying-them-to-oppress-their-people-in-the-phony-war-on-terror activities. Out of that $705 billion, about $170 billion financed the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq (see above).

(As an aside: The war in Iraq has been going on for 21 years, the war in Afghanistan for almost 10. Perpetual war is the norm.)

Social Security received another 20 percent of the spending pie. About $707 billion went for retirement benefits for 34.6 million workers and 19.5 million spouses and children of retired workers, surviving children and spouses of deceased workers and disabled workers and their dependents.

Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) consumed about 21 percent of the budget, or $732 billion.

Another 14 percent — $496 billion — went to other safety-net programs like Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, school meals, low-income housing assistance, child care assistance and other social programs.

This means that 75 percent of the total United States budget goes to making war or paying people to do nothing. Of course, in theory, the Social Security Trust Fund is supposed to consist of money the government confiscated from workers and set aside on their behalf. But Congressional thieves long ago looted the fund, making it the Ponzi scheme that Governor Rick Perry was reviled for characterizing it as a few weeks ago.

As Perry learned, however, you’re not supposed to mention the obvious. The sacred principals of Ingsoc apply: newspeak, doublethink, the mutability of the past. War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, Social Security is flush with cash, we’re from the government and we’re here to help you, the not-war in Libya will be over in days not weeks, the Federal Reserve is not printing money.

In Washington, the word “cuts” also falls under the category doublespeak. Cuts are not cuts in the sense that regular people understand cuts. Cuts in Washington are actually no more than a reduction in growth. If something that would normally see an annual increase of — say — 10 percent gets reduced to an increase of 8 percent, the politicians cry gloom and doom at the prospect of a massive “cut” in spending.

But why would we expect the elites to cut off their largesse? After all, former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan so deftly affirmed a point I have made before: There is no chance of default when we can just print more money.

When George W. Bush entered the White House in January 2001, the Federal government had expenditures of $1.79 trillion and revenues of more than $2.03 trillion. Now, we are told that 2011 projected revenues of $2.28 trillion are not enough to fund a functioning government, even though that was more than enough 10 years ago.

The warfare/welfare state grows out of control. President Barack Obama plays the class warfare game to gin up support for stealing more from the middle class under the guise of “making the rich pay their fair share.” But no one in Washington and none of those trolling for your votes in the GOP beauty contest are proposing cutting anything from the bulk of the Federal spending (except, of course, Representative Ron Paul, whom the mainstream media and Republican Party apparatchik continue to label as a kook in an attempt to marginalize him and force him from the race).

The liberal website Alternet published an excellent exposé on why the elected elites oppose cuts in warfare spending. It demonstrates why they so fear Ron Paul.

If you are pinning your hopes on the Congressional “supercommittee” to cut the budget in any meaningful way, you are delusional at best. The entire supercomittee has been bought and paid for by the military-industrial complex. Committee member Senator Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) put any notion of military cuts to rest right out of the gate when, at a recent forum sponsored by conservative think tanks, he said, “When we had our first meeting the chairman asked, ‘Well what do we think about defense spending (cuts)?’ and I said, ‘I’m off the committee if we’re gonna talk about further defense spending.’” And Kyl gets less from the military-industrial complex than most others on the supercommittee.

Of course, any talk of cutting “entitlement” — welfare — spending is met with instant derision from all sides. Government has created a dependency class that keeps the elites in power. And its policies — combined with those of the Federal Reserve — have grown the class of those who now see no hope beyond becoming part of the dependency class.

We have a “lost generation,” according to a report by The Associated Press. Young adults entering the job market during this prolonged economic disaster are finding few job prospects but are saddled with enormous college loan debt and no way out. Their career choices are mostly limited to tending bar, waiting tables and finding odd jobs. If the slump ever ends — and it’s not likely as long as the government continues to make bad choices (see Japan) — they will be older but will have no experience in their chosen field and will be competing for jobs with new college graduates. It’s a bleak outlook for them.

Meanwhile, Helicopter Ben Bernanke continues to stoke the fires of hyperinflation with his ridiculous money-printing policies. Printing money steals the wealth of society’s producers to the benefit of the elites. It’s a hidden tax. It finds the cash you’ve stored under your mattress or in your savings account and plunders it. Few people understand this.

The elites and the MSM say QE2 and “twists” and stimulus and bailouts are the only way to end the economic disaster. Most of the mindless government-school non-educated zombies walking the streets today accept such drivel without question, bang, banging their heads against the wall in a never-ending quest for something different from what’s always been the same.

“American Idol” and “Dancing With The Stars” are what is important to them. Give them Monday Night Football and beer and chips. No more silly, boring talk of economics, the Federal Reserve, legislative bills.

Welcome to life in the warfare/welfare state. It cannot sustain itself forever. The collapse will be ugly, but it is inevitable.

    The retiree’s that are on social security have paid into this system
    their entire working life. The social security disability people are
    the one’s that have paid little or nothing into the system, and are
    bringing the system down. Social Security was never intended for people on disabilities, when it started. The other problem we are facing is
    that 47 out of 100 Americans pay no income tax, including large corporations.

      I beg to differ with you. Not all people drawing social security disability paid little or nothing in. I have worked for 43 years paying into social security since I was 14.Just because we are diabled now doesn’t mean we are dead beats believe me I paid my fair share both financially and physically.

        Some like you do – but most don’t. With the ability to draw “Crazy money” now, many start drawing it before the third grade. One of the real problems I have with the majority of disability money such as crazy money is that the person draws it and someone else ALSO draws it to “take care of them”. Retired people certainly don’t get to hit the money for double even if someone else does take care of them.

        Don’t forget that a “single” mom, if she can get on SS for any reason also draws it for ALL of her kids.

        As I understand it, ~SSS is not supported by Federal income tax but FICA which is federal/state tax of a much smaller percent. A .9 something %

        which vest the contributor to SSS and Unemployment Insurance in relation to how much they have paid into the system over a certain period of time.

        I know I’ve contributed in excess of 100,000 to this fund to date and at 63 I yet to file, not needing the money while I know others do.

        It’s a pay forward program, not perfect by a long shot but all and all, a very popular program that does work and address needs of society like no other.

        Some people want out of this program. Some people see this huge pile of loot and want to privatize it and make personal profits with it.

        I fear what would happen is just more personalized profits and public loses while peoples most basic needs will not be addressed, placing more burdens on family and church which maybe where they should be. But sadly, family and church already has their hands full.

        Already, the church fails in so many ways today some seem to think the Government should intervene in family and church matters.

        So adding more burden to the church and family is seen as some correction?

        Are 60 and 70 year old parents going to claim the responsibility for their children? Are 30 year old children to bear all the burden of their parents.

        In the last 10 days, my 84 year old Father has ran up hospital bill of $27,000.00 and it’s still growing. Should I bear this burden if nothing else was in place to do so?

        I admit, ~ spending 250,000 on anyone with one foot in the grave before they became ill doesn’t make a lot of sense, but what our options?

        We pay forward, ~ I might die and that $100,000 I’ve put in, I don’t draw a nickle of. That’s the way it works, maybe I paid for Dad. ~ Not to mention Dad paid into SSS for years as well.

        ~ This Medical Industry served demands, employs workers and they pay taxes as well. ~ They run on money! Lots of money. ~ Wealth in being moved about, giving everyone an opportunity a chance at standing in the food chain.

        Life is not a one way street unless of course you see yourself as being the center of the Universe. If you do, this “paying forward” will offend your senses.

        Your claim that “some do – but MOST don’t” is fictionalized to merely prove a bias. In all, SSD and/or SSI as a whole serve a major majority of deserving recipients. Unfortunately, the policies are guided by corrupt medical and psychological/psychiatric health engines and lobbyist efforts that cater to the mindset of expanding the belly of the system to providing for those who their private society profits from. Thus, if you are some fat broad with six kids by six different fathers, hopefully all of whom are in prison so you don’t have child support interfering, you can get a doctor(s) somewhere that can claim you suffer from such ailments as “anxiety attacks” and therefore can’t work, and thus applicable and acceptable for SSD or SSI. Until there are viable ways of finding, weeding out, and exempting abuse from these systems, those systems and our nation will suffer. Yet, your statement alluding to the point that MOST abuse the system isn’t true.

        I always believed that disablity pay was to come from Welfare. Then, if you had paid into SS, you would draw that instead when you actually retired at age 65 or so. But there was too much money piling up in SS waiting for the people to retire.

        I once computed that if you could invest what you paid into SS at 5% interest (the standard bank interest at the time) you would have well over $1 million in the account for you when you did retire after 40+ years. If ALL adults did that, just think of the amount in the SS fund at any one time! The politicians simply couldn’t stand to see all that money “going to waste” as they figure it since it wasn’t going to buy more votes.

        I worked everyday, every year of my life until suffering a disabling DVT, and subsequent finding of an enlarged heart in 1998. After a year of struggles, unemployment, losing all my savings and possessions, I resorted to living in meager Christian men’s shelters until Social Security Disability came through a year and a half after applying for it. To qualify, if I remember back that far correctly, I had to have a standard 20 quarters or credits to qualify for full disability, or SSD. I had been out of country for almost a year allowing me only 19 credits, and that one small unfortunate time period during my life disqualified me for full disability. I received SSI or supplemental social security, in that although I had paid in all my life, I had missed the one quarter or credit criteria and had to live off of a starting monthly income of $500 per month. SSI is designed to catch those who fall through the loopholes. So anyone that says I didn’t deserve that income, anyone that says I didn’t pay in just like the rest of us is simply simpleminded and of the same mindset your famous Republicans are. Forget that the money comes from the American people, disinformationalize the Americans we can get to blindly follow to repeat the same insanity in acting as if it will cure all, deny those you can and it will leave more for the rest and we can somehow fictionally claim a healthier nation while allowing those we actually serve, the rich and wealthy, to approve, and those willing to blindly follow (non-afflicted healthy and working class) to be appeased.

    Work to get paid sounds only fair… There are many things they can do, even if it’s things like that, they rest of us have to work most of the day to pay for all that so why not?

        You are correct. It wasn’t changed until quite some time after the Civil War. In fact, I want to say that was in the 1930s or so when it was changed. The idea was that if you didn’t have something to defend like property, you wouldn’t vote for what was best for the US.

        That’s ridiculous, Angel. There are an awful lot of educated (or even just plain intelligent) working people who don’t own property who would be left out in the cold. I’ve always felt that renting was better than buying because there are no worries about upkeep, etc.

        I think we are getting an excellent example from Congress as to why they wanted property owners to vote and not everyone. Too many people are voting based on who they think will provide them with more “free” stuff instead of what is best for the country.

      I’ve always kind of liked Heinlein’s idea of voting – no one can vote or run for public office UNLESS THEY HAVE SERVED IN THE MILITARY FIRST. The argument was that if you weren’t willing to prove that you were ready to put the country first, then you shouldn’t be representing our country.

    Since the federal government can’t seem to get that fence finished on our border, why don’t we have welfare recipients take 3 month shifts at working on the fence??? I suspect the welfare rolls would be drastically reduced once that policy is introduced! Problem solved.

      I have made the statement before that we could even put the ‘prisoners’ to work in building the double border fence and tall stations of brick or stone needed to stop or slow the flood of illegals from our south.

      It is work and after all, and whether Welfare or Prisoner, they are getting fed and their needs are getting met and then some… WORK FOR IT… like the tax payers are who pay those costs.

      Gov’t Paid More Than $600 Million in Benefits to Dead People.

      Checks keep going out even after the former employees pass away and the deaths are not reported, according to the report this week from the Office of Personnel Management’s inspector general, Patrick McFarland.

      In one case, the son of a beneficiary continued receiving payments for 37 years after his father’s death in 1971. The payments – totaling more than $515,000 – were only discovered when the son died in 2008.

      The government has been aware of the problem since a 2005 inspector general’s report revealed defects in the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund. Yet the improper payments have continued, despite more than a half dozen attempts to develop a system that can figure out which beneficiaries are still alive and which are dead, the report said.

      Last year, government investigators found out that more than 89,000 stimulus payments of $250 each from the massive economic recovery package went to people who were either dead or in prison.

    Hmm? “elected elites” well that narrows it down some.

    Someday I’m going to figure out who you are talking about when this term “elites’ is used.

    I think we’ve always had “elites” in both government and society such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Quincy Adams, Thomas Payne, men that stood head and shoulders above the rest. But only in recent months has the term has been applied in such a derogatory matter.

    I perceive it as just another attempt to cloud reality by adulterating the written English word with jargon and slur for some purpose with clouded intent.

    It seems that we are attempting to talk about something without actually talking about it. Just more cloaked Tea Party keys words and catch phrases? There is just so much you can’t openly discuss without exposing your true position and feeling. Heaven forbid, anyone find that out! I know that it must be difficult!

    Do you have you own hand shake too? You know, like one of those urban negro hand shakes? Something that identifies you as being separate and different from other people?

    sorry out too all lajit social security recips. you are not the only people receiving soc sec,many who can work and are as young as early 20s are retired retired also, (tired) (key word) they suck the teet of the system. they work the sys. better than a lawyer, they need to put forth that effert to finding a job. and welfare has many more. I have tennants that I have asked why don’t you or your husband or boyfriend get a job, response is it will cut my check amount down. the government knows this is going on but they are afraid for political reasons and riots, so suck it up you OLD PEOPLE they will make cuts to your programs.

    Congrats to FL. I would like to see all the states do this and add an addendum birth control.You have families out there that are collecting welfare for their kids,their kids living at home collecting welfare for their kids and so on and so on.They should stop illegals from getting any assistance. When my grandfather wanted to become a citizen he had to prove he could speak english,knew the montary system and PROVE he could support his family.Why can illegals come in collect SS having never worked here while the people who have worked all their lives have to fight to get it? The one problem I see with FL law is they have to be clean for a year or attend rehab,who’s going to pay for their rehab? Are they only being tested to get welfare or do they have to be tested every month and are they required to take random tests?

      Once again we find ourselves drowning in a pool of protests with little to no actual worthy promotion of feasible and viable solutions on the matter. Some have very valid points to offer such as drug testing to be accepted on welfare entitlement programs. Others quickly rebuke such claims as unconstitutional, yet with a blind viewpoint as to the worthiness of such claims in that without regulation, welfare became the parasitical program we now face.

      Any nation that does not have a successful welfare program in use in past history and through a governmental use of wisdom, never reaches or attains a level of civilization and success desired for prolonging the healthy existence of that government and nation. That’s a fact and no one’s personal viewpoints or begrudgingly voiced complaints can dispute that as a fact of archived history. By not using that wisdom, a nation will face a timeline of economic rises and falls, pertinent to its level of public assistance for the increasing and decreasing number of impoverished families.

      Yet a successful means and a constant protocol of regulatory control prohibiting abuse of those welfare systems must be in action, or the whole cycle and circle rises and falls, succeeds and fails, repeating itself to the whims of financial calendars.

      Only a fool would suggest cutting the budget to welfare. Cutting the budget without stemming welfare abuse merely monstrously infects the system where those who truly need the help to rise up above problems keeping them in poverty levels are unjustly afflicted. How can someone propose to cut a budget, continuing to allow the billions that ARE spent to go to those who leech and parasitically abuse the system, wasting that money intended for the truly needy? Ignoring the abuse in welfare, Medicare or Medicaid is merely enslaving ourselves to those who like to paint the picture of the current administration as failing to do their job, while ignoring the fact that Republicans have wanted to cut Social programs all along as long as the richer populace has no tax increase and the wealthiest, elitist and most powerful keep their money.

      The same goes for Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security (disability). Cutting the budget for those programs without cutting off the abusers is a feeble and foolish attempt, not curing the problem nor even treating it, but merely making the paperwork look better for voters and withdrawing the public opinion from pursuing equal and fair taxation for one and all, insisting that the well to do and better off all the way to the filthy rich pay a fair share form their own pockets to attempt at reconciling the country’s burden.

      With that in play, we need a legislative branch that is prohibited from placing strangleholds on our government. If a bill cannot pass and is used to stall the legislative process by implementing impassable parts to that bill, then that bill must be taken apart piece by piece, those issues voted on separately, the ignorant parts from the worthy parts. At least the bills would be passed or failed, but we would have our legislative process back.

      We hear so many supporters complaining of bills that are given to the Senate to be merely shelved without bringing them to vote. What such opinions fail to say is that many of those bills have ludicrous exceptions, provisions that are implemented for the purpose of making our legislative process impudent, unless their greedy tit-for-tat provisions are allowed. It’s the same stalwart stubbornly selfish tactics that were used by Republicans on the debt committee to gridlock and delay any resolve to the debt increase, which was the major reason S&P gave for the lowering of our nation’s tax rating, our government’s inability to resolve its issues in a timely and successful manner. In the long run, the republican side got an even worse bargain than was originally offered $ 4 trillion in savings and reductions.

      In all:

      Offered a Grand Bargain, with more than $4 trillion in savings. Republicans said, “No.”

      Offered Republicans to pass a clean bill, just as GOP leaders had supported many times in the past. Republicans said, “No.”

      Offered Republicans to Biden-led bipartisan talks. Republicans quit.

      Offered a $2.4 trillion debt-reduction package, 83% of which would come from spending cuts. Republicans said, “No.”

      Offered support for the McConnell/Reid “Plan B.” Republicans said, “No.”

      As is evident, the American people have become fast annoyed with the Republican engine of “just say no” or “do nothing” politics.

    why does the government count what is paid out in social security? it was supposed to be supported by workers money paid out in a tax. the thieves in congress stole what they called the social security surplus. i’m sure if it would have been left alone there would have been plenty with the baby boomer parents and the baby boomers paying into it. now with no funds it will surely fail. why was’nt a fund set up in the past to return the money. the thieve had no intention of paying it back just as in the national debt. our congress cant do without. big business who pay them off will get everything. take them out of the budget and there might not be a deficit. when the big boys make you part of the elite club why not take the payment andgive them everything. i wonder how things will go for them if this country goes belly up. the will be forgotten. the vote can beat the dollar. get out every one and vote america. we need to get the elite chosen presidental and congressional candidates like romney and perry. lets get ron paul in. maybe there would be a few congressional ones who would follow. end this crap of of losing righs and voting in reps who become your ruling class.

    Has anyone on this board ever met people who come here from Haiti, Jamaica (mon), Cameroon, Nigeria, etc.? These people come here from impoverished countries and find work. They are amazed at the welfare system in this nation. Many of them start out in jobs like care givers to the elderly and/or terminally ill, but many are studying to get better jobs.

    The worst thing that ever happened in America was when the government took over welfare. The churches handled it before that and naturally did a much better job.

      Angel Wannabe, the feds didn’t loot the Trust Fund, there never was such a fund, see my above Social Security comment. If the S.S. Act taxes had been set aside for old-age benefits it would have been held unconstitutional. Now, the so-called ‘Trust Fund’ consists of Treasury Bonds, which the feds are legally obligated to pay interest on. I see this as a sort of slight-of-hand, to dissuade bond holders from cashing them in, which would bankrupt the nation.

        This is a very old idea. They are called literacy tests. They were used in the South for nearly a hundred years to keep blacks and the poor from voting. This has now returned as a foundational principle of the Tea Party. Blacks and the poor should not be allowed to vote. They can serve in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan where they make up a disproportionate number of the men and women in the ranks. But they should not be allowed to vote.     Amazing, how mother nature is so active in our lives, yet we overlook what is happening or has happened. When you put a pack of rats in a box with a big piece of cheese, they scurry to the cheese and have a banquet. When the cheese is gone, they chew on each other. (sue)

    Well, when the Feds gave our money to AIG to provide the cash to the investors that held non-performing loans, we (the public) never saw ANY benefits. NOT even the distressed consumer. Yet, we paid to keep the investors quiet so they wouldn’t sue AIG or any others for fraud. The investors WERE defrauded to invest into these toxic loans. So, by giving them the cheese, they eliminated that portion of the big bite (court action)

    Now that the internet has made known what the media (social ants) will not let us know about, we find out that everyone (all of the rats) are suing each other. Great to see. Just hope someone in Washington, besides the stalwart NY AG steps up to the plate and criminal actions start.

    The only way out of this mess is to reset the values of money held in banks and paper to todays real value.

Every school has been dumbed down to accomodate the lowest performing kids. Drug testing is an excellent idea and will force welfare recipients to get off drugs, which is obviously in their best interest. How could anyone complain about that?

You say put them to work doing ditchdigger jobs, but honestly, how many of YOU, let alone the people you are hating on so hard, can do that kind of work? The drug testing idea is fine, but how about FORCING all lawmakers to take the same tests, and to live on the same retirement system, as those of us who weren’t so lucky as to have a few extra million laying around hidden in various “retirement” accounts. If it is good enough for the men, and women, who serve so you can talk this talk, it for sure should be good enough for you and the people who write all these laws.

Now everyone acts like the 70 year old is just sitting on their a$$ getting rich off social security. Sorry, I am old, beat up, used and tired; and quite frankly deserve to sit on my a$$. I worked hard for 49 years, never collected a days worth of unemployment and now I am somehow a leech for collecting social security. Dam, that makes me mad, and it’s not like you can live rich on social security. If I had not saved along the way I couldn’t live on it at all.

        We need to check the records back 50 years and find out what politicians voted for any budgets that spent OUR Social Secrrity money on anything other than SS Benefits for those who paid into it.

        Once we have the names we arrest those still above ground, try them for mass theft / fraud / larceny and anything else we can think of. We convict them and publically hang them. (In front of the Capital would be great) We then confiscate EVERYTHYING they own and liquidate it. The proceeds then go into OUR SS Fund.

        Those that are dead will have assets they left behind confiscated / liquidated and put into OUR SS Fund. Digging them up and publically hanging them would be optional.

        This applies to anyone who is / has been in Congress and all presidents from LBJ forward.

        Just the Kennedy and Bush fortunes would go a long way to filling the gap.

        Same here! It REALLY pisses me off to see the deserving and the undeserving lumped together in one pot.

        For instance, my sister worked for YEARS in the post office. The result? One hip replacement and the other hip needs replaced. Constant freaking pain as the bones in the other hip grind together. Yes, she now gets SS and she freaking DESERVES IT!!! She paid into that fund for years and years and years.

        The work she did in the post office office absolutely wrecked her body and she is paying dearly for it. Don’t anybody DARE to lump her in with her hubby’s brother, here from Jamaica getting SSI for a “bad back” while he sells drugs on the side.

        He’s not even a citizen of the US, yet he is raking in the dough hand over fist. He shouldn’t be getting a dime in US money, and in fact, should be sent back to Jamaica in a tin tub. Let Jamaica take care of his ass. He has been paid a lot more SS money than he has put in for the small amount of time he actually worked. Yeah, “hurt his back on the job” my ass.

        I feel the same way!! My husband and I were disabled from injuries from a car accident (not our fault) and our world came to a screaming halt. After 10 years, we still have immense medical and drug bills. The day of the accident our income stopped. We used all of our “nest egg” that we both had been working for, savings, and sold everything we could sell just to survive. It took 2 1/2 years for the government to approve us for Medicare Disability, and then another 2 years to wait before we cold use the Medicare insurance. When all of our assets were gone we had to resort to credit cards…and from there it continues to go.We are both on oxygen, can’t hardly move from the pain that racks our bodies, and even leaving the house is a major operation. We’re grateful for what we get from the government but it is miniscule compared to what we were earning. Would I like to return to work? You bet I would, and so would my husband, but all we see in site at the moment is eventually having to go bankrupt, give up our home of 30 years that we love, and go live under a bridge somewhere. Does the government care? No. We cannot even get help for food. Needless to say, we eat alot of rice and oatmeal The only help we get is from Social Security Disability. So please don’t classify us, either, as some sort of deadbeats. In our wildest dreams we never thought that we would live (try) out our days like this., I, myself, amd praying for Rapture.       Where did the “hate” talk come from, CP? I saw nobody dissing Social Security recipients.
      As far as ditch-digging jobs, I’m 61 and I could do it easily. So I would imagine that most younger people could also. But there is a problem, and that’s that most make-work is of little use to the economy. Only Free Markets can address efficiently the needs and desires of the consumers. Also, the make work projects require expensive supervisors, and it is difficult to make people work when they don’t want to work, short of whipping them, which of course wouldn’t be allowed.
      And “the men, and women, who serve so you can talk this talk” aren’t protecting us. They’re protecting the Crony Capitalists and others who benefit from the Empire Building that is done in our names. They’re also making more enemies for us, who someday will bring the fight to our own country so that we pay for the follies of our Leaders.

        Unlike some of you….I get that part.
        But make no mistake,those who have not aligned themselves with us in these conditions to practice in the field are making a grievous error.
        Militarily it is the same as playing poker with no poker face.
        Many here fear the inevitable doom and gloom of a world war 3 situation.Truth be told it is fast arriving and lacking practice of fighting in the styles we see extant,is stupidity.
        Door to door could possibly become a reality here.
        I dont know about you,but I think that having folks with experience doing that…both young and old,is a good thing.

        Angel – It’s really not as easy as it was in the “old days.” I could always come up with ways to make cash. Nowadays there are too many people going after the same slice of pie, and when you live in a state like SC that’s so far behind, there just is no opportunity. I just heard of a 35 year old woman who lost her job some time ago and receives Food Stamps but can get no other help and is just waiting for her elec. to get turned off. There are many more like her, and she was laid off from a really good job. There is NOTHING going on here where I live. Even the flea markets are suffering. I was almost there a couple of years ago; however, I am resourceful and did find ways to just make it, only having to live through having no gas to cook with for 4 months. Unfortunately, not everyone is made of the same cloth.

      CP has used a bait an switch. The post was about WELFARE recipients. Social Security is a different animal (although politicians have used the money from those people who did work and pay into the systems for welfare and all kinds of other vote buying schemes). Social Security is unconstitutional but there will be no way to make it go away. This tells us that Congress & the President needs to stop instituting more unconstitutional laws that are merely buying votes.

      Please read the Constitution before you make these sort of pronouncements. This is one of the reasons that the country is in such sad shape. If the Constitution doesn’t explicitly allow the FEDERAL government to do something it is reserved for the states or the people. The Federal government is working to become totally dictatorial with 535 (Congress) + 1 (President) + 9 (Supreme Court) to become a dictator by committee.

    I like Angel’s idea of having prisoner’s and welfare recipients rebuild our infrastructure. My only caveat is that in order is that we should require payment of the going rate or a living wage whichever is greater. With prisoners, we will dole out the money on a monthly basis AFTER they are released.

        I was just talking to an employee at DSS here, and she said that any women who receive welfare have to be involved in some type of program. I also know that there is a limit to the amount of time they can collect; and they do not receive more money for a new child beyond a certain number. It is not quite as bad as it used to be. There are big reforms coming here to SC, where the Gov. has brought in someone from, I believe, Hawaii to revamp the whole system.

        I have always felt that the prison system should be a self sufficiant institution. I think they should be raising their own food, gardens,cows,chickens,pigs etc; as well as growing cotton and other products (in a large enough capacity) that it can be sold to the open market to help support the prisons themselves. Other than the purchace of the property, building the prison and basic start up costs, not one dime of taxpaer money should be spent on the prison system.
        Prison is supposed to remove the “bad guys” from society and rehabilitate them to be returned to society in the majority of cases.
        What better way to rehabilitate them than to make them continue to live in a completely self sufficient system while incarcerated? They don’t work…they don’t eat…cruel?…nope…we don’t even have to enforce it…the other inmates will enforce it themselves(trust me on this). It would be akin to you comming over and eating from my garden, at the very least, you’re going home with a load of rocksalt in your keester.
        All we would need is the guards to keep them in and they can also be paid from the procceeds or sale of prison products. This can also bring back manufacturing to the US of A in a major way…since there seem to be an awful lot of prisons in this country….

        As for welfare….get them off of their lazy arses and put them to work picking up trash,mowing right of ways’ etc….someone above said Utah tried… and it was found to be UnConstitutioal….As far as I can tell…it is a contract…you want the money?…sign the contract and do the job….don’t want to sign and do the work…go away…it’s your choice………

        We have a prison farm like the one you are talking about outside Lake Jackson, Tx. where I live. It is very self-sufficient by farming year-round (except for the 2 months here where the temp actually gets in the 30s) and their cows raised there, This year was a bad year for crops due to the lack of rain here. It requires very little tax dollars to keep it up in running and I’ve never felt like my safety was threatened by prisoner escape (most are small time thieves or wife beaters, we did have one excape during hurricane Rita in 2005 when everyone evacuated, he got to live like a king for 2 weeks until he was caught living within 20 miles of the prison.) The only inmates allowed to work outside are smaller sentence criminals or ones who have shown that they can behave (The only other ways to get free time outside the usually 30-1 hour a day is to go to the Church on the prison grounds that the local area churches send pastors or congregation members to minister at or attend classes to get their GEDs or college credits). I don’t have exact numbers on the cost of operations for the prison but I imagine they are significantly less than others in our area who don’t have a farming program.

        p.s. some of the prisoners who leave actually go on to farming outside the prison since there are plenty of those jobs in our area.

        Texas – Sounds like the prisons in Norway. I heard an interview last week abuot them. They even allow the prisoners sharp tools to do their work with, like axes and chainsaws. The prisoners take pride in their work and have a better chance of being rehabilitated. In the long run, it is much cheaper to have this type of prison system. In this country the majority of prisons only serve to make the criminals worse!

        I had almost forgotten, but back in 1981, at a low point, I collected welfare for, I believe, a month. It was a township welfare, and I had to work one day a week in the office to pay back. Doesn’t anybody do that anymore?

        Rehabilitation does work and is less expensive than strict confinement. The big problem is some states force them to keep their felony status throughout their life after finishing their sentences. That is a disaster for trying to reemploy.

      This is a great idea to receive welfare. Also, in my opinion, before you receive welfare for the week or every other week (not sure how often welfare payments are provided), you should have to provide something that proves you were trying to find employment. Like, at least a document of who you called looking for work, etc. I am all for helping the desperate who would sell their left arm to find a job, but not for helping the deadbeats clearly taking advantage of the system.

        You love to tout the change from the bottom, but the fact is that it bottomed after Obama was elected, most likely from the panic of investors who were wise enough to know what we were in for. And when it rose back to 11000 or so it was largely a result of the much weaker dollar, which had dropped about 1/3 in value against other currencies.

        Then in January 2009 it had gone back up to 9,034.
        But by March of 2009 it was back down to 6,547 (below the 2008 low). Note that was after Obama had been doing his thing for over a month.
        By December of 2009 it had seemingly “recovered” to 10,420. But there was a catch. The dollar was now worth much less than 9 months earlier.
        In fact, the dollar had gone from being worth $1.58 Australian dollars in March of 2009 to only being worth $1.12 Australian dollars in December of 2009. In other words, almost the entire Down gain in those 9 months was due to a big decrease in the purchasing power of the dollar.
        Now, almost two years later, and after a 10% further decrease in the value of the dollar, the Dow is only 600 points higher (about a 6% gain), less than the decrease in the purchasing power of the dollar.
        You have to love those Liberals — NOT.

        Funny how making people do crappy jobs for their welfare check is considered slavery while the rest of us that work hard for a living is not. What about those college students forced to work in fast food? I say if you are on welfare and are capable of work then you are considered an employee of the state and therefore must put in working hours. I don’t know the current state of affairs for the programs here, but I know a number of years ago the rules here were if you were receiving state aide as a single mother that you either had to work or your work was to watch the other single mother’s kids so they could work without paying ridiculously high child care.

        And I totally agree with Florida, I hope all the states institute this. Why should we be paying them to continue to do something illegal? I also think that if you have committed a serious crime you should also be ineligible for a number of years as you owe a debt to society and it must be paid in full.

        Gov. Huckabee said on his show Saturday night… that Welfare recipients should have to work on studies to improve themselves and their skills to better equip themselves for a JOB to get their Gov welfare check, not pay them to do NOTHING.

        I’m trying to figure out how your suggestion would work. I can just see getting a call from the HR department of a large company calling to schedule an interview – “I’m sorry, but I’ll have to call you back to schedule that interview; I’m on the side of the road picking up trash right now.” Many of us who have been unemployed long-term already spend 50+ hours a week looking for work, filling out applications, traveling to job interviews out of town (at our own expense), networking in our fields, volunteering for a company in hopes of being hired when a position opens up, etc. And then there is the “normal” tasks of life, such as taking care of parenting duties, cleaning house, paying bills (or calling to beg the utility company to give you another week extension to pay the bill). Oh yeah, and collecting recylables and cashing them in so you can have the money to buy toilet paper. And spending three hours at the social services office to turn in a couple papers that you already gave them copies of last month. And trying to weed out your possessions because you know that in a couple months your house will be sold at auction, and you have no idea where you are going to live because you have no money for first months rent or deposit, and what will happen to your pets when you are forced into a trailer or motel, and how will your 6 year old handle losing all of her pets AND the only house she’s ever known at one blow? I don’t know why people think that being unemployed means that you are sitting at home doing nothing all day. I’m sure that there are some people who do that, but the majority of the people I know who are unemployed are NOT in that category. We are the former middle-class, the people who have been shouldering most of the tax burden for the past 15 – 20 years. We do not want to be a burden to our fellow citizens, most of us are ashamed to be accepting public assistance, and yet we are left with no other choices. When Corporate America decided to slash jobs so that executives could have higher bonuses or give investors larger dividends or to cut costs, they sold our society down the river. Without a strong middle-class, a modern society cannot survive.

        The solution is relatively simple – businesses need to create (or re-instate) decent paying jobs. I spent 7 years in college, have a master’s degree and 14 years experience in my profession; why should all that be thrown away so I can work for minimum wage in a job that has no future? I am willing to start at the bottom in a company and work my way back up, but very few companies want to hire a 45 year old (who has more experience than most of the management team) into an entry-level position. Competition for the few existing jobs is so stiff, that if you have been unemployed for any length of time, are over 40 (or have too many years experience), or don’t currently live in that city, most hiring managers / HR departments will kick you out of the applicant pool automatically. I recently interviewed for a job in a small rural county in Northern California, which pays about $2000 a month (the average 2 bedroom apartment in this area is about $1000/mo, so the salary wouldn’t even support a small family). Three years ago, when a similar position was open, they had 20 applicants; this year, they had over 1000. I worked for that department for four years, at a higher level position, and yet I barely made the cuts to the second interview because there are so many qualified professionals in my field who are out of work. Putting educated, experienced people to work at menial jobs is not going to save our economy. It will only lengthen the amount of time it takes for someone to find decent employment and get themselves back on their feet.

        If you were to see me on the street, you’d think “typical stay-at-home, middle-class mom”, because I try my hardest to keep things fairly normal for my daughter’s sake. However, the frustration and pain is always there under the surface, and it has to come out sometimes. Usually that happens when I hear people talking about me and my family like we are trash. I think people need to hear personal stories to realize that all this talk is not about somebody on the wrong side of town or who has made bad choices in their lives. We are the neighbors who live down the street in that beautiful house you’ve always liked, the parents of your kid’s favorite team-mate from Little League, the people who have worked hard to reach the American Dream, only to have it shatter into a thousand pieces. It took a long time for me to come to grips with the fact that this situation is not a reflection of who I am. Fortunately, I have an extremely supportive husband and a great group of friends and family who keep reminding me of the wonderful things I do have in my life.

What most of the rightwing thinks is that anyone w/o a job or unable to work and who needs help for either a short time or for life, is worthless and not worthy of our aid. They are so lacking in compassion and caring that it amazes me when they deride fellow humans who are struggling, whie they call themselves ‘Christians’. What a joke! Huckabee is supposed to be a Christian minister…how would his role model Jesus view his appraoch to the homeless,jobless and generally lees forrtunate?

        I also believe that those that are healthy enough to work should be working for the city, picking up roadside trash, trimming shrubs at the court house, cleaning graffiti and so on. Do that three days a week and look for a real job two days a week. That’ll probably get quite a few of the abusers off of welfare when they realize they going to work just as hard for a state check as they will for a real job.

        We need to bring back an updated version of the 1930′s Works Progress Administratioon (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). These projects put millions of unemployed to work during the Great Depression and-in the case of the WPA-gave us engineering marvels like the George Washington Bridge. Also, don’t buy into this hype about the Federal Deficit. Yes, we must cut it in the longer term but at present we need to stimulate the economy WITHOUT printing any more money and unleashing even more inflation. Right now foreigners are flocking to buy more U.S. Treasury Bonds in a global flight to safety. They don’t seem worried about our ability to pay our debts!

        Rob, sorry to say but if you studied economics then you would understand the damage done by FDR’s policies. Yes they did put people to work temporarily. It took a war to get us out of the depression. If normal economic policies had been followed then the depression would have lasted a few months instead of years. During FDR’s terms the Fed grew at the greatest percentage in history along with its power. Remember as a mere farmer you could not produce more milk than allowed, or wheat, or corn, or as a tailor you had to charge an approved price. Now, all of the above made it to the Supreme Court under FDR by rules made by that administration. All were brought against small businessmen and farmers and if left alone would have resulted in lower consumer prices according to normal business practices.
        Furthermore, a suit was brought to the Supreme Court under FDR in which the party wanted to ensure Social Security would be treated as a trust and not touched by the government. The Court sided with the government leaving it open to be used as a slush fund then and LBJ just made it easier. Think about it. The age of retirement for Social Security was set at the average age of death for the average American. Who in their right mind would set retirement age at the same time of their death?

        Yes, it’s better to make people do something for their money, but it would be even better to get Government out of it, so the work they do is productive work. With the WPA and the CCC, people felt as though they were doing productive work, so they didn’t bother to get real jobs in the private sector. But just making a person sweat doesn’t constitute a productive job. Cataloging the rocks in the desert, for instance, would make a person sweat, but who needs the output of that work? Only the Free Market can determine when a product or service is desirable by the consumers. Anything else results in misallocation of capital. When capital is taken from a productive group and given to a non-productive group, the net result is a loss to the economy.

        When I was born in 1975 I had a cleft lip and palate. I had my first surgery at 2 weeks then four more by age 16. At the age of 28 I was diagnosed with mitrovalve prolaspe and had to go on disability. Then at 31 I was diagnosed with a pituatary tumor in the brain and within 10 months I weighed 68 pounds. In 2003 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Hormone Resistance Syndrome which had apparently caused my brain tumor.I thank God that I am still alive today. Now at age 36 I have degenerative discs disease in my back that causes severe pain 24 hours a day. If I could work I would so please do not be uncompassionate on people who have to go on disability. I am in college part time online to earn my bachelors degree in Social Work so that I may hopefully be able to work this profession with my health so that I may help others. I make $674.00 per month and am barely making ends meet. I just fiqured my monthly bills for October and I will only have $100.00 left over for the rest of the month not including my prescription copays and some of my medicines that are not covered by medicaid.         n obody inforces the welfare requrerments there are so many recieving unwarranted funds all you have to do is watch the supermarkets and watch those who pay with food stamps what they wear what they drive up in .They buy in other names some work in other names and collect they are never found yet some who need it don’t get it and if you check you would find out how unfare it is .

      I personally met a woman in Ohio who received $1000 a month in SSDI because she was a crack head. She had ten kids, from ten different men, and they were all crack heads as well, and each one received $800 a month from SSDI. They all lived in HUD houses, received food stamps and medicaid. You see, the government looks at drug addition as a disability! So, if they fail the drug test for welfare, they will just put them on Social Security Disability Insurance, and you and I still wind up paying for them!

        That’s not a disability that’s a treatable addiction. I think they should be given a choice, you want aid, you can have it, in rehab. You’ll have food, a place to live and when you are done help to find a job and routine follow up testing. If you relapse off the program you go. A disability is something you can’t help, like being medically restricted by your doctor, or a mental disorder that makes it hard if not impossible to deal with and work with people. A drug addiction may make the person seem disabled, but they need treatment, and either they can accept it and get help or they can flounder along in their denial. If we are trying to fight drugs then we should not be enabling them to support the illegal trade.

      Wouldn’t it be better if we just eliminated the disease rather than treating the symptoms? Get Government out of the welfare (ie, vote buying) business. Leave that to private charities where the locals really know who deserves it and who doesn’t. That would end many of the controversies (drug use, system abuse by illegals, the ‘leaky bucket’, etc.) as well as saving the taxpayers tons of money, and putting welfare recipients (those who can) back to work where they would have a much higher self-image. The resulting prosperity would give work to anybody who really wants to work.
      There is a downside. The Government administrators of the Welfare System would have to get real jobs in the private sector and become productive again, and the Politicians would have to find a new way to buy votes. Boo Hoo.

Since I was 16, I’ve worked for 25 out of the 27 years, have paid my taxes, voted in every election, served jury duty, and been a good upstanding citizen. So because I was laid off 2 years ago, through no fault of my own, you think I should be stripped of my right to VOTE?!!?!?!!? That is possibly the most asinine thing I have ever heard. If I am a citizen over the age of 18, I have a right to vote, and you better be damn sure that I won’t lay down and let ANYONE threaten to take away my most precious right as a US citizen !!!!

        Read the Declaration of Independence, Wilbur! In part, the preamble reads … “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — …. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes” So would you like to throw away just the 24th Amendment of our Constitution, or would you like to scrap the 14th, 15th, 19th and 26th Amendments as well, and go back to the good ole days where the only people who could vote were wealthy white men? Such major changes to our government are not to be taken lightly. In case you weren’t aware, our Constitution specifically states that the right to vote cannot be denied “By reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax” – (24th Amendment, 1964). In Harper vs Virginia Board of Elections, the Supreme Court stated that “a state violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution whenever it makes the affluence of the voter or payment of any fee an electoral standard. Voter qualifications have no relation to wealth.”

        I do understand your frustration that so much money is being spent on public assistance programs. It’s the same frustration I feel when I read that another major corporation is laying off thousands of middle-class workers for no other reason than to line the pockets of upper management, or that most CEOs of Fortune 100 companies make over $1 million per month, or that we are spending billions on wars, “security” and foreign aid, Personally, I’d rather see the money go to help people in our country first, and then help other countries. But, part of being a citizen of a large, complex nation is recognizing that not everyone is like you. You are not the dictator, nor am I. If you want to protest how your tax money is being spent, then take that up with your elected officials.

        It is NOT okay to take your anger out on your fellow citizens, many of whom are suffering more than you could possibly imagine. Just remember, there is NO job security for anyone these days. Your company could lose their big contract and go belly-up tomorrow, you could develop a health condition that makes it impossible for you to continue working, your boss could decide that your salary is cutting into the department budget too much and start “creating” evidence of your “incompetence” so they can fire you. In short, you or someone you love could end up in this hell-storm in a blink of an eye. What would YOU do? Turn down the unemployment insurance you are eligible to receive (which you’ve been paying into for decades) so you can be homeless, or live in your home without utilities? Turn down Medi-care when you haven’t been able to afford your diabetic medications for a year, or when your child needs to have her appendix removed (sorry honey, you’re just going to have to lie there and scream in pain – I don’t want to accept any public assistance money) ? If you are already retired, do you collect Social Security and Medi-care? If not, what are you going to do with those checks when they start coming – send them back? We all have times that we pay into our system, and we all have times that we collect from our system. The situation that I’m in is NOT my choice, and I spend 7 days a week looking for jobs, filling out applications, keeping up with developments in my field so I will be more employable; I even volunteer for an agency to keep my skills sharp, and so I will be top of the list when a paid position opens up. I am not lazy, I am not inferior. I’m a skilled professional with a wealth of experience to offer to our society, I’m intelligent, I’m a survivor, and I am not going to slink away like a dog just because mean-spirited people like you want to kick me when I’m already at the lowest point of my life.

      It would be a good thing to get the northern states to follow on adapting the Drug testing law but the crime bosses are tied to politicians and will fight the law that would take down their drug profits. The law should be a federal law because the bulk of welfare money is federal money. That would save taxpayers money but as we know politicians are blind when it comes to saving money unless its their own.

      Jersey already has more drug addicts then all of Florida, but Christie is in the process of sending them to Governor Cuomo.

      I think it would be a great idea to send all of America’s liberal drug addicts to N.Y. and California, along with all welfare recipients.
      Take America’s entire, useful idiot liberal population, and contain them to an east and west coast communist state.
      Both states waste hundreds of billions on welfare already and if we can contain all of our worthless freaks to two communist states, America will once again become the great land we grew up in!
