Weather Good For Insects This Year In Florida

TITUSVILLE, Fla., Sept. 23 (UPI) — An unusually warm wet summer has led to an abundance of cockroaches, palmetto bugs, ants and other insects on Florida’s Space Coast, experts say.
Other factors may be contributing to the bug explosion in Brevard County, Florida Today reported Thursday. Those include a rise in insects resistant to the pesticides now in use, the large number of foreclosed homes where lawns and gardens are growing unchecked and the growth in recycling with large bins where items once quickly dumped as trash remain around longer.
“The roaches are extremely happy,” said Gene Bogen, one of the owners of Call Bogen & Sons. “That means they’re happy to come to your house too.”
Bogen said he has also been getting a lot of calls about spiders, suggesting that means animals that eat bugs are doing well too.
County officials had already said 2011 has been one of the worst years for mosquitoes in Brevard in quite a while. Dragonflies eat mosquitoes, and their population has exploded as well.
