U.S. Retail Sales Slide Week-To-Week

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) — U.S. retail receipts dropped in the week ending Saturday, a national trade group said Tuesday.
The International Council of Shipping Centers said sales dropped 1.2 percent from the previous week but rose 3.4 percent from the same week of 2010.
“The retail landscape turned more volatile over the past four weeks,” the report said.
In the latest week, “traffic softened considerably” at discount stores, while department stores saw business improve.
Weather is a major part of the retail situation, keeping consumers from stores or provoking a flurry of seasonal purchases. In the latest week, national temperatures were 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the same week a year ago and 1 degree cooler than the long-term average for the week.
The U.S. Energy Information Agency said gas prices dropped by 6 cents in the week to a national average price of $3.601 per gallon in the week ending Monday.
