Cause Not Determined In Wisconsin E. Coli Case

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 15 (UPI) — Wisconsin health officials said Thursday they still don’t know the cause of an E. coli outbreak that has killed one person and sickened eight others.
People in Green County with symptoms of an E. coli infection are being encouraged to contact their doctor, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Officials say symptoms of E. coli O157:H7, the strain affecting Green County, can include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.
“We haven’t been able to identify a pattern with sickened individuals,” Stephanie Smiley, director of communications for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, said. “Because we haven’t identified a source, we can’t say people couldn’t still become infected.”
Two of the eight infected people have been diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially fatal form of kidney failure.
