Retail Sales Rise In Week

September 13, 2011 by

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) — Retail sales receipts rose 1.3 percent in the week ended last Sunday, a U.S. trade group said Tuesday.

The International Council of Shopping Centers said sales were on a rebound after dropping 0.7 percent in the previous week due to Hurricane Irene, which interrupted shopping on the East Coast.

ICSC said “as more normal weather conditions returned to the East, in particular, so did the consumers’ spending appetite.

Compared to the same week a year earlier, sales rose 3.3 percent, ICSC said.

For the week, Weather Trends International said temperatures across the country were slightly higher than the same week of 2010, but close to the week’s long-term average.

Prices at the gas pump for the week averaged $3.661 per gallon, down slightly more than 1 cent from the previous week, the group said.
