Sweden May Ban Breast Injections

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 8 (UPI) — Swedish authorities say they’re considering banning injections to enhance women’s breasts over worries the substance used makes it harder to detect cancer.
Injectable implants can “hamper and sometimes make it impossible to interpret mammogram images,” the Swedish Medical Products Agency said.
The agency has received calls from a number of mammography centers saying the implant injections are causing difficulties in breast cancer screening, Swedish news agency TT reported Thursday.
The injections, using hyaluronic acid, are said to increase the size of a woman’s breasts on a semi-permanent basis without surgery.
The agency said it would consult experts from companies as well as medical professionals and officials from the National Board of Health and Welfare, and would rule as quickly as possible about whether the injections should be banned in Sweden.
