Stop Butchering Our National Anthem!

September 2, 2011 by

Stop Butchering Our National Anthem!

I had a great experience in Chicago last week. In fact, I had several, including my first-ever visit to Wrigley Field.

Somehow, this avid baseball fan had never made it to the historic ballpark. When a very dear friend found out that seeing a game at Wrigley was one of the top goals on my bucket list, she got me tickets to two games between the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs as a birthday present.

What incredible seats they were! On Wednesday night, we were in the second row behind the Braves dugout; and for Thursday afternoon’s game, we were even closer. The game takes on a whole new dimension when you’re close enough to the players to see sweat pouring and hear banter as they take to the field.

The entire experience was absolutely delightful… except for one minor blemish. At the opening of Wednesday night’s game, the young lady who was chosen to sing our national anthem turned what should have been a joyful occasion into a travesty.

First, she got the words wrong. If you’re selected to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of several thousand people, shouldn’t you take a few minutes to make sure you know the lyrics? If you have even the slightest doubt that you can remember them all, print them out and take them with you! I, for one, would be impressed that you took the extra step to make sure you didn’t make a mistake.

My second complaint is that the same young lady decided to improve on the tune. Granted, the music isn’t the easiest to sing or the most beautiful melody I’ve ever heard. But is that any excuse for treating it the way so many drivers do speed limits, as if it’s a suggestion you’re free to ignore?

Frankly, I’m sick and tired of all the over-promoted pop stars who think singing our national anthem is more about them than the song or what it represents. We witnessed a classic example of this earlier this year, when Christina Aguilera botched the lyrics at the start of the Super Bowl.

That was bad, but not nearly as bad as Roseanne Barr’s legendary performance at a San Diego Padres baseball game several years ago. Time magazine dubbed that one “quite possibly the worst rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ ever.” And to make sure you got the point, they repeated the word “ever” and put it in italics.

By the way, that article in Time was actually called the “Top 10 Worst National-Anthem Renditions.”

Barr occupied the top spot. Christina Aguilera was at No. 9. And to my surprise, Hillary Clinton was No. 10.

While Clinton was never invited to sing the anthem at a ballgame (or anywhere else, as far as I know), apparently our Secretary of State was caught on tape singing along during a presidential campaign stop. Time described her efforts as “earnest” and suggested, “Just mouth the words next time, Madame Secretary.”

Now, that’s just downright mean. The lady never volunteered to sing in public.  And at least she was honoring our national anthem, unlike many politicos (and ballplayers, for that matter) who continue yakking with their neighbors while some of us are trying to honor our country.

And isn’t that what “The Star-Spangled Banner” is all about? It’s not great poetry or even beautiful music. It’s important because it represents our country and our flag. It’s a musical tribute to the price so many Americans have paid to secure and defend our freedom.

As one commentator put it,

[“The Star-Spangled Banner”] is a song about the courage and devotion shown by a group of Americans who in the course of a raging British naval bombardment refused to let the Stars and Stripes fall, no matter the cost to life and limb. And it became a song about the kind of nation we have been and still are, through war and peace, boom and bust.

It is about the never-say-die, never-give-in, never yield attitude that has been the hallmark of our national character and our military’s steadfast defense of freedom from Valley Forge to Fort McHenry to St. Lo to Inchon to Baghdad and Kandahar.

It’s about firemen and policemen running into the World Trade Center on 9/11.  It’s about that flag flying proudly and defiantly over the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Yes, it’s all of that… and more. So I’m delighted to report that at the next day’s game, the handsome young man who was chosen to sign the national anthem did a wonderful job. No fancy flourishes, no singing around, above or under the melody. Just a straightforward rendition, hitting every note and singing every word. It was an example I wish more musical superstars would follow.

Before I sign off, let me say a few words about the games themselves. The Braves went down to defeat on Wednesday, even though Chipper Jones obliged my wife’s request to “hit a home run for Chip’s birthday.” (She swears he heard her.)

The next day, a rookie pitcher named Brandon Beachy was on the mound for the Braves. He was cheered on by 20 or so family members who had traveled from all across the country to the game. I know, because they had four seats directly behind me. And every couple of innings, they swapped seats with other family members who weren’t so fortunate.

My pleasure was enhanced by their joy, as their young relative did a stellar job and earned the victory. He was aided in large part by my grandson’s No. 1 hero on the team, Brian McCann, who hit two home runs.

This is how baseball is meant to be: in a beautiful ballpark on a sunny summer afternoon. It was such a beautiful day that even the Cubs fans didn’t seem to be upset about their loss.

So thank you, Janie, for a wonderful birthday present. By the way, did I ever mention that visiting the Taj Mahal is also on my bucket list?

Until next time, keep some powder dry.

LOL, you at you morons still going to football games, etc. Engage in politics the way you engage in football. Be real men.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Sam I am,
I only go to highschool football games. Those kids play their life out for free and play harder than any pro ever did!!! I show them the respect they deserve!!

      • Song

Yes they do Joe H. There is something refreshing, patriotic and uplifting about high school games. Maybe it is the genuine enthusiasm, spirit and healthy competition. Maybe it is also the chill in the fresh air. Maybe it is because these kids are playing for the sport of it without the corruption of fame and money. Idk, but all of my kids are involved in high school extra-curricular activities, whether it is in the band, the game or as a dancer during half-time and I love every minute of it!

  • DaveH

How can we worry about how a song is sung when there’s blatantly anti-freedom stuff like this going on right in front of our faces?

What I don’t understand, is why don’t non union members form anti-union unions? They pass card check? Then get together and form a union with police or gun owners. Any manager wants to intimidate you for your vote, you remind him to back off or else. Real men formed unions back in the 1920s and were actually machine gunned and bombed by the big boss men (just research the term “red neck” to find out that “red necks” were actually the highest class of heroes and not banjo playing stupid perverts living in the south). There heroic actions brought us reasonable working conditions, the 40 hour work week, an end to practical child slavery, etc.

So you non union pussies getting intimidated can either man up or eventually starv to death aftr you are jobless and food stamps don’t work aftr our economy collapses.

Hopefully, my post pisses someone off enough for them to realize as the terminator said in Terminator 3: rise of the machines that “anger is more useful than despair”.

      • DaveH

Thank you Sam for demonstrating Union logic to the readers.

      • Sam I am

Let me guess… So if card check is enacted, you will just go along with it and get unionized? My beleif is that unions are like lawsuits and like government in general. They are all only to be used extremely sparingly in the most limited of circumstances. People should only sue to correct Erin Brockavich type injustices where thousands of children are getting cancer. People who pick up lawn mowers and chop their legs off then try to sue to get some dough should be thrown in jail for assulting themselves. That stupid Macdonalds women who spilled coffee on herself and sued Macdonalds should be guilty of breaking a law. Big government should only be used if our entire conutry is invaded or something like that. Unions should only be used to correct major injustices after big biz gets in bed with big government and eliminates all other competition, thus ensuring the economy is not free market. Republicans out there can’t honestly say our economy is free market… It isn’t when big business can just lobby congress for exemptions of laws…

      • DaveH

Card Check has been enacted, by the NLRB. It was mentioned in the article I linked to. Here’s more:

According to this article the event was greatly exaggerated:

I was in a non-union construction company and I proudly went through the union picket line. I had a job. As long as I am being paid a fair wage in a safe environment, I will work anywhere anytime. There is no reason to picket a jobsite as long as those two requirements are followed.

      • Vagabond

sam I am 75 years old and never belonged to a union in my life. I worked all of my life and while I didn’t make as much money as union workers made I made a good living and didn’t have a bunch of FATASSED union cheifs giving my money to the likes of obama without my consent. for the most part I was a trucker and I was satisfied with what I made. I worked for one company that paid a hell of a lot more than union drivers made,

      • Sam I am

Good for you. You guys think I am pro union. I am vehemnetly against unions of today but support “real” unions in the 1920s and 1930s that were used to correct major injustices. The tea party in a sense is a union. Unions can be used for good or ill like many things in life.

      • Song

good points Sam I am…your first post was a little confusing and sounded like you were pro-union. I agree that we have far surpassed the original intent of the unions in the 1920′s and 1930′s. The pendulum has swung too far in the other direction and I think a lot of posters here would agree that unions are not what they were in the 20′s and 30′s.

      • DaveH

There was never an excuse for the coercive force of Unions. They always have been about suppressing the good workers and taking advantage of their employers. If there were indeed sweatshops, what kept those workers from starting their own companies, especially back when the Government wasn’t regulating the life out of entrepreneurs?

The problem is that most of us have been heavily propagandized in the public schools and by the MSM. That’s what this site is for (thank you, Bob Livingston), and others like:

      • Old Henry

Also Vagabond you did not have a FATASSED union thug telling you when to go on strike and collect a pittance in strike pay while the FATASS collected his full pay.

And if you average out what they made during work and non-work strikes I wonder if they actually came out ahead.

    • eddie47d

Your way off subject Dave. The National Right to Work organization is an oxymoron and always has been. They don’t care one iota about any worker and only push for the right to work for less. I’ll take almost any union over their shameless slave labor tactics.

Dave, A super post saddly the Hurrah for the flag waving quasi Patriots is believed to be their stand for unity in something that does not exist and has not existed since 1861. So the question is what unity is it that they stand for?

As I know from your post you know just as I do we don’t follow the Constitution nor the Bill of Rights and haven’t since 1861.
But as most people would rather just get along, to get along we now face the Opressive Global Banking Cartels who abuse the Citizens of this country with their Power, afterall their business is Human Farming for profit and we have aided them quite well.

    • Nadzieja Batki

This is one more symptom of a disease that is hurting this country.

    • Stan Smith

Oh yea! I know Big ed will deny that his Union thugs try to commit murder and making excuses for the unions as usual! Just like all Libs making excuses for Mafia controlled unions! Better pack some serious heat for self defense if a union thug try to kill you!

This beoutch can’t sing PERIOD. Anyone who hires her after repeated flubs should to be fired as well. She doesn’t compliment our country please don’t use her anymore. This is not the first time she made a joke of herself. She’s probably drug out and didn’t have the class to not to make the same mistake twice. She’s getting fat so she has to make up the difference by embelishing and poorly at that, so her feable attempt to sing our National Anthem poorly NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE!! NO MORE AGULAIRA! When she F’d it up then all the patrons at the game should have stood up and drown the wentch out! When are we going to get our pride and patriotism back? We shouldn’t except trash, bad enough it’s in the White House but her attempting to, what was that? Singing?? Or dying road kill. NO MORE Agularia belching and calling it singing. Please.

  • Thinking About

Yes one should sing the national with tears of pride of our nation and this pride should follow every move we make each and every day. The disrespect shown by the citizens of USA for each other is the same disrespect shown in making a mockery of our national anthem. I also wonder why we are allowing this to continue to happen. A kinder gentler nation as Bush Sr ask for would perhaps bring civility and we could stand proudly for our great nation.

  • True American Patriot

At the top of the Top 10 Best National-Anthem Renditions is Whitney Houston with her breathtaking performance at the Superbowl that’s sure to put a few tears down the cheek of many patriots.

      Now that was really good.

    • libertytrain

She sure was one of the best – what a voice, what a pity her world fell apart – a sad waste of incredible talent.

      • http://deleted Claire

libertytrain–I agree-Whitney was very good. I also like Sarah Brightman–”Music of the Night.”
Now we have Christina, Lady Gaga, Rhianna, and others like them. Times have sure changed. Talk about pop music–I do like Katy Perry’s song –”Firework.”
The old R&B from the late 50s, early 60s was great. Bo Diddley, B.B. King, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, LaVerne Baker, I could go on and on. I really like the “old” music.

      • Song

There is hope…my own children, all teenagers refer to Lady GaGa as lady gag gag and so do all of their friends. It makes me wonder who Hollywood is trying to pander too. It sure isn’t a lot of the young people that I know. Maybe the youth will prove to be a stronger generation because of all the crap that is being dished out there way. Just a point of interest: there is a new movement to be “clean” and “straight edge” meaning no drugs, alcohol and smoking as well as no tattoos and piercings. It also means to dress nice. More young men, for example are wanting to wear slacks and ties and more young women are wanting occasions where they can dress up and be feminine. You certainly wouldn’t know that from the MSM or the crap coming out of Hollywood, but on local levels, things are really beginning to change. I am hopeful for our youth.

      • Jana

        Song,
Yes, and all of these youn women getting these little tattoos that they think are so cute. I hear the kids call them Tramp Stamps.

  • Incredulous1

The National Anthem is about US; all Americans – past and present. It is NOT a platform to exhibit individualism. In fact, it is exactly the opposite. It was written one way and it should be performed one way – to the best of the performer’s abilities. The more the song is vandalized by singers unwilling, unable or incapable of performing it correctly, the more young Americans will think, “That’s the way it’s suppose to be sung.” We do NOT need to contribute to the dumbing down of America.

  • http://n/a John Beach

It has gotten so bad (the singing of the National Anthem) that they really ought to return to the best recording they can find of it and not go through the charade of some “show-off” getting up there and making a fool of him/her self and an unforgettable disgrace of the Anthem. Never one of my favorite pieces of music, its lyrics are truly representative of our history and faith. I have always preferred “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” for both music and words and suppose that, the fact that the tune is the same as that of “God Save The King” or “Queen,” is probably the reason that it was not adopted as our National Anthem. Both patriotic songs remind us of our love/hate relationship with the United Kingdom.

  • Morton L. Friedman

The DJ where we go dancing always plays the Star Spangled Banner. The best rendition, EVER, is Kate Smith. Nobody even compares, it matters not how much modern electronic enhancement is applied. She projected her love for this country with both her singing power and proficiency.

    • Pete0097

Like i said in a later post, opera singers know their range and where to start the song so they can hit all the notes. That is why the Phila Flyers used her for their games.

    • Vagabond

Morton I never heard her sing the national anthem but her rendition of America the beautiful is the greatest ever, and I am sure she was the same with the anthem,

      • JLC

      Morton:

      Absolutely!

    • Bob Waters

Morton, I was thinking about Kate Smith, who was a very popular singer in her time. She always sang patriotic songs, and I loved “God Bless America”. I certainly agree that all real Americans respect the patriotic songs, especially at public events and sung without embellishment. Thanks.

  • Penny R. Freeman

Thanks for the commentary Chip. That’s exactly my opinion. My son is a Nascar fan which I am not, but since he watches the races every week I get to hear the ridiculous attempts by various singers to sing our anthem. Needless to say most of them are awful. Granted it’s not the easiest tune to sing, but adding in country yodeling style singing doesn’t help. Neither does drawing out the notes or changing the emphasis on various words to make a better impression on the listeners of that person’s singing skills. But at least that organization does keep the anthem as a part of the opening to each race. Maybe once we get Obuma out the door we can take down the lefties, get our national pride back, and show the world who we really are again. It’s long past time to stop allowing liberal judges and atheists to intimidate us into giving up our traditions-the pledge of allegiance, the national anthem, and prayer. I live in Mississippi. Can you believe that there’s a group of morons down here who came from Wisconsin just to intimidate the county school system into deleting prayer before high school football games? Needless to say that isn’t going over well here. Mississippi was ranked in some rating as the most religious and conservative state in the union. How they came to that conclusion I don’t know. And it may have been some idiot judge’s ruling that if the event is a part of a government associated event prayer shouldn’t be a part of that event, but we should be fighting that just like this county is fighting this Wisconsin group. Would someone like to show me where it states in the Constitution that there is to be a separation of church and state? That isn’t the wording nor the meaning in the Constitution. The first amendment is: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for the redress of grievances. Exactly where does that imply a separation of church and state? The liberal idiot judges who sided with the atheist morons need to learn this country’s history and actually read the Constitution.

Have any of your ever felt the RAW POWER of Jimmy Hendrix’s take on the Star Spangled banner? Its power is so strong that with not a single word sung it brings to life the very moments this song was penned so you can feel it, as well see it, its almost as if your standing there on the ship watching it all unfold.

Keep in mind Jimmy was 101 AB before he became the most incredible guitar player the world has ever known and perhaps will ever know.

    • rich hutchins

agreed about Hendrix- i love his version.

    • crystal

My father hated the way Hendrix played the National Anthem.

      • Bruce

Crystal, I am very sad to hear that.
{My father was an ignorant Racist as well a total Bigot Pig.} So I could care less what he had to say.

You should learn to be your own person, always question with Boldness anything you hear and or are told, or see, {there is no subsitute for first hand knowledge.} Listen to Jimmy Hendrix on your own then tell me what you feel, what you sence, if you can feel the Beauty in the seven simple root notes. So in plain words Crystal, please think for yourself.

      • http://deleted Claire

Ditto on Hendrix. He sure could make a guitar talk.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Claire,
Hendrix only had one problem. He was about 10 years ahead of his time. Had he come out about 10 to 15 years later, he would have been VERY successful in his living years, not after death. I was very happy to see him inducted into the hall of fame, though!

How ironic that a poem titled “Defence of Fort McHenry” written by an American lawyer during the War of 1812 against the British was put to the music of an English club song and became our National Anthem. Great poem, terrible choice of music = very difficult to sing.

    • Keno

      Chris,
I’ve always thought the bigger irony was “My Country ’tis of Thee.” I remember the shock I felt as a kid when I first heard “God Save the Queen.”

But I guess there’s precedent…I know a number of tunes for our great Christian hymns were originally English or Welsh drinking songs.

      • Chris

Keno….right on. Maybe our motto should be “in Bass Ale We Trust”

      • Bruce

Keno, This is not an insult in any way – BUT – the song is based on Muzio Clementi’s Symphony #3.

      • eddie47d

There are several songs in Church that I sing loud and boisterous and sing with joy. Then there are those that have no flow to them and the words don’t seem to match the notes.Several religious songs had different authors and composers. It was the same with Francis Scott Key who did write religious songs. No one knows what tune he had in his head when writing the National Anthem so this song could have sounded very different if that was known. I agree this song should be sung with respect and I hope they didn’t pay Roseanne Barr for doing it and was surprised they even picked her.Millions of us have sung our National Anthem yet how would we do if asked to sing it solo?

      • crystal

Do you like Kirk Franklin? I like his “When You Fall” and “Without You.” They are his Christian ballads. I think they are beautiful.

      • James A.

Count me as one who would like to trash the Star Spangled Banner in favor of America The Beautiful. It would be much easier to sing and the words are so much more meaningful. The Star Spangled Banner is about one incident where we held on to a fort in a war with the British.

      • Kate8

James – It was a bit more than that.

Men and women were holding up the flag so that the men held on the ship would know that, as long as the flag flew, America had not fallen. They could see it in the light of the bomb bursts.

Those holding the flag up were being gunned down, and when one group fell, the next piled on the dead bodies to make sure the flag stayed up. It was that important to them. Many died that night.

The song represents the courageous and indomitable American spirit.
It represents our freedom, held even unto our last breath.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Kate8,
        Very well said, BRAVO!!

      • Old Henry

        Yes Kate, I second JoeH!

      • Randy G

Just remember, they were ‘drinking songs’

  • Bill Matteson

the National Anthem should be respected ,it is a symbol ,like our flag
The symbol of freedom and like our flag it should be respected
It should be sung as it was written without any stylization “do woops, skat or screechs
I am all for charging any singer that does this treason.
my feeling is when a pop star does that they are showing contempt for America

    • ValDM

You forgot one……….where the singer “yodels” an extra 5 notes instead of the one note that’s supposed to be sung.

In song concert Sunday and anthem singer at ball games for decades sang it. People talking to each other. Few at attention.

It is even worse at ball games here. I lay it on door steps of our schools. We were taught how to behave all through school.

    • http://aol Tarco

I remember in school we were taught how to sing every word in tune. The word “banner”had three beats in descending order which we practiced to perfection. We always stood in attention. Nonsense was not tolerated. It was as sacred as the Pledge of Allegiance. Why is it that every country in the world would not disrespect their country the way people do in this country? Could it be they really aren’t Americans? By their deeds they will be judged.

      • crystal

When I was a little girl they didn’t teach us the song, so I look back and laugh at some of the words I said wrong. I didn’t learn the words correctly until about the 4th grade.

  • Jim Laubscher

That’s why people that sing wonderfully are selling so many albums, I.E. Celtic Thunder, Celtic Woman, Paul Pott, etc. etc. etc.
The people of America and the world are desperately searching for something with a foundation. Jesus would be a good start.

    • crystal

I love Celtic Thunder. People laugh at me (I’m Black) and don’t get why I love them so much. I have them on my iPod. Their voices are wonderful.

    • Old Henry

  • Art deKnoll

She did the same thing at Super Bowl. Why is she still on the National Anthem gig? Fire who hired her. It must be some kind of personal vendetta against USA. It is not accidental or stupidity, its on purpose.

  • Keno

Amen Chip, I am so sick of these over-hyped and under-talented morons who think that an opportunity to perform the National Anthem is all about them. Thank goodness Francis Scott Key never anticipated such renditions, he probably would have wadded up his notes and thrown them into Chesapeake Bay.

(A larger issue is this generation of vocalists who think that being able to scream more-or-less on pitch conveys passion, but that’s a whole other story.)

BTW, the Taj Mahal is well worth the effort it takes to get there, hope you can someday cross it off your list.

  • http://aol.com sean murrey ILLInio

All of these pop stars are liberals they dont know the words of our national anthem.

    • crystal

They barely know the words to the songs that are written for them.

      • Randy G

And they can’t sing either. They couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.

  • NancyJ

I don’t know about the majority of people; however, I kind of resent turning it into a “pop event”. I wish they would sing it as the person who wrote it intended.

Of course, you would have to have some real talent for that.

    • NancyJ

AND PLEASE, PLEASE FOR GET ALL THE STUPID GRACE NOTES.

      • http://Moreexpensive,moreunknowproblems. Lewis Munn

Just think of them as Disgrace notes, and then consider the singer who has to find the notes before singing them!

    • jbird

      Nancy,
The person who wrote it wrote it as a poem. Music was put to it much later.

      • rich hutchins

and the music is from an old German beer hall song.

THE TUNE WAS “TO ANACHREON IN HEAVEN” 1766. IT WAS THE ANTHEM ON THE ANACHRONITIC SOCIETY OF LONDON, ESSENTIALLY A DRINKING CLUB OF YOUNG MEN. EMPEROR FRANKLIN I HAD THE TUNE CHANGED SO IT WOULD SOUND ‘FULLER’ WHEN PLAYED BY THE MARINE BAND IN 1931. IT WAAS MADE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IN 1935 OR THEREABOUTS. IF YOU WOULD SING THE ORIGINAL TUNE IT’S A HELL OF A LOT EASIER TO NAVIGATE THROUGH. PROVING ONCE MORE THAT LIBERALS HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING RIGHT.

        TO ANACHREON IN HEAVEN

  • http://Yahoo meh-GID-oh

NO…I can’t agree. ALL should sing it. Little kids and the whole stadium. IF it’s a solo, it would be nice to have a voice that carries the song BUT never bastardize the way it was written with a vain attempt at improving it. A good military band and the whole stadium joining in would be as great way of doing OUR National Anthem. Same in Church…sing people, sing and Praise the Lord!

    • steve in AZ

Right on, MEH and right on, Bob!!

We should all sing the national anthem because we desire to sing it. Whether we can carry a tune in a bucket or not. Whether we know all the words or not. Why don’t you know the words? Learn ‘em. Live ‘em. LOVE ‘em!!

And all you people that wish to exhibit your “craft” by warbling around in a quest for your personal “variation on a theme” put a sock in it. Sing the notes and words as written. And while you’re at it, get a clue and

DONATE NOW so you can VOTE RON PAUL 2012!!!!!!!!!

It should be about the song and patriotism for America and not some idiot trying to make a name for themselves. Most of the Hollywood flukes are a bunch of overpaid nutcases!!

It may be hard to sing, but I think it is the moost beautiful thing I have ever heard It is America and it is about our flag. I was on the beaches for 5 invasions during WWII AND WHEN DAYLIGHT CAME AND OLD GLORY WAS FLYING IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL thing I have ever seen. And what about these jerks that won’t even stand for it ?

      • Jyrine

How about a so-called president who refuses to salute or address Old Glory in any way.

      • OB1

Eddie, are you trying to censure us? Are you judging Jyrene? Why are you doing that, if of course you admit you are. Nobody I now hates Obama. They HATE his policies. They HATE his choice of now resigned cabinet members. Hating the things a person does has nothing to do with judging and hating Obama, He’s just a man. Talked to your local community leaders or business owners lately? How about your local business owners? How about those who have been laid off or forced to take early retirement? How about those on furlough from the city and county you live in? My state is bankrupt as is the Feds! This is no longer about Repub or Dems, it’s about US. No one here is going to defend Dick Cheney or any other Cra&& you always bring up. They are ALL compromised. Now, dear Eddie, what in the he** are you willing to do about it? For example, learn something new….what a novel idea! Now, I shall ignore you as you have become irrelevant.

Don’t waste your time on eddie OB1, when it comes to his beloved obama, all common-sense goes out the window! The poor boy is in love…

Eddie47d, I am a caucasion but I know many nationalities who voted for Obama. They don’t have jobs and haven’t been able to lift themselves out of the slavery that liberal progressives have kept them in. They are turning against Obama and regret they ever voted for him.

Nobody’s desire to stay in a hole in the ground, for everyone wants to live the American dream. They thought Obama’s promised ‘lies’ would bring them out of that hole. The Obama administration hasn’t done anything for the poor except keep them as slaves by relying on the federal government for their survival.

Damn if Obama does and damn if he doesn’t? HE HASN’T DONE ANYTHING GOOD. If you think he’s done anything good except put this country into excess debt, please comment with one example.

Edward I agree with you. allthough I only servedin Korea and was on occupation forces in Germany and served during Vietnam I still think the National anthem is the most beautiful song and it pisses me off to hear some one mangle it. the best one I have heard sing it yet was George Jones at a race. NASCR has someone sing tha anthem or play it befor each race and most of them do a fair job but still some mess it up, another thing that really ticks me off is to see some clown standing like he could care less no hand over their heart and in some cases talking to the person next to them,

I did chew the heck out of our High School principal for the way the kids in the stands at the football game have a habit of grab-azzing and carrying on during the national anthem, thus ruining it for us vets that stand at attention with our hats over our hearts or now saluting! He said he would see what he could do. BULL! TEACH THEM SOME RESPECT!!! That’s what detention used to be for! When I was in school, it didn’t matter if it was after school hours, if it was on school grounds and you were a student of the school then you were directed to report to detention and my old man would wear my hind-end out with a belt!!

      • Old Henry

Well put JoeH and good for you. Yeah, I remember those days as well. My old man didn’t use a belt, but I knew he would use his, ah, hand if it came to that. That “knowledge” kept me on my side of the line.

There was no DCFS involvement and if the police got involved they would usually just tell the kid not to do it again, shake the old man’s hand and leave…

I’ve traveled to 20 countries, and been to the beaches at Normandy and to the American Cemetery there and burst into tears upon seeing the Stars and Stripes flying over all those white crosses! I cry every time the National Anthem is sung, because it moves me to the core of my soul, that our country was founded on something bigger than ourselves and many, many other brave men and women have died to give me the rights I enjoy today! Whether the song is difficult to sing or not, it is OUR National Anthem and should be sung as best possible, giving it all the due respect it deserves!

      • DaveH

Do you think Rick Perry can walk past a mirror without stopping to admire himself?

      • Hope For American

No, he can’t, DaveH. He reminds me of a case I’ve been fighting for two years, i.e., the facade of a woman who married my exhusband, who owed me a lot of money. He passed away and the judge finally decided she did not have a right to my money and now she and her corrupt attorney are accusing the court of violating her ‘Constitutional’ rights. Where are my rights when she’s probably not even a legal American? I’m sick and tired of Mexicans crossing over our borders and when or if they can’t get their way, they scream ‘Constitution Rights’. Illegals do not have any American rights.

People like her have such a faux ‘Christian’ facade, but yet their hearts are filled with darkness. That’s what I think of Rich Perry. His looks are not the person he is, and if anyone votes for that man, God Help America.

Rick Perry came out of the woodwork from nowhere. That’s because he was already chosen by ‘The Establishment’ to be the next president. American’s do not elect their presidents – they are selected. American’s have to show some balls and say ‘We’ve had enough of those crooks tyrannical and despotic abuse.’

      • Old Henry

No I don’t DaveH. If he gets the “nod” it will be one megalomaniac running against another. A battle of egos!

Thank you for your service. My uncle swam in the ocean off Koras’ after his plane was shot down during the Korean War. Really, a miracle that he was even rescued eventually. Staying afloat in the ocean after being shot down is an act of courage and perseverance in and of itself.
Truly, a testament to faith. Also my other uncle died in the sinking of the Indianapolis after the War with Japan was already declared as over. Mostly, they all died except the captain, who later killed himself. Sad, sad story. I know that my uncle dove overboard with a gun in his hands that were on fire as well as the rest of him. Most of them were eaten by sharks. I’ve never been much of a complainer because of my families’ stories. I’ve even researched them. Only Vets seem to understand what liberty and freedom is. It’s because for almost a generation now, we’ve had it. This is for you with all the words! And thank you, from me.

Can we all agree that only someone who can actually SING should be allowed to sing The National Anthem in public? The song requires singing skills. Garnering east votes has nothing to do with it. I’ll take my chances. If someone is bad, I’ll put a death grip on the remote and change the channel. If I’m in the stands, I’ll leave or put my hands over my ears.
Just do America and the world a favor, and never let someone like Baaney Fwank or Queen Nancy Pelosi give it a try. In either case, it should be grounds for unleashing attack dogs – or worse.

    • Gary

May I SUGGEST that Pelosi would first have to pass a test on the National Anthem before she could sing it. In short, another troubling, partisan liberal with no economic solutions or singing ability.

This is what happens when someone gets to sing our National Anthem, but has no heart for it, our country, or an ounce of intelligence in their head. Christina may be a popular singer, but she is not patriot, just a ditzy woman. I love our national anthem, but it is always brutalized by the “stars” of our day. I still remember Roseanne Bar messing up our National Anthem and then doing some unwanted actions after trying to sing it, saying that it was just a joke. Remember, that it was also written to remind all Americans and people around the world where our alligiances lie.

“Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.”
    “In God is our trust.”

Both of which are in the 4th verse. I guess that the freaks in Hollywood, along with the lib, gay loving, baby killing, marxists just don’t understand what it means to be an American and our Christian founding. 하나님과 국가 대 한! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

I was shocked to learn that my generation was the last to even learn the National Anthem. Hardly anyone knows either the words or melody anymore.

Last year my grandson’s school had a talent contest, and he and some other kids were supposed to practice the anthem. His mom didn’t know it!! I had to teach it to them!!

When she was growing up, I just assumed it was taught in school, as it was day. I never imagined it wasn’t.

I just read where a school in one of the states has banned the Pledge, too.

The only conclusion one can come to, given all that’s going on these days, is that America, as we knew her, is no more.

      • KHM

        Hey Kate8,
I just read about the school that banned the national anthem at all their sporting events etc. It’s a small Mennonite college named Goshen in Indiana. At first they just played it instrumentally with no singing. Then the school banned the anthem altogether, sayin that it was “too violent”.
I think that they don’t know or understand the history of when this song was composed.
Good for you for teaching your grandchildren and your daughter the words to the anthem.
Progressives want to remove our history. Guess thy’re succeeding.
I agree with Mr. Wood that those who sing the anthem should not do their own arrangement, as it is not about them.

I don’t care who’s National Anthem you are invited to sing, any nation’s National Anthem is not a song for “entertainment;” it is to show one’s allegience to that country, to stand tall in respect and love of said country. As far as the “clowns” that attempt to show off their virtuosity in “singing” our nation’s National Anthem is to show all of us your ignorance of what the National Anthem is and your lack of respect and love for your country. If you can’t sing it straight with respect, do us all a favor and decline to sing the National Anthem.
