Hurricane Irene Grows In Strength, Could Hit Carolinas

The latest reports have detailed the growing strength of Hurricane Irene, as the tropical storm is currently on a path that would intersect with South and North Carolina, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Though the hurricane is only a Category 2 storm, the speed and ferocity are picking up in a way that experts have said may lead to Irene developing into a Category 4 hurricane once it passes Central Florida, reported the newspaper.
“We expect the storm to stay off the coast of Florida, which is good news for Florida,” Dennis Feltgen, spokesman for the National Hurricane Center, said. “But it’s still looking like its going to impact the Carolinas and could make landfall there as a major hurricane.”
If the forecasters are right, and the storm does grow to the Category 4 level, the prevailing winds could reach speeds of more than 131 mph before it comes ashore on the U.S. mainland, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has recommended that citizens in the soon-to-be affected areas should make sure that their car has a full tank of gas, their family is together at all times and that individuals follow the designated evacuation routes.
