JACKSON, Miss., Aug. 14 (UPI) — An apartment fire in Jackson, Miss., Saturday killed a mother and her four children despite neighbors’ and firefighters’ efforts to save them, authorities said.
The victims were Dominique Henderson, 28, and her children, ages 7, 5, 3 and 2, Jackson’s WAPT-TV reported.
Jackson Fire Chief Greg Travis said the fire started in the apartment’s kitchen but the cause of the 1 a.m. blaze had not been determined, WJTV-TV in Jackson reported.
Witnesses told WAPT-TV a firefighter went inside the apartment and came out with two children, who later died at the hospital.
Other residents had tried to get to the children but were turned back by the flames.
“It was a baby 2 years old up in there. I would have done anything in my power just to help them, that’s what I tried to do,” said neighbor Ijuan Wilson.
Others tried to boost a neighbor up to the window to reach the children.
One neighbor said it took firefighters “like 30 minutes” to get to the fire and get water flowing, but a fire department representative said crews arrived 5 minutes after getting the call and had no problems getting water.
