HOOPER, Utah, Aug. 13 (UPI) — A 12-year-old Boy Scout missing overnight in Utah’s Ashley National Forest was found alive Saturday, 2 1/2 hour after a massive search resumed, police said.
Jared Ropelato of Hooper, Utah, was reported missing by his Scoutmasters at noon Friday in the vicinity of Spirit Lake Trailhead and Daggett Lake, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
A search for Ropelato began at 1:30 p.m. Friday and was suspended at 9 p.m. The search resumed at 7 a.m. Saturday and word he had been found went out about 9:30 a.m.
Daggett County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Karen Peterson said the 12-year-old was found by searchers in the Long’s Park canal area, 4 to 5 miles south of where he had last been seen.
“He had done some hiking but was in good condition. He told us that when night fell Friday he made himself a lean-to and settled in for the night. One of our [sheriff's] EMTs checked him out and he’s fine,” Peterson said.
