Anonymous Planning ‘Operation Facebook’

In a video posted on July 16 that is just now gaining popularity on the Internet this week, the hacktivist group known as Anonymous announced it is planning “Operation Facebook,” an undefined hacking assault on the social network of the same name, on Nov. 5. The video can be viewed below.
“Attention citizens of the world, we are Anonymous. We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warning that follows. Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information, then join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy,” a voice, which has been digitally altered to obscure the speaker, says in the video.
Such videos are commonly used by the group for “AnonOps” (short for Anonymous Operations) to garner interest from within the Internet’s hacker community. The videos will name a target, and then individuals will respond on various message boards and IRC channels offering ways they can support the operation or expressing their vehement opposition to it.
“FYI – #OpFacebook is being organised [sic] by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of #Anonymous agrees with it,” read a tweet from GroupAnon, a Twitter feed that posts about Anonymous’ activities.
Anonymous has most recently been tied to another hacking group, LulzSec, in an alliance known as AntiSec. The activities of this combined group included alleged cyber-attacks on PayPal, and suspected attacks against the websites for Visa and MasterCard. In mid-July, 16 suspected Anonymous members were arrested in a nationwide Department of Justice crackdown as a result of the PayPal incursion.
