MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 11 (UPI) — Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was recovering from surgery to remove an infected cervical spine implant, officials said.
Doctors said they were unable to reconstruct the infected implant and the former president will be required to wear external support to compensate for its failure, Philippine Inquirer.net reported Thursday.
Arroyo’s doctors said they hoped to control the infection through “antibiotics, effective management and prayers.”
The surgery was conducted Wednesday at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Fort Bonifacio.
Arroyo’s husband stayed at the hospital the night following the surgery, said Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantes.
Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo was scheduled to attend a Senate inquiry Thursday into his alleged involvement in the sale of used helicopters he allegedly passed off as new to the Philippine National Police in 2009.
Arroyo didn’t attend the hearing, citing his wife’s “serious health condition” that could cause “sudden death,” the report said.
