Troops Remove Mine From Afghan Mosque

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces prevented an explosion inside a mosque in southern Afghanistan by removing a mine, the U.S. Defense Department said.

The combined forces were searching for a Taliban operative when the Afghan forces discovered an antipersonnel mine Tuesday inside a mosque in the Zharay district of Kandahar province, the department said.

The mine was sitting on a shelf where the operative had placed it.

The department said the combined force pulled away from the mosque out of respect, then worked with local leaders to find a way to keep the mine from exploding. The combined security force removed the mine and detained a number of suspects, the department said.

Also Tuesday, U.S.-led coalition forces killed a senior Taliban leader with an airstrike in the Dowlatabad district of Faryab province. The leader, Mullah Nasir, was a commission chief and second in charge for Taliban operations in Jowzjan province.
