Poll: Americans Agree With S&P

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Most Americans agree with S&P’s downgrade of U.S. government debt, and barely a quarter are confident the government can improve the economy, a poll indicates.
Just 26 percent of respondents in a Washington Post poll said they believe policymakers can right the national economic ship, a sharp drop from 47 percent in October 2010, the newspaper reported Wednesday.
Majorities in all parties and 70 percent of respondents overall said the U.S. government is focused on the wrong things, and 78 percent indicated unhappiness with the U.S. political system, a sentiment that dominated Standard and Poor’s decision to downgrade the country’s debt Friday from AAA to AA+.
Seventy-one percent of respondents said S&P’s analysis was accurate, while 52 percent said the downgrade was warranted.
Confidence in President Obama and Congress also plummeted from recent polls, though 77 percent of respondents still said the United States has the best system of government in the world, the Post said.
