SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Authorities in Texas say members of the Mexican Mafia prison gang have been arrested in Hondo on drug and firearm charges.
Nine members and associates of the group, considered the oldest and most powerful prison gang in the United States, were arrested Tuesday in a joint state and federal operation, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
The San Antonio-based gang, which originated in Texas prisons, has been the target of at least four federal prosecutions involving its operations in communities in the area, the newspaper said.
A federal indictment charges the suspects with conspiracy to interfere with commerce by threats and/or violence.
Three of the arrested men have also been charged with drug trafficking, and another gang member has been arrested on a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
