Marine Admits Scheme To Steal Generators

CHARLESTON, S.C., Aug. 10 (UPI) — A U.S. Marine sergeant pleaded guilty Wednesday for his role in the theft of more than 70 electrical generators while he was stationed in Iraq.
Gunnery Sgt. Eric Scott Hamilton, 40, of Pelzer, S.C., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to two counts of conspiracy to steal public property, the U.S. Justice Department said in a release.
He faces as much as five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced at a date yet to be determined. He has agreed to pay $124,944 in restitution to the federal government for the money he was paid as part of the conspiracy.
In 2008, Hamilton was in charge of a military storage yard at Camp Fallujah, Iraq, containing electrical generators and other equipment for use by Marine units. Hamilton admitted he plotted with a Marine officer to facilitate the theft of the generators by private Iraqi contractors, and also entered into a separate scheme with an Iraqi contractor for other electrical generators.
Prosecutors said the thefts continued when he was transferred to Camp Ramadi.
