California Girl, 9, Mauled By Pit Bull

SACRAMENTO, Aug. 10 (UPI) — A California girl is recovering after a savage mauling by a neighbor’s pit bull but may have suffered permanent nerve damage, doctors say.
Sabrina Carrasco, 9, of Sacramento, was attacked Saturday night, The Sacramento Bee reported. Animal control officers said the pit bull got out of the fenced yard where it was kept.
“It was really bad,” her mother, Ana Reyes, said weeping. “She just kept saying, ‘Mommy, I don’t want to die. Don’t let me die.’”
Gina Knepp, a spokeswoman for animal control, said the district attorney’s office will decide whether to prosecute the owner. The owner voluntarily surrendered the pit bull, which will be put down.
A cousin, Joandra Solis, said she was watching Sabrina and two younger children when the dog came running toward them. She picked up the younger children and told Sabrina to stay still, but the terrified little girl began to run.
Sabrina was being treated at the University of California Medical Center at Davis. She appeared to be doing well Tuesday, but her doctors say the nerves on her face may have been damaged.
