MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 9 (UPI) — Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cannot leave the Philippines without the government’s permission, the Bureau of Immigration said Tuesday.
Arroyo has been placed on an immigration watch list due to corruption cases pending against her, Inquirer.net reported from Manila.
The former president faces plunder charges alleging she illegally used hundreds of millions of dollars in government funds for her election campaign.
She also faces separate criminal complaints alleging she failed to remit $1.7 million in taxes on the sale of a government lot and diverted more than $13 million in an overseas workers’ fund to her 2004 election campaign, the Philippines’ GMA News reported.
Arroyo’s lawyer said earlier plans to place his client on the immigration watch list was a form of political harassment.
