Orange Goo An Alaskan Mystery

KIVALINA, Alaska, Aug. 7 (UPI) — A mysterious orange substance that washed up at Kivalina on Alaska’s northwest coast, has people scratching their heads trying to figure out what it is.
The material started showing up on Kivalina’s shore last Wednesday night, KTUU-TV reported.
Photos provided by City Administrator Janet Mitchell show the orange sheen on the surface of a lagoon with houses nearby, the Anchorage TV station said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said initial tests indicate the material is natural in origin.
“It is not man-made, it is not a petroleum substance,” Petty Officer David Mosley said, adding it might be an algae of some sort.
The results of further tests are being awaited.
