MIAMI, Aug. 3 (UPI) — Two women were killed when a salsa singer’s father drove his SUV into a Miami shop, police said Wednesday.
Celeste Gaitan, 33, owner of Celeste Boutique, and an unidentified woman in her 20s were killed in the accident shortly after noon Tuesday, The Miami Herald reported.
Rescue workers rushed Gaitan, who was six months pregnant, to Kendall Regional Hospital in a failed attempt to save her unborn child.
Driver Pedro Ruiz, father of singer Rey Ruiz, and his female passenger were not seriously hurt. He has not been charged.
Rey Ruiz said in a statement Tuesday night: “I know that at such a painful moment, words are not enough, but I want to express on behalf of my family, my parents and myself, from the bottom of our hearts, our deepest and sincere condolences to the families of these people.”
Pedro Ruiz was parking when he accidentally hit the accelerator, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
